I learned to fingerpick the guitar before I took up the banjo. The dexterity was already intact, but that high 5th string gave me fits. LOL Eventually I got the hang of it and it all came together.
If you know how to play boom-chuck-a rhythm on an acoustic and you want an analog to a guitar then play claw hammer. Let's be honest, outside of the 5-piece string band bluegrass banjo is obnoxious and nobody wants to listen to you practice. You can sit down in the living room and play frailing, upstroke, or two-finger styles without your wife wanting to kill you. You can hold it down at a jam too. The one thing clawhammer ain't going to accomplish is punching rolls over the cacophony of 4 other acoustic instruments into the next county, so your buddies don't wander all over a tune like wayward sheep.
Too bad all you’ve got is that old protocol droid back there. An R2 unit probably could have saved you a lot of time changing those strings and setting up mics. I’ve got an early Empire security droid, a K2 unit but he’s quite the klutz and always questions my ideas for mic placement.
The Fishman sounds as if it was recorded during a phonecall. EQ hardly improved it. Completely misses mids and lows. Very disappointing for that price. Thanks for the insight!
The difference is very noticeable to me. I preferred the Blue Chip as the separation from the string allowed the strings to ring out more fully. The muted effect I heard from the Tone Slab is not the tone I am looking for. Thanks to this video, I am convinced I should try a Blue Chip pick to compare to my current favorites. Setting the test parameters before the comparison proved helpful. Nicely done, thank you.
Yeah transducers never sound good no matter what price point IMO it’s mostly just the nature of that type of pickup, but with like a 70/30 humbucker to transducer ratio it adds the brightness and attack that the humbucker lacks
Great 'comparison' video! I own and use BOTH a Blue Chip AND a Tone Slab pick. I completely agree with your assessment of each as to Tone and note separation. I probably use the BC pick a little more because of which Guitar and Mandolin that I use for that Tonal Depth that I'm wanting. Thanks for your video!
