I spent 78 weeks suffering from 2 bulging dying discs at L4 and L5. It’s been a month since the surgery. I am able to pick things up off the floor more easily, but I still get significant sciatica pain whenever I sit or walk for more than 30 minutes. They said it could take three months for the sciatic nerve to recover. I only took Norco one day, which was the same night after the surgery. The pain before the surgery, especially the final 6 weeks was so extreme that I really didn’t feel that I needed painkillers afterwards. It felt better actually and the steroids were plenty effective to reduce that inflammation and pain, at least while I was on the steroids. (Methyl prednisone) I don’t take opiates because I don’t want end up a drug addict like millions of other people have become after getting hooked on opioid pain medications.

Do you have any leg pain or sciatica hip pain at all? I had this surgery 5 years ago and can't remember if my leg pain was 100% gone or not reason I am asking is My wife had this surgery last week and says her leg pain is still hurting almost as bad as pre surgery?

I just found your videos this morning. Thank you! They are the most educational & so needed as people go through this. I am someone who has been struggling with DDD, autoimmune issues, herniations, spondylolethsis & stenosis for 15 years. My energetic life has progressively been reduced to where I cannot comfortably leave the house. I’ve been through shots that didn’t work, years of PT & aqua therapy. In May I heard a pop in my back just bending over to pick something up. Two days later I could not move. My spondy had slipped further, I have another herniation & my inflammation was through the roof. I will have my consult with a neurosurgeon in 2 weeks, and the videos help to gain knowledge on what to expect going forward. I put surgery off for sooo long and now just want to soldier through, get my life and a good quality of life back!

I love to see someone in the field realize MCKENZIE EXERCISES and COBRA poses wont fix "REAL" Sciatic pain. Most people have no idea what Sciatic pain is! One of the most painful pains ever! I had a discectomy that re-ruptured 2 years later. You think this one is painful... nothing like a re-ruptured disc, imagine the pain you had pre surgery times 2! Anyway I ended up with a fusion that did not fuse, then had a revision in April of 2023 and finally feel normal. My discectomy never felt normal almost like something was not right or I would injure it if I did anything but walk. I was right after sneezing. What is crazy is my wife has been having disc issues for a few months and having her Microdicectomy next week! I hope yours continues to heal and feel better.

Thanks for the video brotha…its very tough going though this…I have same symptoms currently…flare ups happen then I’d be fine for months at a time, then flare up again and I’d be out for another month…went from 2.5mm 2016, 5.5mm 2019 now 2024 7.5mm I’m ready for the surgery. It’s so traumatic having been so active like you and knowing I can event protect my family when I’m out in the world. Feels so helpless going through this. But im ready for the next phase of my life. Literally was just in the same boat. Couldn’t stand for more than the time it took to brush my teeth. Was completely living off of my back and stomach for almost 2 months when this all came about. Had a micro discectomy 3 days ago and the amount of relief was almost emotional. Was up and walking the next day. Still very sore near the incision. But even at day 3 I’m able to walk multiple times 20 min each time and then back to resting. Very minor tingling in the calf. Still pretty weak but I’m sure it’s because i haven’t moved my body in over 2 months. Just trying to be extremely careful the next 6 weeks while trying to be active. Great video

Very humbling to hear your journey. I’m scheduled for surgery in 2 weeks and honestly scared to death but the pain I deal with in the mornings is so bad I am in tears just trying to get to the bathroom. I have to pop Aleve and hobble around for an hr before I can even function. I’ve tried PT, read the Back Mechanic and the only 2 things that don’t make things worse are press ups and walking. Even that is all short lived as I wake up the next morning in the same amount of pain. I hear stories about people getting through these without surgery, but the pain in the mornings for me is so terrible, I don’t know how that’s possible.

i'm 24 years old and had intense leg pain and couldnt really sit for 1 year. And then 3 weeks ago i did endoscopic discectomy for L4/L5 and it was the best decision ever! I can really recomend do the endoscopic and not the micro surgery. i can already go jogging a little bit. and the surgery wasnt painfull at all because they dont open up your back.

(I live in the UK) at least I’ll be able to walk to the loo and get a drink of cold water from the fridge without crying now! I’m hoping this will only be for a few days as I know it’s an opioid.

@@wilsonarmstrong5000 Pool is great bc the buoyancy of your spine in the water takes the pressure of gravity pulling on the disc... I just use my apt complex pool. Spend out 45 min in the pool, walk forward n backward, side to side and stretching, Really focusing on my core when I'm in the pool. If you have a gym membership that has one or know somone who has a pool, I would high recommend it

Great video thanks for sharing. Working as an OT and having had this chronic pain and now the surgery 2 days ago it really is humbling and I empathize with patients in pain as I’m sure you do also. One question- how soon did you get into the pool for the leg exercises? Also I hear people say wait to 12 weeks to start formal PT to reduce risk of overdoing it in PT and reherniating. What are your thoughts on that? Thanks and God bless!
@drericbroadworth
@drericbroadworth 2 месяца назад
It's definitely humbling! I had surgery on May 19 started pool exercises on July 4. I would listen to your surgeon since they know the type of surgery they performed and restrictions you should follow but it's typically no bending, lifting or twisting for a period of time. I was encouraged to do light walking and that I could stand or do activities that didn't involve any bending, lifting or twisting so I did light step downs, walking, heel raises. I do believe that just pure bed rest could inhibit the healing process but you do need to be cautious with activity.

I’m on day 5 post op. Agree with a couple of things you said: 1. The surgery is well worth it. If you have tried a conservative approach & that hasn’t worked don’t put off the surgery out of fear. 2. #2 is the challenge. Keeping regular & getting on & off that toilet seat.

@fuelhealthwellness
@fuelhealthwellness 3 месяца назад
I think you can get back to that. I would find a physical therapist that specializes in working with runners. You will want a plan that is very thorough and slowly progresses. I'm about a year out now and getting back to running 2-3 miles in intervals of half mile to 1 mile at a time. Running hasn't been my primary focus though since I would line to return more to CrossFit and some weightlifting. However, I would like to be able to run longer distances such as 10 miles or a marathon if I wish which I know is possible.

MRI shows broad herniated disc, having severe pain down the left leg, numbness, tingling and muscle atrophy. Started doing spinal decompression last two weeks, 3 days a week. However after each session the pain is even worst. I’ve seen an Orthopedic surgeon and he says I’m at the point of needing surgery. I opted to continue spinal depressions for another 4 weeks then go back and see him. I was in the process of becoming a personal trainer (exams around the corner). Now I’m worried that my passion for lifting, strength training and teaching may be in jeopardy. I really don’t want surgery, hoping it will go away on its own. The last 8 weeks has been hard on me.
