Why do the smallest screwdrivers become the shortest screwdrivers? ….. (I’ll bet you know)

brilliant video and work, you said when making the wheel you did not have a dividing head you have the makings on your lathe and with a dremel and cutting wheel you could improvise
@csspinner
@csspinner 20 часов назад
Thought about that, but without an accurate fixture I would have no way to secure the dremel and have it slide back and forth. I since acquired a wheel engine I’m in the process of restoring and it has support for many more than the small dividing head the lathe comes with. So, I won’t have this issue in the future

My Father had several Fuse movements i his collection of movements, all made before 1750-1800. None of them had chains but they were stained red and blue so that they could be put in dual crystal cases so you could see the back of the movements. My dad said they were made for the China trade but when they lost their chains, their gold cases were pulled and scrapped, the movements left for dead. I still have them in his collection of watches.

This is like watching the moment we lose beautifully engineered and designed car engines, to moving to electric! Yes its more efficient, but just the amazing mechanics are lost forever! This watch looks like the crossover point, like a Hybrid car!

I genuinely thought it has some kind of clever wind indicator as in air movement, for some reason I didn't immediately realize it was indicating the power reserve like on many watches. It's fun when different words are written the exact same way 😅

A timepiece is a very precision item, no matter when it was made. Each part has to move another part at the exact time to avoid creating something that doesn’t tell you the time at all. I’m just looking at this timepiece with its unaligned screw slots and woeful number engravings, and wondering what skill was required to make this.

Hello, thank you for such a detailed service video. I have this watch ,can you please tell me the size of the back case warshal and crown seal size .it has problems with water proofing? Secondly my watch repair person has many times set its time on this watch time grapher machine but some how it can’t be set to zero difference. Mostly +55 or - 35 . Great deviation on minor adjustment with screw adjuster. Any advice ? . Thank you.

They are amazing, beautiful, yet also quite "crude" to our "Machine Tool Perfection" eyes. All the scratches and crooked angles just seem out of place in a watch.

Hey, that's MY watch! Or nearly so ... I have an 1857 P. S. Bartlett made in 1876, going by its movement serial number, in a coin-silver hunter case. I had a local watchmaker overhaul it and bring it to running condition year before last, only to break the spring through ham-handed over-winding, so now he has it again and is hunting for another suitable spring.

Wow! Awesome job. How much does a restoration normally cost? For example a 1979 omega seamaster that has some scratches and light rust and still works.

That ratchet wheel looks like it was pinned to that shaft and the pin is missing. The shaft has a hole through it, and the ratchet wheel has a witness mark like there was a pin there for a century and it was lost during a service. Probably when those other screws were lost. Unless my eyes are playing tricks on me and there is no hole in the shaft.
@csspinner

I thought exactly the same thing! Except there wasn’t a hole through the shaft.

Depends on the gold content, but I would guess shy of $1000 considering it’s keeping railroad time and a high grade

I have an 1836Liverpool movement in a Scottish case (Edinbourgh) Apart from a few more Jewels, its the same as yours. Best I could get was 4 to 5 ims a day, but I reasoned that was all that was needed for the average Farmer, as as I only use it on "special" occasions when it only has to work for a few hours, no one notices the error!! I had the same thoughts as you when first getting it to run--would the maker ever have thought it would still be going after more than 100 years , and would it still be around in another 100 years.? Nicely presented--thank you.

What a gorgeous piece of equipment, and it does really fine work! Of course the user has a lot to do with it too. 👍 I can't even begin to describe how much of a tool nut I am.. I've had so many varied careers, and hobbies, I have way too many tools.. now I'm into watches, I'm becoming the same way.. my kids are going to put me away in my older age now, in order to clean all my stuff up..😂

This is phenomenal. Unsolicited feedback: I (wimpy) was fully unprepared for the sandpaper against metal with my headphones on. Like visiting the dentist it was. I don't think I will ever recover. I also enjoy comparison shots of parts pre-cleaned and post-cleaned. This is extra work, and by no means does this video need it. But it could be cool. If you feel like it. Thank you for your meticulous and beautiful work.

Is something like this considered "priceless" at this point? Reason I suppose this is 1) they must be quite rare and 2) impossible to replace
@csspinner
@csspinner 3 дня назад
I think there are many examples of these still out there. Rare to find in this condition, even rarer to see them running and keeping time.

@@csspinner I guess I meant one from the 1700's. For some reason I assumed one from that long ago and in that shape would be rare

can the oil actually damage the movement? or does it act as a perserver
@csspinner
@csspinner 3 дня назад
If anything the oil helps preserve the components. However, this owner got lucky it didn’t get under the various finish layers of the dial. It could have ruined it

A cheat I use is to thin the appropriate grease with toluene into a thin liquid which I apply almost as a penetrant. After application, the toluene slowly evaporates leaving the grease in its original viscosity. It's a way of getting grease (in this case) into those barrel springs or any other tight space without having to unwind them completely. Of course, you need to pre test the grease to make sure it's otherwise unaffected by the solvent.
