West End leading ladies celebrate the songs of Stephen Sondheim in SONDHEIM: WOMEN. KiwiFruits Productions St James Theatre 2013 Hannah Waddingham Band: Terence Penk, Maria Rodriguez, Janette Williams, Mike Higgins
I feel like those of us in the US who've only learned of Hannah Waddingham from Ted Lasso have been cheated all these previous years! What an amazingly talented and beautiful person she is!
Now that is how to sing "Send in the Clowns". Right from the first line you get goosebumps and start welling up. Hannah has that ineffable quality that even many great actors never achieve: she doesn't just sing or speak her lines with skill, she expresses the emotional meaning behind them so they take a shortcut straight into your soul. One of the greatest ever.
Just done a RU-vid stalking of Hannah from Ted Lasso cast at the Emmys, via Into The Woods, to this exquisitely judged performance. She is phenomenal, so grateful to catch up with her.
So perfect. It's a delicate song, full of emotion and restraint, the ironies of love, timing, and relationships, of missed moments, regrets and a wisp of hope. She moved me greatly. Who can't relate to the song when expressed like this. (I also loved Daniel Boaventura's version, also from the musical theater world).
Wow, she doesn't so much sing this as act it. We know she has the pipes to do it. She could belt it out, bleed it of angst. But this performance is far more attuned to the character in the musical. Every line and gesture is heartbreak.
this song should always be done by a great actress rather than a great singer, its all in the acting. the best performances are done by Judy Dench, Glynis Johns, Glenn Close, not the best singers
Yeah, the song wasn't originally written for a powerful voice. This is exactly how it should be performed (especially in the musical). Don't get me wrong, I love a good belted song, but the emotion is just so strong in this version.
