In the this episode of The Surfcast Podcast, Jerry and Toby talk retrieve speeds when fishing the surf. The classic narrative is that slower is always better, especially when targeting striped bass, but is this based in anecdotal evidence or just something someone said once that caught on from that point forward? Are there times when speed kills and others when speed is the key to success? Be sure to check out the episode to hear their thoughts, you might be surprised at what they have to say.

DUDE, you are one of the most articulate people discussing fishing techniques I've come across. I think you recognize fishing as the ART that it is, and as such, worthy of serious study. SUBSCRIBED!

Could you please tell me how to set a circle hook when retrieving a live eel? I am doing something wrong and miss 50 percent of my bites. Thank you

Don’t set the hook. Slow retrieve and when you get a hit reel until you’re tight.

Thank you for the response. I have not been setting the hook. I have just been slow reeling rod tip up when working the eel with slight twitching every once in a while. Once I feel the double tap of the fish bite,I try to lower the rod horizontally are reel in. The fis tend to either steal the eel or spit it out. It's driving me nuts. I am using a 8/0 or 9/0 owner tournament mutu hook. Not sure if it's too big or what the hell is going on

@@kevinmedeiros9281 I’ve been using a 6/0 or 7/0 solely because some hooks are too large to fit in the eye socket and I will cast the eel off. Make sure you snell your hook, that helps with hookup ratio. When I get a tap I generally lower my rod, wait a second for the fish to eat, then slowly reel until I feel the weight of the fish.
