Great analysis. But something i noticed. You called Keith "Weak minded" for listening to his boy. But all 3 of Shante' s friends listen to her every word as some sort of "Love Guru".They even applied those "rules" and one got engaged (on day 7 if i remember correctly) yet you never once called or considered any none of them "weak minded". Kind of like you're implying. If a guy listens to his friends bad advice he's "Weak" minded. But if multiple females listen to their friends bad advice; it's completely ignored and over looked.
Thanks for your analysis. I never thought about this film any deeper when i was younger. The sisters were too reliant on eva and subconsciously picked this cycle of men. I have in laws that have done the same thing and do not see the pattern... Love how the white guy sums up the boundary theme with a firm, 'No' to the horse question. Didnt waste energy explaining with,'Well honey we live in an apartment' or 'I don't think its a good idea honey'. Just 'No'.
Came back to this again to say Gavin wasn’t wrong for going after the book sale money 😂😂 if she didn’t make that book until after we were married he needs that half. That’s like if I start a business today while I’m married to my wife. If we divorce she automatically getting half of the business no questions asked. Is it an asshole move? Sure. But is he wrong for doing so? Not at all
As I get older, get older dealing with relationship friendships and everything heartbreak kids. I realize Brandy wasn’t wrong. Martin told gaslighted her. He chased her to. He got her and he got her. He threw her to the side. You just can’t play with nobody feelings like that.
Something I want discussed is that just because the relationship isn't as horrible as it can be or you aren't being abused doesn't mean you gave to stay. Things could be going great but if you don't want to be in the relationship anymore you can leave. Even if they are still in love you can try to work it out but if ultimately if you don't want to continue the relationship then go.
I don't know why, but do y'all think Nino is supposed to represent the American government and the Carter residents/surrounding area represent the black community as a whole? - Kicking the Carter residents out of their apartments for his headquarters, mirroring the displacement of black families during urban renewal projects that often led to gentrification. - Introducing a cheaper, more addictive drug into into the already drug system he had (many had no choice but to take it), mirroring the 80s/90s crack epidemic. - Giving money and food to the displaced Carter residents as if it wasn't his fault they're like that, mirroring welfare programs like ebt and section 8 in attempt to seen as helping, but the root causes of the problems (often linked to systemic issues) are not addressed, leading to a cycle of dependency and control.... lol, i may just be overthinking but yeah. forgot to add, great analysis/commentary btw! very much spoke on/pointed out several things that i questioned/noted as well!
One of my FAVORITE memories was being a Memphian seeing this movie in theaters when it came out at a theater in Nashville. It was sooooo OBVIOUS who was from Memphis when the beat for Whoop dat Trick dropped! EVERY one of us stood up!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I felt so loved 😂😂😂
Hustle & Flow was one of my go to movies for a while and I remember around the same year that this came out 2005 there was also a documentary about a Harlem organization called GEMS and it was created to help girls get out of prostitution and one of the founders gave a speech saying how one of the biggest movies of the year was Hustle & Flow and the hit song it's Hard Out Here for a pimp she said no it's Hard Out Here for a pro or something like that and it made me look at this movie differently
That contract was a horrible idea that doesn’t teach accountability. Treys mom was adultifying him to avoid the responsibility of teaching her son how to behave in school. She sent him with his dad because she didn’t want to deal with him lmao.
