Since you sre using a 3-prong dryer cord/receptacle the ground from the generator via the generator cord is not connected to anything, right ? Is this a problem ? Do you have to make sure the generator is properly grounded since it is (I guess) not connected to the house panel ground ? Would you leave the generator neutral bonded with ground in this case, maybe the generator ground is then connected to the ground at the panel via the neutral? Or, should you put a jumper between the neutral and ground promgs as you are wiring it? What is the dryer grounded to when using the dryer as normal with the house power? The neutral?
Hey Guy, you're fired. Took too long to do the job. But on the flip side. You did show us what can go wrong in making a back feed cord. Thank you for a complete detailed visual instructions.
You should just have X W and Y then. Ignore the fact he has a ground. You just don’t have one. Hopefully you’re already good by now, but that’s your answer. Cheers
Want to hear something strange about this, even though it's deemed illegal in most states, a Federal Government Agency, has instructed myself and my business to backfeed electricity to test a house's utilities. But they won't pay me extra to install a generator back up breaker box, but just to feed through the electric range or dryer.
I Googled "generator backfeed suicide cord lineman" and cannot find a single news item of any lineman ever being hurt or killed by this. I think everyone knows to have the main off.
using a suicide cord voids your house insurance against fire. you will not be covered and the fire inspector will definitely find that you used a suicide cord. you will be personally held responsible if your fire burns down your neighbours' houses or causes any one else damage. if someone dies in the resulting fire you will be charged with manslaughter so...DON'T DO IT.
This guy does not know how to put a male plug on a cord. He did not need to strip an inch of insulation off the wire. You only need to take about a quarter of an inch off the installation over the wire. So I suggest that you stop watching this video. All much better video that's much safer. Clearly I see this guy does not know how to properly install male plug on a cord. This video is very unsafe don't do it.
You did a great job in installing. However, you didn't show us the most important thing. That was to adjust that "bolt and nut" at the top of the Regulator. Whenever you use Natural Gas versus Propane Gas. Because their pressure's has to be JUST right. And you can hear that when the engine is on. And.. That is VERY important to get the best "efficiency" out of each "gas". Worse: if the adjustable bolt and nut is near working; you might not even start the engine at all. Oh indeed. For what it's worth, but NO disrespect toward you atoll kind Sir.
If someone wants it to do it even safer... 1. Install outside generator outlet on the side of the house. 2. Install a pullout disconnect inside of the house close to the dishwasher outlet. 3. Run a cable directly from the dishwasher outlet to the pullout disconnect (without the dishwasher plug) When running a generator, simply unplug a dishwasher and plug the pullout disconnect. Hook up a generator to the outside wall plug... and run.
Thank you for going between the fuel sources. Everyone else seems to be excited about their shiny new toy called propane or natural gas, that they don't understand there are people out there who still may need to rely on gas and curious as to how it all works together. Again I say thank you!
I'm wanting to make a cord like this and use the transfer switch 120V 30 amp L5-30R twist lock coming out of my generator and go to a 10-50R so I can plug it into my dryer receptacle and only have 120Volts running to my 120 volt breakers in the house.Trying to figure how to wire the L5-30P to the 10-50P?Both only have 3 terminals but the 10-50P has two hot legs to where the L5-30 only has 1 hot leg?
When you straightened the vertical you loosed that joint. Also, when using nipples, add the next fitting and tighten all at once. Learned that from and old plumber. Also human smell and listening is Not and adequate leak check.
So my Generator like most of them out there has 240 voltage out put and my TV and other devise are 110 voltage and I saw a cord for that is that means its only for A/C anf cookstove unites?
Not an electrician but unless you live rural if you were to have the main breaker on and backfeed the grid wont your generator overload an shut off because it will attempt to power the whole neighborhood. Please let me know.
This video & all the Darwin Award winners here who support this stuff give me hope for humanity. Mother Nature knows what she's doing -- the gene pool actually does get cleaned up eventually. I suppose the dead linemen & first responders are just necessary collateral damage for the overall good... Keep up the good work, you dimwits! You're making it a better world for the rest of us with your (eventual) absence. Just remember -- do this kind of stuff BEFORE you have kids or else you've defeated the whole purpose!
I notice he does not show that rinky-dink dryer out hanging, I doubt he fixed that, it was and probably is still a code violation as the code states the box, fitting "shall be securely attatched to building" Is the Gen bonded to the neutral? Some weird things can happen with unbalanced loads. say 5 amps on red and 15 amps on black will have 10 amps on the neutral.
A fire is not likely but not impossible either. Most dryer ckt are 230-240 volts at 25 to 30 amps meaning the overcurrent protection is not rated over 25 to 30 amps. the gen's breaker will trip around 30 or a few amps above.and the dryer's breaker will trip also.It is when you try to pull around 35 to 40 amps if the ckt is protected by fuses, pulling 30 amps after a few hrs it will open as they are not made to carry the rated current for more than a few hours.
Any one who would uses a pipe wrench or channel lock pliers on brass fittings is not worth watching , & I am sure they send adequate instruction in the kit
I think I have commented before, but THANK YOU for your vid! It is good information for helping us country folks with good sense and trying to look out for our families!
The video did not illustrate or demonstrate the intended goal - back feed a house with a power cord via an outlet. The video only demonstrate how a power cord was made with two inlets on both ends.
No offense sir, but the amount of times you made simple mistakes in assembling a cord. I'm not going to risk my home and my families livelihood on this experiment. Thank you for this video
This is extremely dangerous and illegal in many states. Even turning off your mains breaker could still cause a back feed issue if any of the house wiring is done incorrectly. Power could possibly feed down your neutral line and out to the pole. Think long and hard about this before doing it. Well worth the investment to purchase transfer switch set and do it correctly.
I'm just about to get a roll of heavy gauge cable (4 prong) an adapter,a couple of connector ends, and hook up the cable to my generator to dryer outlet and see how things go..but i'm also hooking up an earth ground copper to generator lug. Mine has a bonded neutral but I hear plugging into the house gives a bonded neutral to ground anyways. Great video and leaving the whole start over part in was classic and honest. Make sure the Main is shut off with all fuses/circuits before plugging in,then turn on dryer circuit switch to activate. One circuit at a time after that, and don't overload your generator limits. Stay powered up!
