I dont fish stripers but if I can catch 5 lb rainbow trout on size 12s no problem then I dont get why you guys cant land 30lb stripers on 2.o. Just use a rod with some flex, a leader with some stretch and a smooth drag set right and the fish wont be able to rip the hook out. Are you fishing in snaggy locations where the fish have to be stopped dead without running. Or is there a need to hustle them in fast without building up lactic acid? Cheers.
I can't tell you how many countless hours I've casted into what seems like a fishless void of an ocean. Finding your own spots and timing is the most rewarding thing in the game. To me, catching 20+ fish live lining bunker in a boat or mindlessly trolling is way less fun that beating the odds and catching 1 or 2 fish from shore. To me, spending thousands of dollars in gas, gear, and electronics to catch stripers is just kinda pointless. It's like buying an expensive bass boat to catch sunfish
TA clips are great, the 1 downside is watching guys constantly changing lures , make 4 casts change the plug. People don't fish a plug long enough to learn what it does. Most guys would fish a plug longer if they tied direct. With that said I don't tie direct fresh or saltwater, but on the rare occasion, I will do a loop and not go to the split ring.
Great catch, but the one thing I hate about snobby people is not telling the location like the water is yours?? If I’m fishing and it’s hitting for me I’ll let anyone know because who am I to not tell people or other fisher men of good spot? Ppl like y’all are sickening
Do you guys tend to just use tail flags (bucktail) or are you guys using mostly weighted tail flags to replace the second hook and what would be the ideal single hook setup for an SP minnow and SS needlefish?
It absolutely has to do with water temperature brother..about 6 years ago a fisherman caught a 40 pound cobia in narragansett bay..nick name is A BROWN BOMBER..not very pretty fish, but like grouper are delish..a fish from gulf water in Florida
16:40 the cold water definitely made that tarpon a bit sluggish. Still, that you landed it without the aid of a boat, is a testament to your skill fighting fish!
Few years back I was listening to a podcast and there was one nugget I took from the episode. Guy said he used to comm fish and one night heavy glow in the water, they could not get shit. Fish all over. Wouldn’t touch. He said there was one guy fishing the spot and he caught about 8 or so before the fella went and asked him what is his secret. Direct tie to braid. They see the leader. Tied direct and proceeded to limit out
Brand new to the channel! So glad that YT suggested this vid. Would this apply to freshwater? I'm going to have to try this out. I love fishing topwater, but I've often said that the front hook catches and back hook maims. I also design wooden lures. How about having just one treble in between where the two hooks would traditionally go? I'm thinking it would be better to keep the hook up front because the head would probably be the target of the predator.
Great video! Catch and release is the way to go. I would like to add the handling of the fish is super important too. I see alot of guys saying they love catch and release and yet handle and releasing the fish horribly. Taking the fish out of the water for 5+ mins. Trying to take a picture with their fingers in the fish's gills, throwing the fish back in the water with 3 inches of water hitting the rockes, Just horrible.... I cringe everything i see that....Yes the fish does swim off, but all I can think of is its swimming off to go belly up in a few mins...
Need more talk about the tail flags please. Lures made to swim with two hooks so when we remove the back need a similar weight flag. Can we buy these in a variety of weights? Can we make them ourselves and how do we add weight to the flag? more info on the flags please.
Tail flags can be purchased from a few different places, 247 Lures is one that immediately comes to mind. I will say that there is more to keeping the plug properly balanced than just cutting off the hook and replacing with any old flag, though. Perhaps we'll do a follow-up episode on this. Something I practice is to daytime test swim recently modified plugs that will be used at night. You may find some flags have an ill-effect on the swim action of certain plugs. Darters for example can be very fussy about tail flags because it's their sweeping swim motion that sells the strike. A number of top builders tirelessly test swim their demo plugs before production so the flag the plug comes with is the right one to use dimensionally. Heck, know some anglers that will rewire and fill in the tail hook hole with epoxy and the plug works great on a swiveled front belly. Ahh, the trail and error of surfcasting never ceases so pick up some flags and try different concepts with what you like to throw.
I jumped on this 3 seasons back. All my Minnow plugs, pencils & glide bates all single treble. The 1 thing I’ve noticed most…. Less damage to fish. I don’t think my catch rate has changed at all.
Not to mention removing the rear hook will cause you to miss a lot of bluefish, a good thing when targeting bass. And safety at night, less hooks to end up buried in YOU!

My buddies and I have been using one treble on our plugs for a long time. Unfortunately a handful of the stuff I have that has two belly hangers just fish better with 2 trebles and I reach for them less for that reason.
Very interesting concept. I’m going to try it. I wish there was more research on the use of barbless hooks. The fear or myth of landing less fish is just that. It’s a fear and a myth. I’ve used barbless hooks over 25 years from Bass tournaments to inshore to offshore to surf fishing. Barbless hooks whether inline or treble does the lease amount of harm to fish and to humans.
@@mcarmen299 👍 I put 2/0 BKK viper 41 on front and back however they are pricey . Check out the Bomber Windcheater formerly Rebel Windcheater . I’ve had The Rebel version for years cast well 2 oz 6” also pairs with 2/0 BKK.
