So now a question for you, four year after you made these... how do you clean these babies 😅 because with the leather chucking them in the laundry can't be an option
@Desjima
@Desjima 5 дней назад
A seamstress trick of turning (fabric) corners inside out is to attach a bit of string to the tip and use that to pull the corner up and cut it afterwards... I don't know if it would work with leather even goat which is obviously stiffer

Hey I have a question regarding glueing leather to aluminum. I have a small aluminum cylinder that I would like to wrap but want to avoid stitching for production reasons. Any tips for making a clean looking seam where the wrap meets around the cylinder? Thanks!
@Cxizent
@Cxizent 7 дней назад
@@ShreddinSleds for glueing leather to another rigid material like aluminium, I'd recommend a two-part epoxy resin (here in Australia we have a brand called Araldite that I recommend strongly) If you don't stitch it, the seam will always be visible, but you can put some contact cement into the seam to attempt to bond both sides of leather together. Wrap the whole thing in something like a towel or shrink wrap and bind it with string to keep it snug while the glue dries, and good luck!
@ShreddinSleds
@ShreddinSleds 7 дней назад
@@Cxizent I’ll see if I can get that epoxy here in the States. I typically use E6000 which seems to adhere to anything, then I was thinking of using a piston ring compressor tool for clamping. I guess I’m also wondering if there’s anything decorative I could put over the seem? Like a small diameter rope or something other than just the seem? I dunno I’m open to ideas. Thanks for the response! Not everyone checks their RU-vid comments to reply

For anyone who wants to give this a shot without that many tools you can just buy some glover’s needles from a store called, Tandy leather. Glover’s needles pierce the leather and make the holes in the leather for you without the need for a pricking iron.

I really am enjoying your videos. I'm 81,but spent my younger years restoring a large victorian home in Michigan, USA. I watched you hot water installation, which prompted me to remember our similar wet basement situation. The plumber supported the water heater off the floor with 4 hockey pucks. He explained they are waterproof, won't wick up water and allow air movement under the heater to keep it dry , I'll keep watching The ox is slow, but the earth is patient GHM

The one thing I hate is how you used that first tool! You are meant to roll it! Not slide it! That's why it's a semi-circle, for easier cutting!! But otherwise, great leather cutting asmr.
@Cxizent
@Cxizent 3 месяца назад
Hey champ, you're wrong. It's not a semi-circle, it's actually a complex curve that has a different radius at many given points; this is to enable you to make many different kinds of cuts, such as a push cut, a rolling cut, or a pull cut. The reason you do a push cut on the very tip of the circumference would be for fine control over the cut, whereas a push cut using the middle of the curve has less ability to move from left to right, and this would be used for long straight cuts in thick leather. But otherwise, great comment.

@Cxizent Oh. This is why I need to learn more about these tools before I criticize others. I'm sorry. But now I understand, thank you. 😊

Why wouldn't you waterproof the leather before you stitch it together?
@Cxizent
@Cxizent 7 месяцев назад
Food question! Several answers: 1) The leather is HARD after water proofing, so you can't really shape it or stitch it easily B) The leather needs to be wet formed before it's water proofed, and that's much easier to do when it's all in one piece, and finally iii) You want to waterproof the seam, too! If you waterproofed two pieces of leather and then just stuck them together, the seam would leak

I was just wondering why you keep just one finger nail longer than the others. Is it for something to do when you making something. Just wondering thanks for the video it was vary good. 😊

Well normally a coke nail is on someone's pinky, but I've got a really big nose. Seriously, it's purely individual sartorial choice, and not related to making or leather crafting. Glad you liked the video!

I'd recommend the tools I used in the video, really. If you're not confident with the knives, I'd recommend having a look at my cutting leather tutorial, where I go more in detail about the different knives you might want to use.

1. What weight of leather are you using? 2. what prompted you to cut the middle and ring finger out of the palm side of the pattern? 3. what changes did you have to make to the pattern to get it fit properly? 4. If you had to do it over, what would you change? 5. Do you think its better to stitch it all by hand, or could you machine stitch some of it? I ask because I will making something similar for a Elvar Mann type High Republic Jedi in the next year which requires gloves with long cuffs that get covered with a bracer.
@Cxizent
@Cxizent 9 месяцев назад
Oh boy! Best of luck in making your own gloves, this was very rewarding for me. 1: this is goathide that's about 1.5-2.0mm thick. 2: the fingers need to be wide enough to wrap around the sides of your fingers, so they need to be wider in total than the width of the glove; therefore they need to be cut that wide and added on later. 3: mostly extending the fingers and getting the junction at the knuckles to sit in the right spot. These gloves are VERY tight. 4: minor pattern adjustments, and honestly not much else. I'm still extremely happy with these! 5: you can stitch it however you like, I personally prefer hand stitching, and a saddle stitch will always be stronger than a machine stitch because the thread crosses over in each stitch hole. Hope this all helped! Thanks for the questions

Hi this video is great! The glue you used is it flexible after it dries? I am using some leather finger cots to fix the finger lining on a baseball glove and the glue needs to be flexable.
