The steamboat Nobska ran to the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket from 1925-1973. After it was taken out of service, there were several attempts to restore the Nobska. This documentary is both a historical look at the beloved ship, and a look at the final attempt to bring back the Nobska before it was scrapped in 2006.

Thanks for posting this documentary, I had high hopes at the start of the video that the Nobska was still being restored, but was saddened when I discovered that it had been scrapped in 2006. My first trip to the islands was aboard the Nobska in 1964, my mom would have gotten sea-sick, so it was just my dad and I. We took the car, an Oldsmobile on the boat. I think he was a little apprehensive about driving the car onto the boat, making that turn on the boat and then backing into position so he asked me to do it, I was 17 years old at the time and had no fear of driving so I was thrilled to be able to do it. Looks like all the present boats are high efficiency people movers and that's okay, but I do long for the days when half the fun was in the journey.

Thanks for posting. I have lived on the Cape since 1958 and remember these boats and others that ran out of Hyannis

I remember going over to Vineyard Haven to visit my cousin on the Nobska in the summers in the '60's. During the winter she was layed up in Woods Hole. Even though she wasn't as trimmed out as in past years it was still a thrill. All of us younger kids would head up to the after deck before she approached West Chop to get a cooling spray as the whistle announced the pending arrival in Vineyard Haven. In later years, it was sad to see her towed off to Baltimore and then Fall River and finally to Charlestown Shipyard, where I last saw her...that was sad, but at least I got to tell a visiting tourist family about her history. The saddest was when I read that she was being scrapped. The last of the "White Line", and last of the true steam ships to the islands. Glad I got a chance to experience sailing on her, and I'll always remember that whistle. . .

My parents used to rent a stateroom on board the Nobska for the trip to Nantucket from Woods Hole from 1969 until 1973 when the Nobska was taken out of service.

@@FieldsofVision1 THANKS! I was on this ship! And the Martha's vineyard! When I was about 12/13 & 14 I used to watch my grandparents come into Bridgeport from Port Jefferson on this ferry & the Martha as well. As a kid I noticed that there was two sister ships even as a kid I remember one had Yellow in the pattern and the other (I think Martha) had red in the pattern. Noble attempt to preserve this ship, too bad something of such beauty had to be scrapped.
