This channel is about Silk Painting. For those, who always wanted to Paint Silk, but didn't know where to start.
Here you will find the answers to questions: - How to pull silk over the frame? - What kind of frames are for Silk Painting? - How to make a frame on your own? - How to mix colors? - How to draw a pattern? - How apply a resist (gutta)? - What types of Painting's Techniques exist?
My name is Ilona Stūre (that's why IS letters are in the name of the channel), I'm professional Artist. I've been Painting Silk over 30 years, so I'm experienced enough.
Thank you for all your tips and relies. I’ve watch the link on making colored resist 4 times , making detail notes as I want so much to do it properly. I like the fact with colored resist it won’t wash out. The three ingredients in the video, wax ,gasoline, and rubber glue that you put in the bottle- becomes the resist? OR that mixture must be added to a gasoline base gutta? Which is what I think. If so, using the bottle amount you poured into the bottle- how much more resist would you add to keep the color value as it appears. ? I know my questions must seem elementary to your experience self, but I am new at this. Your videos are the most informative I have found so I appreciate you very much. Susan McMillan God bless On Jun 15, 2024, at 1:07 AM, RU-vid
Hello Susan. Yes gasoline, wax and rubber glue - that's what gasoline based resist consists of. When all this stuff melted together - it's done. To make it colored you want to add a little amount of oil paint and blend well.
Hey lovely work! I am amazed and thank you for give so many useful tip. I want to ask what medium did you use this time around? Dye? I might have missed on that info
How do I prepare my silk fabric before I use Dino flow? Do I wash and cold water with a little fabric softener or Coldwater with vinegar? Help. I love your videos. Thank you very much for posting.
@@susanmcmillan1548 softener is good after steaming or ironing (in the end of process). I've read dye-na-flow instruction: they haven't mention vinegar.
Your watercolour technique is so realistic. I've been painting with antifuse technique. But the way you do allow to profit from the fusing effect of silk. Just lovely. Thank you so much❤
I follow your episodes and enjoy them greatly. But the glazing one confused me immensely oh how I wish I could just talk you through it to understand, but I will try riding my questions. Firstly, the motif that was on the Silk before you began painting was that how the silk came or did you do that? It was beautiful. Secondly the first layer that you did was that using Paint silk paint was on wet cloth. You mentioned, soaking it in water, cool water with a little soap and I took it to me and then stretched it wet and painted on the wet thirdly. The second layer of glaze was that the same type of pain or was that an alcohol ink. Also, I’d like to know when using the Gupta does that dissolve when you’re washing the silk or do people rub it off? Thank you for your response.
Thank you for your questions! - sometimes gutta stays stiff on the fabric and people usually wash it off, but my self made resist is mild and doesn't need to be washed off. The video how to make it is here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-03Bz2R4yu2M.html - I paint with the same paints the whole project, so in this case there were dyes - I answered to other your questions in your pervious post. Hopefully it was helpful
1:00 I have followed your RU-vid episodes and enjoyed them. But the glazing one confused me greatly. I wish I could just talk to you with you through it. Firstly, the motif that was on the silk before you started painting. Did the Silk come that way or did you apply that? It was beautiful, the first layer that you did was that acrylic paint or was that an alcohol ink when you said that you soaked it water with a little soap I got confused did you paint on the silk while it was all wet after you soaked it this was before the first step? Thirdly, the glazing layer that you did what was that medium and is the cloth still wet when you do that. I have a few questions about the group that also separately I see when people are applying the group but when do you remove the group do you rub it off or does it wash off when you’re soaking the scarf as you could tell I’m a real beginner.
Thank you! 1) the drawing of a peony was outlined with resist before painting 2) there were dyes 3) sometimes I wash silk in warm soapy water to get silk more "fluid", then dry it, then stretch on a frame 4) the second layer could be painted both on dry or wet silk 5) my resist is very soft, it doesn't need to be washed off, it stays forever. I hope my answers were helpful
This is so beautiful. Have you ever used any shimmering powder (e.g. Jacquard Pearl ex) in your silk painting? If so, could you advise any kind of binding solution so the shimmering power can be attached to the fabric in a long time? Thank you.
Thank you. I doubt if there are long term solution. All shimmering powders are glued on acrylic base (as I know) and it's not durable for long time if it's a wearable item. But as a painting it holds well.
Hi all, may I ask what is the advantage of silk painting vs digital printing on silk ( besides painting leisure/ hobby/ small production scale)? I mean, is silk painting better in term of visual quality? or it is just about spiritual feelings for the artist? or the rarity to the buyers/ or the admiration for craftmanship from the public?
Hi! Thanks a lot for the interesting question. Sure in silk painting there are a lot of advantages (you mentioned all of them). But being a silk painter (mostly) I'd never insist that silk painting is always good. It all depends... many many things should be taken into account: quality of silk, of pattern, of painting, of hemming; energy that you feel looking at painted silk and especially when you touch it. Is it eventually beautiful ? SO !!! Sometimes digital print is much more preferable.
@@issilkpainting Thank you for your reply. Yes, I think doing silk painting is more about achieving self satisfaction in pursuit of personal aesthetic first, profit comes later or doesn’t matter. We are now in such an era where craftsmanship is challenged by machines and AI. It will be very sad to see many traditional craftsmanship faded as time passes by. At the very least, it’s worth if we feel happy doing it ❤️
Hi.lovely video. Thank you. I'm in France . I've been using HDupont gutta and dyes. Very consistent and standard gutta when I work with new ones. But I've received from someone some old bottles and yes they have 2 phases one liquid and one very thick....so as a natural resin must change with the time and temperatures....so I throw them. ❤thanks again
Thank you for this, it’s fun to watch, Can I ask, what is the brand of the paint? And also what is the brand of the black gutta? And what type of silk is this? Thank you so much 🙏
Thank you too! It was Marabu ready made gutta, I use this one if I'm lazy to prepare my own resist :)) but I prefer my resist. The silk was crepe/crepe de chine. The paints were no flow acrylic paints, but I don't remember the brand name, may be decola? I'm not sure. I usually buy what's available at a local art supply store, don't look at brand but at color
Thank you for the very helpful video! With this translucent silk, could you add more layers of paint once the first layer has dried to make the colour brighter?
no no, satin is very good for painting, but the difference is washed or unwashed in this particular case. but usually silk meant for painting has no special treatment and paints flow well on it.
Really awesome… sP choice of design..loved it..paisley and silk are like soul sisters❤ ur style of playing wid resist n colours drives me crazy..I stand by the idea of no sure Color palate.. flowing brush is adorable❤.. happy to find u here❤
Can i melt wax separately ( stove or microwave) and then mix the ingredients. Can powder pigments be added for colour Do we need to leave the resist to evaporate?
1) I think it should work 2) only oil paint 3) no, only if it's too liquid. In time you'll feel which consistency is better for you. The consistency can be adjusted to the diameter of a nozzle, to the density of silk, to the wideness of the line you want to get. By the way here were some tips why gutta can be leaking: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Td0pMPeUQcY.html
@@issilkpainting does it leave a feel on the silk, some people say it feels rubbery? Also, do you know difference between powder, Acra dyes and paint dye
Thank you for your question. I needed to explain it in video. Actually glazing means second coat with less saturated dyes, but it may be also more saturated... depends on your goal.. sometimes you want to repaint everything totally, sometimes only slightly change shadow of the color
How long should I wait to iron silk after painting and washing after ironing(iron fixed pebeo setasilk). How to wash(water temperature and is detergent required) Also what gutta do u use
It's better to wait about 24 h before ironing, temp plus-minus 25 degree Celsius, sometimes I use detergent, sometimes not Here's resist's recipe I use: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-03Bz2R4yu2M.html
@@lateraladvents for example you pined one part of the silk on a frame, paint it, and then unpin silk, move along the frame with unpainted part and pin again... I'm not sure I explained well. It's better to show... You gave me an idea to shoot it.
@@issilkpainting you explained it very well. Would love a video too... My paints don't blend that well, maybe it's me, maybe it's the paints as I don't have dyes.
Hi... I drew my resist lines the same thickness as yours, with the pebeo water-based gold gutta.... The color is bleeding outside the border, and in some places the gutta is coming off. I am using pure silk, let the gutta dry, even iron fixed the gutta before painting. It helped some, but not much especially when using setasilk paint with water. Please let me know what I can do. The gold is a bit thicker in consistency and does not show on other side of fabric, can I dilute it with water? However it's happening with colourless gutta as well
I understand your disappointment... That's why I don't like ready water based resists (guttas). Sometimes they work fine, but rare. I've sent you link (in another post) to video where I make resist myself
@@issilkpainting hi, thanks for the response. I have seen the video, but the materials aren't readily available where I am, especially starting off. Does it happen with all water-based gutta( how does jacquard gutta base work). Can I use fabric liner( if I am going to anyway get a feel in the fabric) or wax?
@@lateraladvents you know, at my place only "marabu: is available, but tried also "gutta "itself and something else (don't remember the brand),. In the most cases yes, they leak, but sometimes the same brand, the same product - oh miracle!!!! - don't. You'll never know. The only thing - to reverse the frame upside down and and circle your design with gutta again. Usually it helps.
@@lateraladvents sometimes marabu holds paints well, not always... the thinner is silk the better result. My resist doesn't need any special treatment, doesn't wash out, no matter to iron or to stem it
Thank you for responding so quickly! Your videos and art work are wonderful and a deep dive into understanding this medium. I appreciate all the hard work you put into your content ❤
You've mentioned in quite a few of your videos to let the gutta dry completely. How long does this normally take? Is water based quicker drying than solvent based resists?
Hello! 1) Until it's not shining anymore when you look from angle and isn't sticky when you touch it. 2) I never compared. The speed of drying depends on humidity and temperature in the room, on the density of the silk, on the gutta or resist itself. Sometimes I paint at once after applying resist
Thank you too))) if you use paints for ironing 1) it's considered to wait for about 24 hours before ironing 2) yes I usually wash and iron again after first ironing
Breathtaking creativity! You have such an eye for the fluid movement ! I genuinely admire your skills ! Anyone would be wildly delighted to receive a scarf like this ! I would hang it as art ! 🤩🤩🤩😍😍😍
