Welcome to my channel first off! On here I will bring you along on my adventures and have some fun in the process. This channel was created to show more of what is involved behind each of my photos and also share a view into my life as a landscape photographer. My channel isn’t my portfolio, there’s good days and bad days and this is apart of the journey.

I have had a camera in my hand since I got my first camera at 4 years old, that is 30 years now and I have no plans on stopping this journey.

I’m sure you’ll kick yourself when I tell you but it is a cable release or shutter release cable, I just pick up the cheap ones off of eBay and buy them usually 3 per order just so I have a back up. This will work as well with most modern Fujifilm cameras like my X-T4. The reason why I used one in case you’re new to photography is to minimise movement to the camera as I take the photograph.

I forgot to mention this here but I ended up finding out what caused the lines in my images. Thankfully this was not down to anything I had done nor was it the film I used, I looked back over my older stuff once I found out the cause and all my images had the same effect. What happened was I put a post on my IG account and got people to comment, I also got some backlash from the company that done the job who phone and emailed me aggressively this was the owner Paul who contacted me, I tried to explain I was seeking answer from people and he thought I was attacking his business. I only tagged him in the photo a long with many others. I got contacted by another lab who was interested in having a look at my film negatives and I went along to them, they had a look and scanned my film to see no lines... I felt so good at this point and knew I was never going back to the old lab again. I found out their scanner is on its way out and they assumed it was a flat bed scanner due to the way the lines presented across the image which is called stair casing a technical term. Since then I have been using Silver Halide Studios here in Perth for all my developing and scanning. Later on after I found out what the problem was I mentioned it on my story only for others to come out of the shadows to say they also got blamed and treated badly after having issues with this film/print lab. It is a real shame that business get so big headed and defensive about what they do, I had many small problems with the quality standards over the years but I used them as they got the job done on time. This made me realise just another way how I wouldn't treat a customer if I ever had this problem, there's so many ways to resolve this without going straight to abuse and blaming the customer.

Oh so is Perth where I am living, I think if I was living over east it could be a different story for me. But I have wanted to move back to England for many years, Australia has never felt like home to me and I have lived here for over 20 years. It really is a strange feeling. I know so long as I have a good amount I'm earning I will be able to live a good life there, it is those who struggle financially who typically experience it tough. I am one of those people here where you look at your bank balance and wonder how you'll make it through the next week.

@@SimonPhillipsPhoto Don't think it's as simple as that in UK these days. Great deal has changed in 20yrs. Societal changes, national infrastrucures collapsing, laws & regulations of every kind being manipulated beyond imagination being twisted in very strange ways, making everyday living a growing decline of all manner. Don't think GB is anything like you left it, it isn't and the changes are almost daily! Just a heads up.

haha didnt expect to hear about the crappiness of living in Perth.., one of the reasons I left was because of the appalling customer service you have to endure every day.. 2 months to ship, no information, - a familiar story. I just ordered mine here in Singapore - 48 hours free guaranteed delivery. obvious reasons why there are differences of course. but I really dont miss these annoying aspects of Perth life.. trying renovating a house, total nightmare

Damn this is an old video haha. Oh yeah Perth is so isolated it makes for some interesting shipping times, it is often faster for me to get something from America or England than it is in Australia. I bet when you where renovating your house in Perth you wondered like me why everything would have to come from over east and take a few weeks to arrive, I really wonder why not have a warehouse with stock loaded here if you're a big store like Bunnings. That is such a great delivery turn around time! here I see that and I go plus a few days hahaha

The extra time that you allowed permits you to make a detailed checklist for your departure. Review everything and search for any inconvenience that can be avoided. Most people allow no extra time for reviewing things and are rushed, and that leads to slipups. After this, if you find that you still have extra time on your hands, then search for an ebook online on the subject of business startups. You could even draw a flowchart of your itinerary, complete with intersections for each decision. You can discover new options for your itinerary. If you flowchart your itinerary, you can now create a spreadsheet with costs associated with each decision that you may encounter. Doing these things shows patience and intelligence. It will build your confidence as you have considered most adversities within reason. Just wishing you the best. Cheers

Cheers Mike you're certainly not wrong about that as I have completely altered what was going to be coming with me on the plane, I remember before I was going to take a really big bag on and now I have a small camera bag. I have overcome some challenges I was going to face once I got over there as well. I am thinking about drawing up a flow chart once I get over there and settled into a house of my own. There's a lot I need to do but I have to be smart about this, I know my community idea comes first and then my RU-vid channel is a must, selling prints will be nice but there's other important areas I need to do before that. This area is something I have been thinking about a lot lately... of course my brain thinks it might not work but then the other side shows me what it could be if I work hard and steer people the right way plus look after people which is highly important.

Have a good time. I enjoyed the ride down with you. I remember in the 1990's when I drove from Perth to Margaret River, the drive was on a one-lane highway with frequent stops in small towns. Now you can really cruise there efficiently. While at Margaret River, I visited a winery/restaurant that served beef sautéed with wine. The winery was beautiful, with wide open fields growing yellow foliage (in November). The yellow and green plants growing in every direction were striking and very photographic. I remember choosing FUJIFILM (ISO 100) over Kodak film to better capture the colors. Beautiful place. Cheers

Hey Mike sorry for not replying sooner. It was really nice getting away with mum again and sad to think this will be my last time with her here doing these things, at least I will have those precious memories to recall on later down the line. I think I know the road you would have gone down on back then as well, it is nice stopping through small towns along the way as it breaks up the journey nicely but not so nice if you want to get there in a record time haha. I have only been to a few of the wineries for food down there, now along caves road there's over 100 wineries which is crazy and it makes it hard to choose which one to go to. Some of the fields now are starting to turn yellow, these are the canola fields they look pretty but smell nasty haha. Nice choice of film, I used to use that back in the early 2000's as it was a cheap but nice film to use.

For anyone thinking about buying Kase filters, first watch the Nick Page video, "A better magnetic filter system" . The quality issues are very obvious when filters start falling off. After spending over 1000€ on 2 sets of filters and only using for 2 months, Kase have shown no interest in helping to find a resolution after 10 months of trying. If you are happy to take the chance and end up wasting your money that is your choice, but if my experience saves you from that, so be it.
@SimonPhillipsPhoto
@SimonPhillipsPhoto Месяц назад
I must say after using these in the field I won't be going away from my main square holder system, in theory it sounds good but in the field not so good. I have had filters pop off, with the iron ore in our soil here in Australia when you drop a filter you have the task of removing those pieces otherwise it causes a light leak. When I want to add a filter quickly it works well, I wouldn't trust the holder system, I have a friend who was approached by one of the brands to use them and he denied the offer as he knows they are not that good in terms of staying on the lens. I am glad I didn't spend heaps on my kit. I will still hang onto it as a spare setup to my main.

I think that you're smart getting to an event a day early. When people try to arrive 'just in time' to an event, we fail to realize that everything must go to schedule - in life, things rarely go as planned. Tranquility has a small cost but gives a large and pleasurable payoff. Life is short, and tranquility sought for. Maybe since you're in a metropolitan area, you can do some street-photography in B&W. It's always a pleasure to see photos of people at markets in B&W photos. Cheers.

Hey Mike it really did pay off otherwise I most likely would have talked myself out of doing it on the day. I did get a bit of a hang over after having a few too many drinks on Saturday night haha not something I do very often. You're certainly not wrong about that at all. Actually after my stay there I done a bit of street photography on my way back to the train station, I didn't make a video as I didn't want it to get in my way of shooting but I will share a hand full of my faves in my community area. I think I can only share 4 photos in there. When I get to England I will be meeting up with friends and going to London for some photography which will be really good to do.
@Mike_in_Louisiana
@Mike_in_Louisiana Месяц назад
I'm glad that you had a good time - especially with all the headaches of moving lately. I'm still using a 5D mark iv. This makes it inconvenient for street photography. It has the loud mirror slap. With mirrorless, you can use the silent shutter and remain incognito. People aren't alerted of street photography - especially if you sit at an outdoor cafe and activate the camera with the phone app. About camera equipment, recently I took my Canon 24mm, 45mm, and 90mm TS lenses (all version 1) out and found them all fogged up with fungus. They're well over 20 years old and sat through three hurricanes where the house had no power (for weeks), and the humidity was very high. I'm pricing to have them cleaned. You know, TS lenses aren't a necessity with digital cameras, as much as with film cameras. I hate to just trash them. It appears that it will cost at least $200/each plus shipping. The one place that TS lenses help with digital is utilizing every pixel on the sensor. It helps you frame things correctly and avoid cropping, as well as perspective correction. If I pay to have them cleaned, the money will come from funds that I'm saving for a mirrorless camera. Decisions, decisions, decisions. Cheers.
@SimonPhillipsPhoto
@SimonPhillipsPhoto Месяц назад
@@Mike_in_Louisiana I am sure I will as well 🙂 With the 5D4 it does have a quiet mode which dampens the mirror box so it isn't as apparent that you have taken a photo, certainly not as quiet as a mirrorless camera thought but still a noticeable difference. With the lenses is the fungus still alive or is it dead? Also depending on how bad it is it might just be best to not clean them as it is a big job to get the elements effected cleaned and then the lens getting calibrated again. I would really like to get myself a TS lens some day, I have been eyeing up the 24mm as I will be able to use filters on it. It is really good as you can shift the focus plane so instead of adjusting the aperture you can do it with the lens shift, also good to shift the lens side to side for panos. I would personally say if you're saving up for a mirrorless camera that takes priority and the glass can come second since you have them already and just get them cleaned up gradually over time. You can still use them if they are not to bad, you wouldn't see the fungus unless you point it at a bright light source or see it in the bokeh.
@Mike_in_Louisiana
@Mike_in_Louisiana Месяц назад
I need to try the quiet mode on my 5Div because I'm getting tired of the mirror slap. You asked about the fungus/mold in my TS lenses. The 45mm TS f/2.8 has an internal surface completely covered with a whitish/blue fog. The 90mm f/2.8 has the same fog, starting from the outer edge, creeping towards the center with about 25% clear in the center. The 24mm TS f/3.5 has 25% fog around outer circumference with about 75% clear. I might take your advice and send just one lens for cleaning each year. I might send the 45mm off first. It's the worst and I can evaluate the work before sending others. All my TS lenses are version 1 from the late 90s, but in like-new condition. Both the 45mm and 90mm are sharp. I would say a rating between 'VG to Excellent' for a prime lens. The 24mm TS is not so good. For a prime lens, I would rate it Good+. Some consumer zooms are just as sharp with same mediocre contrast. The 24mm TS (version 1) has barrel distortion and some CA. In the field, I have to document the amount of shift for each shot. When I get home and the open file in PS, since the Shift Function pushed the sensor to another quadrant of the lens, image corrections cannot be applied immediately. I have to use PS's 'Extend Canvas' module to push the 'image capture ' back to its original pre-shift quadrant position. My notes of the amount of shift tells me how far to Extend Canvas for each photo. Now, with the complete PS canvas centered to the lens' (non-shifted view), I can apply Distorion, Vignetting, and CA Corrections to match the lens (symmetrically). After all corrections are completed, I remove the Extended Canvas portion and return to the shifted image capture. Don't buy a TS lens with distortion or CA. Once you use Shift Function, PS corrections are off-center unless you use Extend Canvas mode to recenter the canvas. It's a PITA to document every Shift Function magnitude, in the field, for each photo. But I have to do this because the 24mm TS (version 1) has significant barrel distortion, vignetting, and CA that requires corrections. I have to use Extend Canvas for that lens. The 45mm TS and 90mm TS aren't as bad so I usually don't document Shift and Extend Canvas in PS. So, if someone offered to sell you either a 45mm TS or 90mm TS (version 1) at an excellent price, you might want to jump on it. But the 24mm TS (version 1), with its problems and post-production headaches - I wouldn' recommend it even if cheap. Cheers
@SimonPhillipsPhoto
@SimonPhillipsPhoto Месяц назад
Hey Mike, Sounds like the 24mm isn't worth getting cleaned so long as you can stop the fungus from growing, just store the lens in a box with some silica gel packs. The other two would be worth getting sorted it might just be a couple of elements effected. Good to know the 24mm version 1 is one to stay clear of, I will look at the V2 now when the time comes. I might not use it much or keep it for very long but it would be good to get some time in with one, I think it would be quite handy that's for sure. A lot of my work though I tend to just use hyper focal distancing to achieve my focus for the scenes, but just for rare instances it would be handy for. Doing it in post isn't the same as with the lens, because in post your stretching pixels and not actually making improvements on the plane of focus like you would do with the lens. The 90mm would be great for product photography.

I’ve not had this problem before, perhaps there’s a fuse which has blown. I don’t think you need to replace the drying out unit. If you can’t get it working again even after talking with the manufacturer you could always use silica gel packs, pelican sells them in metal cases and when they are no longer effective you put them in the oven for 20 minutes for them to become good again.

Maybe you had a reason to sell fast, but if you want a fair price never sell to a dealer.. should always try selling private first, if you want it gone fast list it as cheapest among others in its condition, would still likely get thousands more than the dealer will offer. Dealers where you go if times running out and your cars not getting any interest even at lowest price in market. Even then, I'd offer it to a mate for what the dealer is offering me, if they got the spare time, its likely they'll make a few thousand selling it on, the worst case is they sell it to the dealer and get their cash back.

Yep I just needed it gone to be honest so I can focus on other things I need to tackle for my move, the site I used said it would fight for the best price around and it would compete with selling my car privately. When I agreed to their terms and conditions I also agreed that if I left I would have to pay an exit fee basically which wasn't cheap. I did think about selling it privately but lately even selling camping and camera gear this has proven to be a hassle for me. At least is is gone and I don't have to worry, it would have been nice to get more for it. I still have some things I didn't sell with it so that will go on eBay or the local classifieds :)

It really is! Now it is starting to feel more real. Now it’s gone I now want to go to some places which is typical 😅

What brand is your hydration bladder? It looks like it’s fitting perfectly. I’m looking for a 2 Liter hydration bladder but there are so many different types. Or just send me the dimensions of it, then I try to figure it out! Thanks in advance!

I can't say as it is now all packed up, it wasn't a cheap one from memory. a narrower one I would suggest buying to make it easier to fit in the bag.

@@SimonPhillipsPhoto thanks. I forgot, you’re moving back to England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿. That’s a big thing and lots to organize. Regarding the bladder: I will by some at AMA… and figure out which one fits the best!

@StephanKempchen haha that’s all good my friend. There’s so much to do, I’ve just sold my car late last week and most of my stuff is packed away now. What I’d recommend is one that is wide and shorter in length as you can fill this up better as it sits more flat, the narrower longer ones tend to end up like a tube. The pocket it sits In doesn’t come out much once you’ve got your camera gear inside the main compartment. Just thinking about mine it could have been about 15x30cm perhaps.
