Thanks for your advice,I’m struggling with my straight key to get the right rhythm and spacing so I’ll try with paddles. Did you learn cw on your own or with someone like Long Island cw club.
Hello Gil, I dig you approach. As an amateur musician, I totally understand how it makes more sense to listen to the rhythm rather than going letter by letter. Question for you: using your approach, how do I start? Can you point to some appropriate course? Should I get a paddle and a Morse trainer right away? Thanks in advance for your answers (it might be a good subject for a new video!).
Hello. Sending will come naturally. Practice listening 90% of the time, sending 10%, and you can do that later. I'd suggest using a Morse phone app with the Koch method. Not sure what's available today..
A suivre. Pierre - F/VE2IPX
You don't need the cap across the input, only needed for random long wire to tune out reactance, but it would be better if it were a variable cap for this purpose !
PMR is not effective in this area due to interference (Toys, iot, babyphones, ect..). The solution is to switch to FRS, which provides clear communication without even needing CTCSS. Its usable range is twice that of PMR
7 years later : I think the idea of showing where you were was excellent, after all POTA is mainly about getting out and about , and for those can't get out much at least this provides a bit of discovery..
I'll bet the reason it wasn't spot on with where you wanted was related do the velocity factor of the 450 ohm line. I've hear the impedance of 450 ohm line which is commonly sold is lower than advertised but the velocity factor would change the length and I've had advertised velocity factors be off with many other products so I wouldn't be surprised it is with 450 ohm line. With modern nanovna's its essy to measure, in fact, an antenna analyzer can do it.
@@RadioPrepperI don't read manuals; you think I read video descriptions? 😊 Seriously, though, you both have great channels and I've watched both for a long time.
Hoping to put together a collinear roll up on 6m . Mr Fong version possibly . 6 meters is a band which should be used a lot more. Right now, skip opens up there occasionally.
@@RadioPrepper Yes, and in California it was used by our Highway Patrol for many many years. It definitely served them VERY well. It's a great band for ground communications !
Gil, I have a TX-500 and a KX-2. My KX-2 is also in a pelican case, but it's a commercial product from Radio Set Go, and has all the interfaces accessable on a cover plate. I mainly have it for CW, but wonder what your thoughts for digital modes would be? I don't like the spaghetti cabling of the TX500 that Julian has referenced many times so I'm thinking of going to the KX-2 for that since I have a good interface. It has a solar input with charge controller, etc.
@@RadioPrepper Using a digirig inside the case I could modify the plate to put a USB connection then it would just be one wire to my computer. My TX500 on the other hand is a mess of wires!
Great job guys! Julian, next time maybe you should have a microphone a bit closer to you, like Gil has. Would make you much easier to hear. Otherwise awesome to see you guys collaborating!
About 2 or 3 radios in the discussion, I've either owned or, at the least, seen photos of it on the Internet. It would have been nice if you had inserted an image of each radio, just before it was going to be discussed, especially the kits. For example: the radio that was said to fit in the pocket of your jeans. At about the 90-minute mark you did have the actual radio on hand to display. At the minimum, if you had a text display of the radio/model number in the corner would have helped, especially with the audio cutting out on-and-off at one end, while Julian's audio was consistent (just consistently low). Overall, I enjoyed the discussion - Thanks for doing it! (and now you have a new Yaesu portable to pontificate on, whenever it's released). 73
Sadly Julian is barely audible and there is such a difference between Gil and Julian’s audio levels that I would need very fast AGC to enjoy this video 😢
