Feels like a ghost story & campfire song mixed beautifully "when I'm gone, they'll just find another monster. They have to. It's the only way they can justify their wages" -Dutch vanderlin rdr 1
God I love these guys. My dad loved Western music. I had no idea what he was talking about until the 1987 Strawberry Music festival where I discovered this troop. Some years later I took dad to the Kern County Fair to see the Riders' early show. We sat front row-center and dad loved it. Got to introduce him to Ranger Doug and told him we loved his song "Here Comes the Santa Fe" since dad was a retired Santa Fe conductor and I was a Santa Fe locomotive engineer. Doug and all the guys are just the best people as well as fantastic musicians. I took dad home and went back for their late show. It was clear that the Riders had eaten and had maybe a frosty beverage or two as that show was pretty loose and soooooo funny. They had a contest, the winner of which came up with the stupidest question. I won that 8-track Riders in the Sky tape and still proudly show it at home. I took it on myself to learn a couple of the old cowboy songs they play and I'm a better man for it.
Oh, the lessons this suburb-raised kid would never have learned if it hadn't been for Baxter Black! I was privileged to see him perform live many times and will miss him. R.I.P., Bax.
Play it California too. I've Coulterville and Hornitos and Joaquin is often mentioned from the robbery on the road to his tunnel to the bar in Hornitos.
Your awesome Dave Stamey, I remember when I was like 6, and I sang you a song, you said that you would write me a song, Im not sure if you ever did, but, I've memorized just about all the songs I've heard of your's, keep up the good work!
they were the main event my parents and I would see at the Saline County (Kansas) River Festival in the 80s. one of my favorite memories every year they were there. can't even count how many times I met them. some of the most down to earth, personable, friendly, funny, and just plain good guys. it was just Ranger Doug, Woody Paul, and Too Slim (my favorite!) at the time. so much fun watching them perform.
