So perfect. It's a delicate song, full of emotion and restraint, the ironies of love, timing, and relationships, of missed moments, regrets and a wisp of hope. She moved me greatly. Who can't relate to the song when expressed like this. (I also loved Daniel Boaventura's version, also from the musical theater world).
Hear me now, oh, thou bleak and unbearable world Thou art base and debauched as can be And a knight with his banners all bravely unfurled Now hurls down his gauntlet to thee! I am I, Don Quixote The Lord of La Mancha My destiny calls and I go And the wild winds of fortune Shall carry me onward Oh, whithersoever they blow Whithersoever they blow Onward to glory I go! Hear me, heathens and wizards And serpents of sin! All your dastardly doings are past, For a holy endeavor is now to begin And virtue shall triumph at last! I am I, Don Quixote, The Lord of la Mancha, My destiny calls and I go, And the wild winds of fortune Will carry me onward, Oh whithersoever they blow! Whithersoever they blow, Onward to glory I go!
Now that is how to sing "Send in the Clowns". Right from the first line you get goosebumps and start welling up. Hannah has that ineffable quality that even many great actors never achieve: she doesn't just sing or speak her lines with skill, she expresses the emotional meaning behind them so they take a shortcut straight into your soul. One of the greatest ever.
I feel like those of us in the US who've only learned of Hannah Waddingham from Ted Lasso have been cheated all these previous years! What an amazingly talented and beautiful person she is!
