Sharing the natural beauty of the great outdoors one mile at a time!

“A journal of exploration should be a faithful delineation. Such a report one likes to travel by - truthful, plain, and unembellished; a simple narrative of facts observed. It gives evidence of a correct eye and sound judgment; of capacity for the work undertaken.” - Gustavus Cheyney Doane

Cool video as always! I was thinking about heading up to this area for a week later this month, and then doing a week up to Hole in the Wall etc. Might just do Hole in the Wall instead due to time limitations, but I'm thinking about cancelling the trip completely -- I heard Going to the Sun Road is already getting closures due to ice. What do you think about late September hikes up to Boulder pass, etc.? Not sure if I should risk it or just cancel and try for a better-timed permit next year.
@LayneComfort
@LayneComfort 4 дня назад
That late that high - risky. I wouldn’t want to base travel plans around doing that area in late September. My friend was guiding a trip up there during that winter storm (late August) and she got hit with a foot of snow

Hi Layne. Another excellent and relaxing video! One November, my wife and I (then living in Cumming,GA) drove up to drive the Blue Ridge Parkway north from Cherokee. However, it was closed in places, so we drove up to the Clingman's parking lot and walked up to the tower. There was a light coating of snow there, and we had it to ourselves! Thank you for your excellent and informational hiking videos. I look forward to many more. Also, I appreciate your using the term "blessing", as the Lord does bless when we are out in His beautiful Creation. On my channel, I have a series called "Walking in Creation" that shows what I've walked thus far on the AT. God Bless!!

Thank you so much for this video. So many hiking videos on RU-vid are about the hiker or hikers “conquering” the trail. In other words, the hike is a challenge to be overcome rather than an opportunity to experience and learn. The quote at the start of the video assured me that the purpose of your hike would be to experience rather than to conquer.
@LayneComfort
@LayneComfort 23 дня назад
Thanks for this comment Gregg. Every trek into the wilderness is an opportunity to learn. I think those of us who really spend time out deep know that there is no conquering these areas. They’ve been there long before I was born and will remain long after I’m gone.

Hi Layne. Very much enjoyed this view of the Fires Creek Rim area. I lived in Cumming, GA for 22 years, and always intended to go there. Appreciate your great video that allows me to see what it is like. Glad the thunderstorm and wind wasn't worse than expected. I've not hiked the Chunky Gal trail. Have you hiked it further past where you parked? I've seen its intersectdion with the AT, and (again) wished I'd have hiked it. You do a great job of narration and filming, and your showing the map at the end of each day is very impressive. Keep up the great work. God bless!

I've heard the trails are not clearly marked and would not make the hike alone knowing that wolves, cougars and bears are in the Idaho Mountains.
@LayneComfort
@LayneComfort Месяц назад
I found the navigation was no issue there on the main loop and the side trails I explored but YMMV. Wolves & black bear provide no real danger and lions little. The most dangerous part of this adventure was driving before & after which is statistically much more likely to cause catastrophe than spending time in the wilderness.

What a trip Layne. Finally recognized an area when you reached Goat Haunt (we visited by boat). What happened with the boaters and the bear? It's definitely interesting how low you are elevation-wise much of the time. The peaks are for the scramblers. Very cool seeing so much of Glacier that we didn't see as tourists. Have you considered adding chapters for long videos like this? Looking forward to the next one!

Hi Layne. Very much enjoyed this well-filmed and narrated video. Really like the way you show the route taken on the map each day. I plan to purchase maps #786 and #318 in order to adequately plan future NRA hikes. I've not been in this part of the NRA, so this was of interest for possible future hikes. RE: Iron Mountain Trail I'm very interested in this trail since it used to be the AT. Thinking of hiking it east from Damascus as far as it goes. Shoot, one more thing I meant ask; how was the overnight parking there? Kind of sketchy, or pretty legit? To hike the same trail, we have parked on the Wislon Creek side (south of the area you entered), near Mortimer. As we have only day hiked it, I wasn't sure about overnight parking at the trailhead parking areas. Was there a parking pass or?
