It’s often said that Nashville Tennessee is a ten-year town. It takes 10 years to build your circle, land that job or big audition, 10 years to be discovered and get your shot, 10 years to write the song that’ll change your life forever.
Join Troy Cartwright as he sits down with hit songwriters, musicians and music city execs to discuss their journey through Music Row, the struggles of getting started and what it takes to stay at the top.

My dude, so happy you’ve made it a whole year. This podcast has had such a huge impact on my songwriting journey. Thanks for all the work you put into it!
Have you ever written a song that is priceless to you? You will not sell it for any amount of money? What is the true VALUE of your Art? feel free to use these questions on the pod, I find them to be revealing question to ask a songwriter...
26:10 is the best advice ever! "Once the door is open, keep sending new music and listen to feedback." I just got back from attending the 2024 Hawaii Songwriting Festival and met a lot of amazing writers, publishers, Music Supervisors. A few doors have opened! Haha! Now it's on me to show up as a producer🤘 Mahalo from HawaiI! PS: I praised your podcast to a few of the writers at the festival! I need an affiliate link! haha! Just playing. I'm a huge fan!
Man, I started listening to Benjy Davis Project in high school back when he dropped Lousiana Saturday Night. He was an absolutely legend around Tulsa. So excited to see his still crushing.
well, hello there! First view, and first comment. I won’t lie, I’ll have to finish in the AM tho. I’m finding all these interviews super insightful, encouraging, and motivating… can’t wait to listen. Thank you for all the work you put into this pod Troy 😊
Its very fascinating to look behind the curtain in the music business, though it seems the True Art gets lost in the process and the outcome is sometimes capitalistic
Just drove 5 hours to see David at the Turning Point Casino. Been listening to him since 2008 when I heard his song "I'm about to come alive". His music touches me in a way I have never been touched by another artist. Every mile was well worth it, and it happened to be his birthday to top it off. Thanks David for spending that evening with me. I'd drive all day to hear you sing again and tell the stories of your music.
The world's a big place there's alot going on outside of what you know and just because you don't know it doesn't mean it isn't a big deal to alot of other people with that said no idea who the fuck these chumps are
Love the pod! The only thing I think is missing is to interview more session musicians. I think the majority of musicians are not the singer-songwriters, but rather the backing musicians and session musicians that accompany then. Therefore, I think hearing from more session and backing musicicians would be more helpful/relatable to a larger portion of your audience who want to get into the music industry. Ofc I'd especially like more drummers, being a drummer myself!
check out the interviews with Chris Mchugh, Harry Miree, Derek Wells and Dave Cohen! all incredible session and touring musicians - we’ll have more on soon. Thanks for listening!
I'm also from Nashville I have sat next to singers and musicians I have met at a happy hour..... The dreams are so real and so is there talent! I think the incredible love they get from eachother is like nothing else so that becomes the reason they stay. This town was so tiny compared to today but the vibe is the same just a bit commercialized downtown but still bars all over every night holding writers night singing rounds. If I was a country music fan that would be what I would seek out. The fun of seeing the possibility of the future star. Song writers night is not why people come to Nashville but the GOAT were often found that discover way, Tayler Swift, Chris Stapleton, Brooks and Dunn, for example were not out singing but writing songs and that is were the crazy talent is!
Lily is one of the best. Amazing talent and a hustler. Love the gratitude she had for the podcast. Saying that BB made her feel like she wasn’t crazy or alone in chasing this… exactly what you’re doing with this podcast. 10/10
this video appeared in my suggestions: thanks for your work: I think these videos help us better understand how people broke into song writing, their struggles, the lifestyle and some of their personal highlights
My husband is a 3 time Grammy winner..(I’m proud! ♥️) come check them out at The Station Inn on Monday nights!!! He’s been here since 1984 after quitting the road with Glen Campbell
$900?! Man… that won’t even buy a ticket to the show to see her perform it. Absolutely shameful that Spotify is trying to cut rates even further. In the meantime I’d hope that artist like Taylor Swift are paying attention to this disparity and doing what they can to make it right… Y’all should show this clip to congress next time we lobby for songwriter rates
Wonderful interview. I understand some of the personal struggles myself with mental health as I experienced a lot of similar issues. I’m so happy to see she has learned a healthy balance and is doing so well. Makes my heart happy💜
That's a great point. The same goes for public speakers that have nothing to show like a video or anything to showcase anything they have ever done. Critical mistake.
