Hey Nika It bothers me that with Flare of Denial you have to minimize your own board state. I'm thinking about cutting the flare from the main board and just putting two in the sideboard. I have the feeling that the meta is already creature-heavy and without flare in the main board you just have more cool merfolk at your disposal. Arent we just cleaner with FON and dismember in our hands? Is the Flare of Denial really a true addition to the main board or is everyone just forcing the card because it's new? Lovely greetings from Zürich, Switzerland
I play it to beat Control, Storm, and Nadu. Remember, you don't need to sacrifice a creature, you just do that when you desperately need to. Otherwise you can put it in the sideboard if you aren't finding it useful vs the decks you play against.
Loved the footage/advice/insights. However, I'm not sure if you're trying to sound condescending or sarcastic at the beginning claiming you play flawlessly. I was waiting for a punchline for a second, and then realized it wasn't coming. What I personally heard was a version of "I'm awesome at this, y'all are definitely not." I'm sure you play the deck marvelously and I certainly learned a lot and appreciated it, like I said, but it might turn people off from submitting their decks if you start with such an attitude, imo. Just feedback; that being said, I'd watch more of this content!
Flawlessly is a bit of an exaggeration, but in general I'm not making egregious errors or blunders. The point is that it's only through learning players we can see and learn from these mistakes; because it's seldom going to be in my gameplay. I'll try to find some better way to articulate it.
Bro, the guy has been playing merfolk forever! He is right and knows the decks weakness and strategies. Don't get all butt hurt for someone saying anything, it's not the way to live and think.
@@nikachuplaysmtg I'm a fan of your channel, but I'm gonna have to second @jasongray435 and gently suggest taking a seriously look at what you are saying to your viewers and thinking about how it might land from our perspective. I encourage you to watch the first 30 seconds of this video again. Saying "I basically play flawlessly... there are a lot of mistakes YOU guys are making that you don't know because I don't even explain this sort of thing" from the get go is not a reasonable thing to say to your viewers in a video where you're positioning yourself as someone worth listening to if you bother to think of us as actual humans for even half a second. I have watched enough of your content to know that it's not coming from a malicious place, but regardless it comes off as very "I am great, you are nothing" with no irony, wink, or any other kind of show of self-awareness, which makes it extremely difficult to see in any light other than arrogant. With that said, I hope you correct this in the future, and I enjoy your content a lot when you do not behave like this.
Cool. All you have to do is play through your replays and put it on RU-vid. Then let me know in a comment (just don't paste the link or it will get autoblocked by RU-vid)
Yes, though my analysis might be a bit off only because I'm not 100% sure what the cardpool is and therefore I may not know what each deck is capable or not capable of.
29:18 Just a note the Reflection of Kiki-Jiki (just like its namesake Goblin) can only copy nonlegendary creatures, so it cannot copy the Kroxa (or Legitimate Businessperson rather) here.
I feel like you should start using the soundbyte of George W Bush saying “I know that human being and fish can coexist peacefully” in your twitch streams
Legacy is such a brutal format sometimes. Legacy Eldrazi just looks disgusting. Been playing modern merfolk since 2015 and I can’t bring myself to play legacy because although merfolk is my favorite I know it’s not good in legacy haha
We'll be going back to Pioneer as Pioneer will be one of my 2 main formats (that and Modern). But the list hasn't changed too much because the meta hasn't changed at all.
I think mono green is a tough match up but I'm not sure about Damping Sphere. You slow down their best hands, but not their normal ones. You also take a full turn off turn 2 to play this, which on the draw I think you'll lose to random chunky creatures anyway.
Just getting into Modern merfolk because of Nikachu! I used to follow coffee and MTG awhile ago, but I can’t figure when/which channel to catch live streams anymore. Any help?
I know you talk about not always countering Medallion in Storm. But my heuristic with spirits has been to counter/exile that 100% of the time - especially on turn 2. I can see an argument for letting it resolve late game when opponent has a lot of mana. But it’s their “Aether Vial” on Turn 2, and always worth countering early IMO.
God merfolk seems so bad rn. You need to draw perfectly to beat most top decks. Nikachu draws really well usually, but the average dude... Vial is a dead top deck, dismember doesnt get walkers, u have no disenchant, no card advantage, creatures are puny when the lords get removed, and ovberall the deck is catastrophic when otd. Even with god tier draws, the energy tourney Nikachu won must have had some seriously "interesting" factors, curious what were his matchups, how badly opponents drew, and what misplays they made. Propos to Nikachu, most streamers only put on youtube there luck sack leagues, not the normal or unlucky ones
Hey I want to play Merfolks in Modern and Legacy. The big problem I have is with my land base. I personally have the experience that even in a mono colored deck - fetch lands are important and help me thin out my deck a lot. Made that experience with my goblin modern deck. Now I also think that cavern of souls is important and that Mutavault can win games. The thing is I fear that Mutavault could also loose me games if I play too many of them because it only produces colorless mana. I also feel like I should play sink into stupor and otawara but I should only play 20 Lands. I feel like it is hard to put all of this together. 😅
Just play my manabase :P Fetches just for the sake of thinning your deck isn't worth it. No competitive deck does this. The damage you take from the lands doesn't thin your deck enough to make a difference. You'll lose more games from damage than flooding out; and you'll flood out anyway even with fetchlands.
Sorry, you should replace Flare of Denial with Subtlety in this list. Force of Negation can hit Amulet, a timely removal spell, and Fable of the Mirror Breaker. But I'll almost never want to sacrifice a creature in play for Flare in the Energy match up.
Regarding the Phlage around the 30 min mark, you literally read out loud it would go to the graveyard if not played from exile, but ignored that for some reason.
A lot of decks interact with Vial (blinking or blow it up). Also it's important to interact with some decks on turn 1 of the game, like Boros Energy. Plus if Vial is Lorien Revealed then it is worth 3 cards in the lategame or can be a blue card to pitch to FoN/Subtlety.
Thanks! I guess I just find it worrisome so few merfolk players pack graveyard hate, because one of my friends always destroys me with his dredge deck hehe. But I guess that’s a pretty isolated case :)
Its a good card, but merfolk is not the shell for it. It belongs in CA decks, decks with fallaj archeo and similar creatures which are good sacrifices. So far only dredge has a good home for it, but in the future I m confident flare of D will find a home in a top deck
In this new format i m a strong believer of no vial ... U can't have any weak topdeck and i ve always lost because of them in my modern testing...at least after g 1 and sideboards in they always go out
