Thank you for the video! I have built this project but with the only difference being I used a 100w resistor. As far as the "rf probe" function goes, I am getting a reading with a multimeter set to DC but it seems to be about 27% off (to high) with the calculation you hold up on the paper. Am I missing something?
Revision, I now see it depends on the frequency. I was using two vhf radios in my prior tests that I mentioned and now I tried UHF and its 800% higher. I'm thinking HF should be pretty close but I will try that another time. Thanks again for the project!
@@RadioPrepper Not to be argumentative, but ....where there's a Will, there's a way ! I think if these folks really wanted to operate, they would find a way ! There are just too many affordable alternatives, to keep you off the air, these days ! Perhaps what's lacking is a little ingenuity ? And too, these may be Hams that haven't bothered to learn Morse Code ? Which serves well, when looking for a place to operate ! But so many offer excuses why they can't learn the Morse Code ! But I think they are cheating themselves, and missing out on great fun ! But that is just my opinion, and I don't want to stray too far from the topic ! Just offering a great escape, for those that feel trapped and helpless by Contesters !
@@RadioPrepper Not to drag this on, but not knowing how long you've been licensed, ( Guessing you are a licensed Amateur ?), but Amateur Radio has undergone several changes thru the years ! Some through attrition, some thru advancements in technology ! Not to preach to the choir ! But the latter has likely been most influential, just by the nature of the beast ! Pushing the Radio Amateur out of their role of providing Emergency communications ! In many cases, by individuals that were in charge of Cities Emergency centers, that lacked understanding of the value of the Amateur Radio Service ! Where they chose in many cases, to throw money at it, and bought expensive, many times, " Motorola " radios, and then passed them out like candy, to untrained personnel ! And with the push from Radio manufacturers, to try and help themselves stay alive, to them lower the requirements for becoming a licensed operator ! So what we see today, is simply where Amateur Radio has morphed, into a completely different Animal ! Going from a , " Service ", to now what most think of as a, " Hobby " ! It is what it is ! The Genie's out of the bottle, and it's not going back in ! My advice, if I may, would be instead of sitting on the sidelines, would be to become involved ! Perhaps push yourself into learning new things ! Enjoy the Freedom to communicate, while we still have the ability ! In closing, as the old adage states, " If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem " ! 🤔.....? Just Say'n !
I wouldnt use these for prepping. I bet even with GPS off there is a backdoor way of turning it on letting some scrotes find you, your stuff and family.
There is an option to add your amateur radio callsign. Is that what disables encryption? It seems like in the USA you are better off not using the callsign which isn’t required on 915Mhz even if you have one.
You mentioned having something like 9 or 10 meshtastic devices. Do you have 1:1 ratio pairing to a single phone/tablet per meshtastic node or do you have multiple coexisting on the same phone?
@@RadioPrepper I’m following. Each meshtastic device can only be paired with one phone/tablet/computer. I’m not clear on the opposite. Can you have multiple meshtastic devices paired to a single phone/tablet/computer? Thanks for your educating video and taking the time to answer questions.
How much more distance is it possible to achieve switching from Long Range fast/fast to Very Long Range/Slow? I live in a crowded city so looking for ways to achieve better distance even if it's way slower.
Not sure but the problem is that everyone is on LongFast but for a private channel, you could try slower, but not the minimum, which doesn't really work.
Thanks Gil for the great information on meshtastic device for communication when everything else is down ..... nice to setup a network of them =) de Pat N5VMO
As an older aged learner, I found this useful. It highlighted some concepts that I’ve been grappling with. For someone without English as a first language you’ve done well with the delivery. As an OCD, I jar with the use of capitals and lower case - RADIO, not RADiO. Problem with decoding though if trying to something which is deliberately non-English, eg 5 letter groups. Lucky we are not at war!
That short coil looks more like a Buddipole coil for 40 - 10 meters. I have the Buddipole Deluxe although I rarely use it, and it has the same coil clips. The Mad Dog coil looks similar to the Wolf River Coils and REZ coils. I wonder if the Mad Dog coil can handle 100 watts. People have said that the Wolf River Coils coil melts when it gets too hot. 73 KD5YOU
In testing the one I just completed I was heard by an SDR weblinked radio in San Francisco California. I am in Mesa AZ. (about 600 miles give or take). Unfortunately my RX circuit has a squealing noise much like a digital mode signal being received
hi, i have an 18v solar panel. so with this mppt board will it charge the 3s 18650 batteries directly from the mppt? or does it need the bms board too? i note that the 18650 3s requires 12.6v to charge, so does the mppt board put out 12.6v? thanks.
I don't remember, but there are mppt boards specifically for 3S LION packs, otherwise you need a BMS because most regular mppt boards are for lead-acid batteries. Check out my video on the Wonton board...
@@RadioPrepper Alright, and a few more things if thats ok. If you were to buy one, where would you do so, and if you changed the antenna, would it no longer be waterproof? And lastly, do you think the PD785 is a good choice? I heard its basically a 985 but without Tier III DMR, which us regular mortals don't need anyway.
Hi, no idea where. I don't think changing the antenna would nullify the waterproofing. The 785 would still be a good choice, though look at the Ailunce HD2..
I was working a 200w station at a friends house he had a vertical and didnt believe in grounding. The heli mic touched my lip wile transmitting and man that hurt had me jumping out of my chair.
FAKE VIDEO: The operation of an antenna and a tuner described in the first part is only what the author of the video believes. The same goes for what the impedance is... Very naïve! Knowledge belongs to those who have studied: everyone else publishes videos. Overestimating one's own competence is typical of those who know very little (Dunning-Kruger effect)
@@RadioPrepper It's not necessary: a good book on antennas is enough. Which books did you choose for your studies? The theory illustrated in the first half of the video is based on which book?
Since I've come to rely on your unun-winding content, I'll probably check one of these out. But not with AliExpress; that company has been nothing but a recurring nightmare. Of the four or five things I've ordered from them, four of them were scams that I had to ultimately get a refund on, and the fifth appeared to be a scam but after getting a refund on that too, the product actually showed up about 4 months later! I'll probably go eBay or something...
Hello Gil! I initially watched this video some time ago, probably 4+ years ago. I just joined VMARS today. Thanks again for introducing me to the PRC-320. It’s a fantastic radio!
Bonjour Gil. Dois-je comprendre que le cablage est différent entre le (tr)Usdx et le Micro Retevis HK008. J'avais essayé avec des adaptateurs du commerce pour chaque fiche. Ça ne marchait pas. 73 de F4LCF
The problem is Devil runs the world. He is lier and murderer. This is the reason why Hitler got the power, but Christ was executed as "blasphemer" and "rioter" by denunciation of clergy. This is the reason why the whole world is Sodom. That's why we've got the Gospel about the God's kingdom. Jehovah would put everything in order. The dead will be resurected and we'll meet our beloved ones again! :-)
Thanks for the video. I was looking at the Wolf River coil, but their website is rather poor and the prices steep, so I was considering building my own coil. The Mad Dog is very affordable and is a well thought out design, so I just purchased one.
Hello and thank you for the video, I’m having some issues when trying to upload the custom firmware, I have followed your instructions but when I get to the part where I select the com port and hit connect instead of the percentage going up I just get a message saying “no data received, is the radio connected and in flash mode? Please try again” I’ve tried many times and just keep getting that message if anyone could help me with this I’d be most grateful as I’m new to these radios and don’t know much about programming them
Ron Taylor fixed my QCX Mini with the same problem, no power out, yet it could receive great. It turned out to be L1 and L2 toroids not having the enamel completely burned away. He mailed it back to me and it should be here next Tuesday (5-28-24). I have a 40 meter version coming (QCX-Mini) that I will be using an exacto knife to scrape off the enamel. 72 de AI5DD Joseph Anthony
