Thanks for posting this documentary, I had high hopes at the start of the video that the Nobska was still being restored, but was saddened when I discovered that it had been scrapped in 2006. My first trip to the islands was aboard the Nobska in 1964, my mom would have gotten sea-sick, so it was just my dad and I. We took the car, an Oldsmobile on the boat. I think he was a little apprehensive about driving the car onto the boat, making that turn on the boat and then backing into position so he asked me to do it, I was 17 years old at the time and had no fear of driving so I was thrilled to be able to do it. Looks like all the present boats are high efficiency people movers and that's okay, but I do long for the days when half the fun was in the journey.
I remember going over to Vineyard Haven to visit my cousin on the Nobska in the summers in the '60's. During the winter she was layed up in Woods Hole. Even though she wasn't as trimmed out as in past years it was still a thrill. All of us younger kids would head up to the after deck before she approached West Chop to get a cooling spray as the whistle announced the pending arrival in Vineyard Haven. In later years, it was sad to see her towed off to Baltimore and then Fall River and finally to Charlestown Shipyard, where I last saw her...that was sad, but at least I got to tell a visiting tourist family about her history. The saddest was when I read that she was being scrapped. The last of the "White Line", and last of the true steam ships to the islands. Glad I got a chance to experience sailing on her, and I'll always remember that whistle. . .
@@FieldsofVision1 THANKS! I was on this ship! And the Martha's vineyard! When I was about 12/13 & 14 I used to watch my grandparents come into Bridgeport from Port Jefferson on this ferry & the Martha as well. As a kid I noticed that there was two sister ships even as a kid I remember one had Yellow in the pattern and the other (I think Martha) had red in the pattern. Noble attempt to preserve this ship, too bad something of such beauty had to be scrapped.
I remember watching the E. C. A. C. game of the week on the local television stations in the New York -New Jersey area. I remember my Saturday afternoons watching eastern powers Syracuse., Providence Manhattan, St. Johns and Rutgers and other teams. I was proud of them all and when Providence almost pulled off the upset of the ages by getting to the final 4and would have faced UCLA with Bill Walton. Oh what it could have been
My parents used to rent a stateroom on board the Nobska for the trip to Nantucket from Woods Hole from 1969 until 1973 when the Nobska was taken out of service.
This was a very interesting, informative and well made mini-documentary. I enjoyed it very much and felt a part of the team on the edge of my seat and holding my breath as the painting came down. What amazing progress has been made in the conservation and care of the world's artistic treasures. Kudos to all those involved in this project. Thank you!
no disrespect AT ALL to otis thorpe but he didn't equal star clyde drexler and the rockets wouldn't have won those titles without legend hakeem olajuwon
4:33 These are by the painter Sargent. There are no videos on RU-vid about the paintings by Sargent in the Boston Public Library, please can someone make one
I am currently reading quite a good biography of Sargent titled "The Grand Affair" by Paul Fisher where the Sargent murals are talked about extensively. I look forward to seeing them myself.
I came to RU-vid for the same reason, as we are studying Sargent in homeschool for our fine art studies and read about his mural Triumph of Religion in the Boston Public Library.
Me neither bro like what. If u don’t do rowing ur not gonna watch a whole separate event for it. However, he might be talking abt people in Boston in which case obvi HOCR would come up first
Was scrolling through RU-vid and came across this video. Brings back fond memories of my teen years in the bay area listening to Bill King on the radio announcing the Golden State Warriors. Bill King referred to Joe Hassett as the Mad Bomber, the dude can flat out shoot. Way ahead of his time.
Loved this. I rowed on the GWU crew team before the Head of the Charles started in 1965. The Potomac was never as busy as the Charles is now, but I immediately identify with the feelings and memories expressed by the rowers in this beautifully produced video. Living near Boston now we will certainly be in Cambridge for the 56 year of the event.
MY LATE ENGLISH TEACHER TOLD ME BEFORE HE DIED IN1991 THAT TOM LARSON REALLY HATED THE BOSTON BRUINS AND SECRETLY WANTED THEM TO LOSE. I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE ELSE HEARD THIS STATEMENT AS WELL?
Fred Cusick and Johnny Peirson, bought enthusiasm, knowledge and class to The B's telecast. Tom brought all that PLUS he brought the "cool" too, to us young dudes growing up during that time. I'll never forget these men or those teams. In a life littered with too many falls They picked me up many times and still do.
