This is the only movie I know of in which one, who is not a race fan, has to redefine what a movie is supposed to be, in order to truly appreciate it. Sadly most folks are too ridged in their thinking to do this. If you are a race fan then this is not necessary. You just accept it and LOVE it! McQueen did something very special here that I seriously doubt we'll ever see the likes of again.
The correct quote is: "Lotta people go through life doing things badly. Racing's important to men who do it well. When you're racing, it's life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting. "
@jonnymv94 before that they where running to the cars from the other side of race track. Anyway, that narrow starting start/finish .......... with all that crowd ... epic. Its like the whole world is watching. And the moment of start without any sound ... i think that today for example in F1 they feel the same at the start ... the moment on the grid before the lights go on and then off ... its like forever
When you read who he had doing the driving sequences it was the who is who of Enduro racing, the greats, ahead of its tiem, lke GrandPrix {Garner could drive too!} Brabham {jack{ drove the camera car, all the great F-1 drivers were involved. This is a classic
Funny how this movie is advertised in Porsche enthusiast stores like Performance/Automotion. There'll never be another movie as simple and classic as this one, and there will never be another movie that will be filmed in the actual Le Sarthe racetrack.
this movie is soooo underrated!!! i watch it every year. the filmmaking is beautiful. I think it got trashed and was a failure during it's release because people didn't realize that it's actually an art film. the movie destroyed mcqueen financially as well as his marriage. this movie star literally suffered for his art!!! LOL
This is the film that bankrupted McQueen. No real story line apart from the death of a competitor the previous year - pure McQueen! Steve also thinking about making a film about motorcycle racing, he wrote a script ideas for an epic movie called "Yucatan."
@gorrilla1234 GT40 was runaway spending at Ford, and it created a good car. Ford was pissed that it couldn't buy Ferrari for 15 million, so it spent 100 million to beat them. When Ferrari and Porsche countered with runaway spending they massacred the GT40. Ford opened up the Pandora's Box of money in the auto racing world.
this is movie no more no less...movies today define themselves about the number of people witch whatch them at the first weekend. this mcqeen movie was a flop and today its culture
@SpeedingStudent Holy shit, you really stuck a nerve with Pinin500. Anyways. Yes, Ferrari didn't fair as well as Porsche's 917 did. Heck, the 917 still proved competitive in the hands of privateers in the 80's. Ford couldn't keep up with the stricter engine rules like Porsche did. Turbos were things of fairy tales to Ford at the time. I like Ford, look at my Eleanor on my profile, but they can't match Porsche. Also, Ferrari focusing on F1 isn't quite as boring as Ford focusing on NASCAR.
