I loved my old A/D and now own the wonderful Wavestate. I’ve created some of the wildest performances on that thing. Totally unique. Id forgotten the SR. Must have been tricky to edit with that small screen. The A/D was perfect and a doddle to program once you got your head around the architecture. I’m loving editing the Wavestate via my iMac. Out of the big synth manufacturers I admire Korg for at least making the effort to release instruments that are a little bit eccentric. Can’t remember the last time I got excited by a Roland or Yamaha synth.

Maybe I am missing something very simple that is right in front of my eyes, but honestly I am a bit lost and could not find the answer in the manual so please bare with me as I'm an absolute beginner. In all of my other PCM drum machines, the samples can be navigated through and are ordered by instruments BD, SD, HH etc. so far so good with the R-8. now here's the rub. In all of my other drum machines the samples are also organized and can be navigated as whole kits that are pre mapped to the pads. What am I missing here? For example, if I want a kit from the 808 samples that are on the unit do I need to manually assign each sample to a pad? and then have only 5 combinations that can be saved? I'm pretty sure I'm missing something out here. I hope that the answer is simple and that browsing the samples as kits is easy, and that it is possible to navigate between those kits in one klick. Especially if I get the WAVEREX Rom expansion card for even more samples and going to load my own samples. Sorry if I am bothering you with something that is basic, I am sitting with the manual and still can't figure this out. Thanks a lot for reading, have a great day ❤
Thank really enjoyed the video and got me to pull out the SR as well but the battery is probably dead after all this time. Question can one change the battery without doing an initialization by having the SR powered on while changing the battery as I don't know how to do the downloading and sysex part you mentioned. PLEASE HELP🙂
Isnt this synth also a multi-timbral synth? I don't think that was mentioned anywhere in this video. The DX7 was not multi-timbral and that gives the YS200 a bit of and advantage over the DX imo.
I'm considering one of these rack systems. I already have a similar system holding both my acoustic and electronic drum kits up, and have never questioned the necessity. I'm not really questioning it for my synths either... well, I am a little bit. The cost, for all the components I need, is close to a DeepMind 12, so I'm just holding back pressing the button for now. It's Friday right now so I absolutely know come about 11pm, while I'm poring over the Jaspers secrion on the Thomann website, that button will get pressed.
Flashback to 1989: I purchased an YS100 together with a friend to start our synth pop star career. That never worked out. 🙂 Yet, I still have the synth here, it continues to work properly and besides the fact that it only has 4 operators, still produces cool sounds! Some of them I created myself back in the 90ies and still love to play.
Hello sampler friends㊗️ I recently purchased an emulator for my akai s900 from the exact buyer in the link. I installed everything correctly and when turning on the machine, everything booted and turned on correctly, the moment I press disk, the sampler mentions that, "There is no disk mounted". Before turning on the sampler with the floppy emulator, I made sure to have everything connected correctly and to turn on everything with the usb(that came with the floppy emulator)installed. What could be the issue? I'll be checking back to this daily for any updates or comments, thank you guys!

Man, i would love an r8m midi routing tutorial. Am really quite lost trying to figure out how to assign parameter controls and features to my midi controller/sequencer.
Great video! I have a WS-1...I loved seeing the "Scritti Funk" preset on the menu here. I will say there's something special about the sound of the Wavestation, for its day the sound is so huge and brilliant. Just listen to the preset "Transformer" and it's like you're at a theater when they show the THX logo!

Stupid question. Looking at the accessories, I see "monitor stands" that attach to the tubes. When they say "monitor", do they mean a speaker or a computer monitor? I have a couple yamaha monitor speakers that would be good to mount to this, assuming it is designed to hold the weight.
Biggest issue I have is if you reassign a pad to a different sound AFTER a pattern is recorded, you would need to "find" the original sound again to make any edits to it. Any way around this?
Great review! One correction though, these stands were originally engineered and manufactured in America not Germany under the name Ultimate Support Stands in the 1980's. After the patents ran out Jasper and On Stage began making them although the On Stage are not the same quality as the Ultimate or Jasper. I still have my 80's Ultimate stand.
This is great content, thanks for putting this out there! Not sure you're still checking these comments but wondering if it's possible to save sounds from the ROM cards into the user 'copy' slots? Or just versions of the internal sounds?
I have this exact synth (rack mount Wavestation SR) that I bought new about 30 years ago. It hasn't been touched in many years, but I want to make use of it soon ... so I'm sure the battery in it is dead as a doornail. Will it still play, but just not save user presets? Or will it not play at all without a new battery (which thankfully are readily available)? Thanks for this awesome video!
Nice videos, I had a comment on your other video, it looks like this can do what I'm thinking. I have the normal Roland R8 and I'm wanting to know if there is a way to scroll through different kits while the same pattern is playing. I can do this on my BOSS DR202 and it is nice and fast for finding a kit sound that I like. I'm a newb and just got the R8 but I can only figure out how to assign individual pads at a time, are there no "kits" here? Thanks!
Is it possible to switch between "kits" with the same beat playing? Or do you have to assign every pad individually with the sound you want? For reference on my BOSS DR202, it is possible to have a "pattern" playing while scrolling through "kits" to find one I like
You mentioned you were able to autoload the latest OS 4? How exactly did you do this? I have OS 4 on my HXC Gotek, but it never autoloads. I have to manually select it from the disk menu. It only takes a few seconds, but from reading around, others are not able to get it to auto boot either? Can you please share how?
I had the R5, the cut down version of the R8 for years. Absolutely loved it, and even to this day I think the cymbal samples are better sounding than modern samples. I sometimes mix a VST drum kit with R8 cymbal samples, and it sounds great! A couple of the kick, snare and tom samples are still usable too, although many are terribly dated, of course!
@@peterfuzz3887 I seem to remember that it did, I think you use the data slider to control it. The R5 was great... except no soundcards/new samples and only 4 outputs. The little screen is actually cleverly used, so not a major drawback IMO
Is there anyway you could do a tutorial for this setup using just the MOTU? It's the same model I have and I am really struggling with how to connect my 4 MIDI devices to it and also have it get through to my DAW (Ableton)
