@NEBLEEKS I'd say it's kind of two-fold. First, Hackman's role in this is much flashier than anything Murray's been given by Anderson. Life Aquatic is an eccentric, starring role, but that character is written with much more self loathing and introversion, meanwhile Royal gets to holler like all get out. Secondly, I'd argue that Murray's praise in the Anderson movies is well deserved, particularly Rushmore. I think it's just different acting styles, but both are exceptional.
@SpeedingStudent Holy shit, you really stuck a nerve with Pinin500. Anyways. Yes, Ferrari didn't fair as well as Porsche's 917 did. Heck, the 917 still proved competitive in the hands of privateers in the 80's. Ford couldn't keep up with the stricter engine rules like Porsche did. Turbos were things of fairy tales to Ford at the time. I like Ford, look at my Eleanor on my profile, but they can't match Porsche. Also, Ferrari focusing on F1 isn't quite as boring as Ford focusing on NASCAR.
@jonnymv94 before that they where running to the cars from the other side of race track. Anyway, that narrow starting start/finish .......... with all that crowd ... epic. Its like the whole world is watching. And the moment of start without any sound ... i think that today for example in F1 they feel the same at the start ... the moment on the grid before the lights go on and then off ... its like forever
I wish Hackman worked with Wes Anderson on more movies.Far better then anything Murray has done with Anderson.Hackman lays it down as Royal. Gtreat actor doing comedy!!!!!!!i can't understand why Murray gets so much praise in all these films????
@gorrilla1234 GT40 was runaway spending at Ford, and it created a good car. Ford was pissed that it couldn't buy Ferrari for 15 million, so it spent 100 million to beat them. When Ferrari and Porsche countered with runaway spending they massacred the GT40. Ford opened up the Pandora's Box of money in the auto racing world.
I love the way Melville builds tension before the action. In many scenes of this type of genre, you'd usually have a different setup, with a huge gunfight at the end. Melville plays this in a subdued, poetic way.
Don't understimate the Japanes Cinema: lots of talented directors, often forced to make erotic/porn movies for instance. But very stylish. And Suzuki and others with the Yakuza movies. Check 'm out all and you won't be sorry. Youth of the Beast is available in the Criterion Collection. Great label.
Funny how this movie is advertised in Porsche enthusiast stores like Performance/Automotion. There'll never be another movie as simple and classic as this one, and there will never be another movie that will be filmed in the actual Le Sarthe racetrack.
When you read who he had doing the driving sequences it was the who is who of Enduro racing, the greats, ahead of its tiem, lke GrandPrix {Garner could drive too!} Brabham {jack{ drove the camera car, all the great F-1 drivers were involved. This is a classic
