Both of your opponents were making you want to overextend because they were drawing you forward by matching steps as you stepped to them. The curse of being a tall fighter is the natural assumption that you can make up the distance with just a little more lean, which often gets us into trouble when it doesn't work. You may be interested in timing your advances with your opponent's step into range so that there's a moment where they can't retreat. Brett has a video where he talks about that interaction in detail.
@rryuan I have a hard time getting the range on that shot regardless if the circumstances. That's part of the reason I prefer longer gear, there's more wiggle room. I do throw it pretty often though just because it's a fun shot, satisfying to land, and if the opp is a little loosey goosey, opens up their board side shoulder.
I think people fight from an over extended position when they are intimidated by a fighter's B range. It could also be due to Murdock's fighting style drawing you into chasing him, has you conditioned into already being in that extended chasing stance.
Thank you for sharing what you saw, this is the first time I picked up sword and board and was wondering if you have any tips to improve with it as well as get my shots to move faster (granted this isn’t the best example tbh)
I would say the best advice for you right now is three things. First, try to move your board less until you get comfortable blocking. You did well with the punch keeping it extended, which blocks opponent's vision and keeps you more protected. It's common when you first start with SnB to move your shield too much, and keeping the board more static while starting will help you live longer in the long run as you learn what your board covers (strap helps do this naturally, but has other cons). Second, don't be afraid to step in. I notice often you are timid while fighting and you can learn to overcome this and gain confidence by simply just stepping in. This could create bad habits, but short term it will help you become more comfortable with the game. Third, do some pelling. Grab Tarbh or someone else and practice just throwing shots until it feels more natural and you can feel the snappy pop (transference of energy from feet to the sword tip). Have them show you how they generate their force so that you can emulate it. Once you're more comfortable with this, start applying it in your spars. Focus on good technique in those spars and you'll start to see more improvement. Overall, you did well. The most important thing though in the end is to have fun! It all comes in time and practice.
Oh man lol, the only caveat to this entire set I will give is we were fighting on the most slippery field (snow melt) I have ever fought on even with my boots. Our footwork was a bit limited here. Great review though! Around the world is also what I call that shot btw lol.
Thanks for the review and the kind words! The short sword was an Amtgard Short, but as you mentioned Torg was holding his sword lower and on the pommel so it might have made it look longer compared to mine.
Digging the smorgasbord of video samples in this one. The newbie tournament at geddon this year was great, super hype from the audience side especially
From one overweight depressed person to another I’d like to let you know you're not alone. I’ve had similar thoughts for years now. It sounds like you’re doing really well though. You’re getting out there, moving, you set reasonable goals and you achieved them all. No small feat. Of course there will be lots of stuff you have to work on and you are! That’s the great thing! It just takes time and a lot of relatively consistent work. While you can’t control depression thoughts, or at least I can’t, you’re not letting it stop you and you’re able to push through that and still go to the gym. That is certainly a positive sign in my book. Thank you for being this open on RU-vid.
Tanath loves to execute the “Charles” aka the deadfall ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-70OWYFiPRaI.htmlsi=f2BfKnojNbP7bNVk ). What helps me hit opponents that fight using a tactic like this is faking at the board shoulder (at a range that is threatening contact) and then throwing a sword side hip. Or one step further fake shoulder, fake hip, throw shoulder. Nice set y’all looked like fun. Other option would more commonly be follow through kiss the shoulder (on purpose) and dark side.
Hey! Thanks for the review! Quick clarification Mek (pronounced meek) is a unit specific title in Belegarth that is similar to apprentice or squire, my fighting name is just ‘Coat’. We are using the Belegarth rules for these fights. My sword is around 35 inches. I definitely agree that I got caught moving straight back instead of laterally. I need to work on being more mindful of that. Tanath was doing a good job of overloading my cpu definitely a contributing factor. Overall good review! Thanks again :) I’ll do my best to answer any further questions here
LOVED this review! I absolutely love how tactically you called it. Coat was a *nightmare* to close on, which I soon figured out. You were like "I'd like to see Tanath play more defensively" right when I was thinking "I should probably play more defensively"
I too need to work on my physical health, I've already lost a decent amount of weight but I aim to lose a lot more if I can. No specific weight loss goal, just want to keep losing it till it's gone, lol. I really need to work on strength training and endurance, which will be harder for me to do than the weight thing. My sword arm went noodily after only 30 minutes or so of fighting, which was pretty disheartening. Keep going, don't give up, set backs are okay! Enjoyed the video.
This is Devry. My takeaways from SKBC are 1) Weight loss and general fitness 2) improving mental game for adjustments 3) more/better feinting 4) double down on improving footwork 5) continue working to fight off centerline 6) drill to sharpen basics
Great recap! My sparring partner and I both collapsed on the ground by the end of the first pod haha. You aren't alone in your weight loss goals. Lets do it! Looking forward to seeing you next SKBC. Cheers!
Yo I really like this. In upcoming videos you make of these battles, you could should do some costume/outfit and weapon reviews of players. I use LARP for costume references and design. Looking forward to the other stuff you post!
I see alot of people not wearing their Personal Protective Equipment. Especially lacking in head gear. I must state ive never been in what im assuming is larp but still a well landed hit on the head is not good.
@@prophecy7777 Its an Amtgard event that takes place on May 22nd - 27th in Maryville MO. If you're able to make it out, I'd be totally down to record some tape with you!
Thanks for the insight and constructive feedback. Using your primary tool after getting positive feedback from it as a way to meaningfully set up shot variety is good advice. It can be hard to make the mental transition into consiously altering your game plan over the course of a match when your easiest shots are just muscle memory, so looks like we've got some work to do. Good stuff 👏
