On this channel I delve into all aspects of the World of Greyhawk, the fantasy campaign created by Gary Gygax, co-inventor of Dungeons & Dragons. You'll find in-depth analyses of modules, books, and boxed sets, overviews synthesizing information across a broad spectrum of sources, and original content adding to the rich legacy of Oerth.

@@GreyhawkGrognard - On a side note, a few years back I saw this funny meme - it looked like that old "Hollywood Squares" show, with a pic of a character for each alignment. All I can remember is Chaotic Neutral having peanut butter all over the character with a funny caption (cant remember), and a Lawful Evil one dressed in black armor that captioned: "Lawful Evil gets sh*t done". 😆
This was great! 🙂Thanks Joe! That was the best break-down of Ralishaz I've heard yet, and actually super helpful. Looking forward to what your next one will be.
They add a new continent, every so often, and it is unmapped until the DM maps it. In the latest couple of Editions, they wiped out the two oldest sections of Ed Greenwood’s world, the part that was Egypt and Sumerian based, because they thought that there was not enough interest in them. The reason that Greyhawk is so empty is that no authors were interested enough in it to set their novels there. Ed Greenwood was interested in telling stories, whereas Gary Gygax was just interested in playing his games there. If he wasn’t there, he let it stay empty.
It's been a long, long time, but I remember in, like, the early 90s maybe, an older player teaching me that Ralishaz made for a really good *IMP* that can tempt PCs (and NPCs the group has befriended). It was the Carl Sargent era of Greyhawk and while we were reading Sargent, we were playing FR. Again, it's been a long, long time since I ever even considered Ralishaz but, listening to the video, I think I really like Ralishaz as an IMP in the game to tempt PCs or to have corrupted the group's favorite barkeep, rather than a deity.
I think it's interesting that From The Ashes expanded the people who worship him to include those who make offerings to placate him, so that they will avoid misfortune. This should be something that evil deities would receive in most campaign worlds. For example, many people who would never worship a god of disease would still make offerings during a plague to persuade that god to spare them.
There was a very cool reference to Ralishaz in the novel Artifact Of Evil. When Melf suffered a bit of bad luck, he muttered, " 'Shaz sneers at me!' It shows how Ralishaz is perceived in the Flanaess by those who do not worship him. He is clearly seen as the cause of unexpected instances of bad luck.
Depends on the type. Greater Gods are generally aloof, acting through intermediaries if at all. Lesser gods and demigods, on the other hand, are much more prone to direct involvement on the Material Plane.
My recollections of 1e did not include those rectangular magical devices that seem to have everyone hypnotized these days. Wish I could make a few of these smaller cons. That could be fun.
A VFW Hall (respect), strategy games, cools folks that are actually enthusiasts, smiles, and fun. This organic authenticity gives me hope for the OSR/for the love of the game side of the hobby. Thanks for sharing this.
Thom is a Friend, I've been to 3 of them, wish I could have made the others, but always coincides with Vacations. It's a great environment, and a great time...
Thanks Grognard! Don’t attend many conventions so these images and reviews are a real treat. Would love to see you do five minutes or less on future cons.
It was my first con and I had a great time. I was a player in that AD&D game and it was a lot of fun. It was a pleasure to meet you, and I look forward to using Adventures Dark and Deep in my home campaign and painting up those Field of Fantasy Miniatures I bought.
Sounds/looks like a good time. In my old age, I just have no patience for big cons. The table is looking really good as well. Impressive with everything all together.
Very interested in having my players explore Blackmore sometime. A little confused as to how to best weave it into my current Grayhawk campaign, set in 76.
This is a pretty good one! Greyhawk has had so many huge battles, so much warfare for the last 1,000 years, that you could indeed stick this anywhere in the Flanaess. It's to the extent that it makes me think that a medieval, middle ages-centric world would have to have escaped the awful "high infant mortality rate" that the real world did to sustain the population size needed to maintain such constant warfare.
