as a long-term scuba diver, one of the best things we used to keep our mask and camera from fogging up is a light coating of Johnson baby shampoo, a drop on your finger will be more than enough
@@derekraines8175 Thanks for the recommendation. I tried most everything, including anti fog stuff for scuba diving. The problem is a fault in GoPros design. Not sure they’ve ever fixed it. GoPro lenses aren’t nitrogen or argon purged, so when the electrons heat up, then the lens ks rapidly cooled by immersion = instant fog.
This was me yesterday near Land's End UK! Even the yellow kayak, but had my helmet on. Glad it's not just me! The comment that says it's the suck first that sets up trouble is 100% accurate! Edit: I thought it was good to practice my wet exit 😁.
Great info! Well done. I’m digging your PFD. Can I ask you why this vest, PFD, plus what size is it and what is your size; height, weight, chest size? I’m 5’10” 150 pounds, male, with a 42 inch chest. Kokatat says Medium which I think is your size here. Do you take into account extra clothing when buying these? I was the large too big for you? I bought this strobe! It’s kickass!
Glad you liked the video and bought the strobe. I still haven’t found a better one, and it’s still on my vest 100’s of trips and exposures to salt water later. I’m 5’9”, about 175lbs, 44” chest. The vest is a Kokatat Outfit, size large. Not buying advice, but I tend to err on the side of larger pfd’s, that way i can fit a drysuit under it.
That is extremely kind of you. My GoPro is… terrible. I tried filling a dive housing with argon but it didn’t work. Missed several video opportunities as a result. Let’s hope Santa brings a new one. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a happy New Year, full of paddling!
One thought is that when the boat is inverted it's difficult to see exactly where the bow is located. This would suggest that it might be useful to add contrast colour feature line at the bow's leading edge (nail varnish for a cheap fix;-). While accidents happen, making sure that all floating obstacles are visible is a fairly easy win.
We rented a house a couple of times on the water right around the corner from there! Right next to the ferry in Lewes. Had I have known about these sort of things going on there...I'll have to be more diligent.
The only time I’ve been wet inside a tent was when borrowing an MSR. Hmmmm. I’m impressed by the challenge you took on alone. That does not look like a friendly area, especially in the season you chose.
Would it have to be a sea kayak,or would a ten foot recreational kayak go there?just starting and don't know much yet....it seems like the difference is length?
It would have to be a sea kayak, and the paddler will need appropriate saftey equipment (dressed for ~40° water) and skill to paddle in waves, current, wind and LARGE ship traffic. The whales are often 3-5 miles offshore. That time of year conditions can be brutal and quickly change. Landing on the beach anywhere near my point of departure and “on schedule” is often a exercise in determination. I’m making some new videos regarding kayak design and features, I’ll try to address why it must be a sea kayak in those videos. In the meantime while you’re deciding what sea kayak to buy and working on those skills, there are a couple venues for whale watching in Virginia Beach. I recommend taking a VB Aquarium whale watching tour. Good people and your money goes toward a good cause. Maybe I’ll see you out there!
Really enjoy your videos. I wondered about the carbon greenland paddle and stowage system you have as a spare - where are they from? I hope to explore the scottish islands this year and try to paddle a bit in the winter for fitness.
Hey James, really glad you enjoy the videos - feedback is encouraging. I am going to try to make more content but my GoPro is out of commission. I tried a repair but it failed. My Greenland paddle is a Gearlab Akiak. It’s a great paddle and I credit it with saving my shoulder and keeping me paddling when I couldn’t have with a Euro blade. My paddle holder is from North Water, model is called Paddle Britches. I don’t always use them but they are nice.
Great action! I paddle just south of you in Raleigh and the NC coastal areas. I’m sure we might know some of the same people. What kayak are you paddling?
Good to meet you! In this video I’m in a P&H Delphin 155. It’s my rough water boat for near rocks (and other kayaks 😬). I’m guessing you know a certain kayaker from Farmville NC? I don’t suppose you’ll be going to the Kiptopeke kayak symposium?
@@offshorekayak I know the kayaker from Farmville, he comes often to the winter rolling sessions at the Raleigh pool. I'm not signed up for Kiptopeke this year.
Long channel, plenty of time to turn into something else. My first intro to big wave rock kayaking was at Allihies with friends on a building project. We paddled out through the channels, when the sea suddenly dropped 6 feet and the channel became raging rapids down to a dunking at the bottom. Never forget that moment. It’s surprising how survivable it can be though.
@@offshorekayak We go out on 15 foot swells in otherwise calm conditions, harbour mouth is messy but rarely capsize. We do a rescue/re float procedure is someone goes over. On the opposite coast to you.
@@offshorekayak opposite Atlantic actually, we get up to 50 feet, though not up to St Nazaire marine canyon standard. Kayaking in 100 footers would be a worthy pilgrimage, although apparently an inflatable life jacket is required to survive a mishap.
I use a hair dryer before going to sea. I heat up the gopro, insert the battery and close the battery compartment. But if you have to change the battery, the condensate, of course, returns.
🥳🥳🥳10K VIEWS! 🥳🥳🥳 Thats amazing. Never thought when I started posting stuff to this channel that I would get picked up by the algorithm and get this number of views. To everyone that has liked and subscribed, I’m am honored and grateful. I will try to post new content soon and keep up the entertainment.
Wear a helmet it's really not that bad. I understand that nothing went wrong here, but something definitely could have and the point of helmets is to protect you if something does go wrong
I literally think you were the only person. 😂 I’ve gotten many complaints about it. I just wanted to have some fun with the video and make it a little more interesting. Thanks for the comment and input!
