I’m a fan of the older lenses…..18 f2….35 f1.4……56 f1.2 and in the process of getting the 90 f2…..all these on my xpro2…..really good fun to shoot with, everyday….
Excellent tests! As a hobby photographer, and fan of fujifilm's cameras, it is very frustrating to see the state of the firmwares... I am keeping my 4th gen processor cameras. But if I were like many who need these cameras for professional purposes, I would have switched already...
Very interesting and well done video. I noticed however the shadow recovery was done at ISO 800 not base ISO? It would be interesting how the dynamic range compares with both cameras at their base ISO (I believe the XT5 is lower at 125) which is where they should perform at their best. Thanks
I’m going to Hawaii soon and am going to shoot everything with a 35&25 mm lens. I want my shots to have a vintage film effect. Any pointers/tips? (Fuji XT2)
I'm a beginner who went with the X-T5 and have no regrets. If the X-T50 had no IBIS (for weight and price savings), the 26MP sensor (for price savings), was weather sealed, and had the bigger battery (worth the weight difference IMO), and was cheaper I may have gone with it. But as it is, the X-T5 was the much better buy for me. Like you said, it gives me room to grow.
It's also a language play. You can say you improved af in one aspect even if 10 other aspects were diminished..you could say we improved af but not add that in doing it more methods of af are worse..
It is possible that it is done in order to release a new body with noticeably better af when compared to this one. It's a win win to start the af as good as it can be and then make it worse for a company. Helps them sell it at release and get good reviews. Then make it worse via updates then as the new camera gets released they haven't had to make big improvements to af in new one to make it look better in comparison to the one they have made worse..
The XT4 is my last Fuji product. I’m not a stickler for brands, so I’ll let the fanboys whine. The first time I touched a Sony, I just knew my affair with Fuji ends with the XT4.
Don't wait on Fujifilm. I've downgraded two Fujifilm XH2s cameras from 7.0 to 1.03 now. As your tests show, it is much more reliable. It sucks losing out on red frame recording, iso mapped to the dial, the fix for the 1080p issues, app compatibility, etc. but I can live without all of those. We've invested thousands into lenses with autofocus. I'm not slowing down my process for videos/photos when I paid all of that money to speed it up. Everyone can say switch camera systems, but that's a difficult choice to make if you have a lot of gear for that system. For now, downgrading seems like the best choice if users are comfortable with doing it.
i am planning a holiday in tanzania and Zanzibar in september. i need reliable autofocus by then. if Fuji doesn't give us a fix til then, i will also downgrade my firmware. what good is reala ace if the fotos are put of focus? shame on fuji, its just frustrating and tiring. again and again.
It's like paying extra to enjoy suffering...i'll just stay at FF, matured systems with way more options at hand AND more affordable. This feels like testing on yourself and the bad thing is that this testing phase will last a good while.
I am getting really frustrated with my X-h2s because the continuous AF keeps unfocusing my shots. It focuses and unfocuses even when I am NOT moving! I tried recording me and my boyfriend doing lifts on the beach, standing in the same spot, but the camera keeps hunting. I did not realise until after trying several lifts that the camera would focus and unfocus repeatedly. I had to change to manual focus, which fixed it. But the only reason that worked was because we were standing in the same spot. I couldn't record myself and my boyfriend walking down the beach because I had no one to turn the manual focus and the Continuous AF was being a di*k and unfocusing my shot every third second. This sucks because I was really looking forward to using this camera for video, but I feel like I have to do everything manual because the autofocus is NOT reliable at all! I mean, I can understand that it may not be able to track movement all the time, but when Im even just standing on the sam spot, it keeps hunting. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? It just doesnt make sense to me that the camera should unfocus and focus that often as mine does. Was using the 33mm f/1.4 lens. I am actually thinking about buying the Sony A7 iv.
Mass exodus from Fujifilm to different systems is needed to change anything. Switching to Nikon was my first step. Insane. Very expensive. But: Fujifilm won't change anything, as they aren't investing a lot in R&D. Sold my XH2 and the first 4 lenses, keeping my XH2s which is probably a mistake. IQ is far better with Nikon, the AF has some issues too, object recognition is worse, but not with as many bugs in AF and tracking. Nobody is buying a Fujifilm for its great AF or tracking. So Fujifilm doesn't care a lot. Cosmetic.... while many users are reporting improvements, where nothing was changed. Placebo effect is mighty.
I would pick Black Magic all day. The image in my opinion is more organic and rich than the XH2-S. I find the XH2-S has a really one-dimensional, overly digital image and I hate the way the Fuji renders skin. I’m not saying the Fuji is bad, but to me it just has a very digital mirrorless look, while the Black Magic has a look closer to that of a proper cinema camera. I would tell someone getting into film making to pick up a used BMPCC 4k with a speed-booster and a sigma 18-35mm. It would be cheaper than the XH2-S body alone. With the money saved, you could even invest into more lighting.
Thank you for making this video. I think it's important to highlight things like this, and it is quite a shame Fuji has done this.. This points to a serious problem with their QA/Validation process or how the feedback from QA/Validation is getting utilized back in a cycle to fix problems. This simply should not be happening. I don't do videos and my XT50 seems to overall focus well but if I was doing video and seeing these issues, I would be looking at Sony, Canon or Nikon at this point.
Can i ask if changing the AFC custom setting made a difference? There are custom.setting exactly for obstacles etc but i dont have much experience using them.
I typically use spot focus, but how does it compare against v1 firmware? Pal2tech seemed to agree with quick testing that the autofocus has improved vs v1.
Thanks, Thierry, this needs to be reported as much as possible, by as many as possible! I am on an X-T5 and I love the size, the screen mechanism, the colours and, most of all the lenses. BUT... AF is getting beyond ridiculous now... Firmware making it worse, reverse kaizen! ☠️I am also still a Nikon DSLR user and the reason I have not jumped on Nikon mirrorless is because what I really would like is f/1.4 (premium) lenses. Which isn't their strategy... The f/1.2 are massive, beyond the sweet spot for me.
This is a great review by the way. Just keep in mind this is Fujifilm we are talking about. The fact that they simply can’t rollback to a previous state of software and ‘fix’ the current issues implies that there must be some very delicate code they’ve managed to look over causing chaos across a vast amount of users. The glass is always half full so let’s just pray they fix this once and for all sooner than later. I can imagine Fuji employees must be getting blasted at work 😂
Thanks for the video, Thierry, I would agree that the AF is not where it should be on the Fuji system. Curious if you also tested "Area" mode in AF/MF Setting/AF Mode in this comparison. I can't remember where it was recommended but I remember it being suggested that "area" is much more reliable than 'multi', and I seem to get decent results in video with much less hunting and missing than in "Multi" mode, even in firmware v7.0. For stills I'm on "Single Point", and have been shooting AF-C on the more modern XFLMWR lenses. Most shots are sharp, but like others are experiencing here in the comments, sometimes I've had the the camera focus somewhere other than the eye when shooting people. With some of the older Fuji lenses I've recently been using the back button/AFS technique and it seems to be working ok. I'm also pretty happy to hop into manual focus if needed as I have a few manual lenses and I'm used to it. I can understand why people are thinking about jumping ship as workarounds are not ideal and there are of course far more reliable systems out there (in terms of autofocus especially). For me at the present time, the sensor and in turn the look of the files coming out of this camera are worth the extra effort.
Agree with part of your video , agree on the AF , it is unacceptable situation and needs to be fixed. Then you say you can go with BM camera with MF focus and internal RAW , Why not them shoot with MF or AFS on your Fuji , as for raw that is side note then buy a ATMOS or BM Assist which is cheaper than BM camera. it does not make scene, you have invest a lot of time and money in to your Fuji and you will now have to buy into a total new system and then you have to recoup back the money into a new system. I understand how you feel and frustration with the situation , stay strong , hopfully it will be resolve soon er than later.
Why not 1.04 , the last one before 2.00? Ver 2.00's description mentioned "The motion prediction algorithm has been improved to enable stable tracking of subjects moving at high speed in the frame."
Sorry but no... I kept a VERY close eye on the focusing behavior in 1.03 in your footage, paying particular attention to the bokeh pattern in the background during your tests, and even 1.03 has DISMAL performance when compared against it's peers from the same time period, such as Sony, Canon and even Nikon (which says a lot). Whilst 1.03 was WORLDS better than 7, and v4 on X-T5, it's still choppy, hunting, and displaying behaviors indicative of contrast-detect AF tech, not PDAF. Fuji has a LONG way to go in fixing this cluster fuck of a AF issue.
