If you need 5 adults to tell you, as a parent, to “have patience and give it a chance”, but to “be wary off inefficiencies” then you’re a block head and you are a child yourself.

You mentioned it--separate the teaching from the evaluating role. If the teachers aren't the ones doing the grading, then they won't be inflating them. There should be department-wide exams and not even the teachers should be told exactly what's on the test. They can focus on teaching the objectives and not test material.

Good analysis. About the bell curve controversy -- people who do not require much additional brain glucose to perform intellectually rigorous tasks usually have a higher IQ than those who require additional brain glucose. This might be inherited and may be partially associated with race. This is a testable theory -- and may be able to explain why Asians and people descended from European jewry score higher on IQ tests than other folks.

Charles is either ignorant of or purposefully obfuscating the correlation between race and socioeconomic class as well as how that links with violent crime. The disproportionate rate of violence in black low class neighborhoods is not mirrored in their white or Latino counterparts. If you invite lower class people into wealthier areas, this problem will not be ameliorated, if anything it will be enhanced. By diversifying the socioeconomic class in a school you are diversifying the race, which has negative effects for many involved.

Secondary education in particular has been undermined by a refusal to acknowledge that we have social classes in America which promotes inappropriate curriculum for working class and poor kids with lower IQs who are forced to take strictly academic classes mostly from college educated women instead of trades programs from a combination of industrial arts teachers and journeymen master tradesmen who could help them to learn skills. Under the current regime they’re being “prepared” for college, even though they’ve been socially promoted through classes whose exams they couldn’t pass, to steer them towards college, which they cannot afford, and where they would immediately flunk out in all probability anyway, since open admissions state universities do indeed still flunk the incompetents out.

The fight originally was simply labor and management. Even though teachers outnumbered managers, often decisions were not shared but were autocratic. Teachers wanted a say, so unionizing was the response. This worked well for some time, increasing teacher participation in changes, better salaries and benefits, and more transparency over management operation. When many objectives were reached and cooperation was increased in school management, the union became visible only at hiring, salary, and grievances times. Apparently this was not enough and union reps and management moved to increase their power. TODAY THE ISSUES THEY CREATED HAVE EDUCATION IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN A FEVER PITCH. WILL PUBLIC EDUCATION SURVIVE?

Special education needs to change. So many children and teachers are not thriving, because of the view of how it should be and not what really worlds. Just winging it is causing burnout among students and educators.

Over the past several years I’ve thought deeply about the kind of schooling I’d like to have had, and based on my experience as a curious student who loved school (but it never rose to my expectations), I’ve developed My Ideal K-12 Public School Curriculum. It is IMO the only thing that separates We the People from our real freedoms, those that come from individuals able to think actively for themselves. Here’s what I propose, in brief: There should be three pillars of the curriculum, the teaching of which which should be instituted as early as possible in the education of every student: (1) Doing Philosophy, (2) Learning to Think Critically, and (3) Understanding How to Formulate Effective Questions. The second and third pillars are actually subsumed under the first, because “doing philosophy” gives everyone the ability to participate in democracy. When I say ”doing philosophy,” I don’t mean reading obscure texts and then being tested on what you’ve read. No, I mean the actual hands-and-minds-on DOING of philosophy by implementing a version of the Socratic method. Children learning to talk do it whenever they ask “Why?” Unfortunately (both for them and for society in general), their first teachers - in most cases, their parents - are ill-equipped to accommodate them, to sit down with them and engage in the exercise of curiosity. Instead, parents shove distractions at them - like television and video games - in order to avoid thinking with them. Or they use the time-honored answer, ”Because I said so,” or even worse, the abbreviated “Because.” There is no better way to stifle curiosity; those methods teach that curiosity is unwelcome, sometimes punished, sometimes simply avoided or ignored altogether. Listen to this 62-minute interview by Drs. Eric Thomas Weber and Anthony Cashio of Philosophy Bakes Bread with Dr. Jana Mohr Lone, Executive Director and co-founder of the Philosophy Learning and Teaching Organization (PLATO), which recently merged with the University of Washington Center of Philosophy for Children: www.philosophersinamerica.com/2017/04/12/017-ep13-philosophy-for-children/. You may be amazed; you will certainly be engaged. Discussions about the ideas about which children are already curious, as well as those that introduce new concepts for them to contemplate - all facilitated by instructors trained in the art of discourse - teach even the youngest minds how to think critically, pose relevant questions, obey social rules of politeness and respect, stimulate even the shyest or most insecure personalities to participate (if not actively, through vocalizing, then introspectively, through silent contemplation) and encourage the curiosity with which we’re all born. Active critical thinkers will be eager students rather than reluctant, often hostile ones. They will pepper their teachers with piercing questions and participate eagerly in the process of learning. They will develop into active readers and writers. School, for such individuals, will be FUN! But will their teachers be up to the task of fielding incessant questions? K-12 schoolteachers, typically the growing child’s second instructors after their parents, are underpaid, underfunded, over-stressed, and under-educated. They need silent classrooms so they can follow required lesson plans that ”teach to the test,” then administer tests that require rote memorization followed by dutiful regurgitation, often in the form of fill-in-the-blank and multiple-choice interrogation. Essay questions are reluctantly offered and just as reluctantly ”tackled” by students whose curiosity and love of learning has been trained out of them. And of couse, essays take so much more time to grade, time being just one of the many essentials that these teachers don’t have. I’ve only just touched the surface of the potentialities of the troika. I’ll sum it up by saying that school should be the most fun that a child can have, as well as being the most rewarding, invigorating experience for teachers. This curriculum will inject truly educated minds, prepared to reason, contemplate, and participate, into society. If you can find errors in my reasoning, please let me know, for how else can I learn? My goal is to have this kind of stimulating curriculum “how-to” implemented throughout our country and, eventually, the entire world.

The fact that you think a man that was the US secretary of education shows your ignorance. The education system is an utter FAILURE. We spend more money than any country in the world and producing lazy, incapable, arrogant adult children. The universities are a complete cess pool all the way down to elementary. Sorry if that hurts your feelings but someone needs to stop pandering to feelings and give children the education to be successful adults they deserve.

Yes, that does happen. I am not tall (I am considered short) at all but my son is 5'10". The same for cognitive ability. It's time to end public education and defund schools and public teachers unions. Parents and all property tax payers should immediately stop paying taxes. It's time for private schools to rise up and provide more efficient educations for all students. Parents should have the choice to pick schools based on quality and free choice. Public schools are racist and a failure. School administrators are the most racist people because the take away choice and freedom from minority parents. Government and unions are institutional racism at their core. Please copy this message and add it to further comments. We the people must rise up and take back the education of our children.

I like this video.....it shows you the total chaos that exists in teaching and teacher evaluation. In essence it shows that the state and states are unwilling to invest in education or have any idea what education is about. You do not set objectives in teaching or learning...see what Finland is doing and compare it to this...this is what chaos looks like.
@coryCuc
@coryCuc 2 года назад
It's not chaotic when you realize who designed these "evaluations." You have evaluations that are designed by people who've never set foot in a classroom. Add to that fact, you have evaluators that are doing the evaluations/observations who've never taught in the classroom. The quality of teaching is completely subjective during the evaluative process and can often come down to whether a principal/evaluator likes you or not. Getting rid of the Dept. of Education would be a big first step in fixing what is wrong with our current school system.

I enjoyed this discussion! One of the reasons of the grade inflation that I didn’t see brought up is the “No-Zero” grading policy that is being widely adopted across K-12 schools. School and district policies are REQUIRING teachers to assign grades of 50% or 59% for absolutely nothing. Therefore, students can do none of the work for the entire quarter and then do one or two assignments and all of a sudden get a D or C. This policy must be considered in the grade inflation conversation and future studies.

this was 7 years ago, before the full ramifications of socialistic fervor started to overtake our institutions. Now a young man can go to classes, and be told every day how bad he is. Just how horrible he is. The stifling of speech had not really transgressed to full on hatred like today, where an opposing voice is considered hate speech. No freedom of speech can occur on United States campuses today. The hatred of free speech might be worse than Nazi Germany pre-WW2. The diatribe is so overwhelming I don't see common scientific progress to be in any way what it was even 5 years ago. We will gradually loose all our stem courses to feminist logic and orthodoxy, and can see nothing good coming from this tribalism.
