I have been with her, as a couple, for seventeen years, now, but I first met her when she was three years old and I was seven; she was my little sister's childhood best friend. She would joke that she got the trophy... "the friend's older brother." I'm not doing the best, stage four kidney disease, diabetic, high blood pressure, needing my knees replaced, in constant pain but don't dare to take enough painkillers to help enough to make a real difference. There's too much that I'll miss, but mostly, I don't want to leave her alone. Her sister became a widow way too young, and it's been destroying her. I don't want my reason to live to be sad.
I remember Isbell saying his mom cried when she heard this song. We hold on to all our memories as kids and I worry what my kids will remember. I hope I'm a good dad to them.

This is the first song I (I think) I heard of Jasons. He's now one of my favorites. I don't always agree with some of his politics but that doesn't matter. There's no denying his talent in both playing and song writing.

My dad is 76 years old. He was close with his cousin, Ted, who was less than a year younger than him. Both of them were constantly on the wrong side of the law. My dad straightened up in the 1970s and his cousin never did. Ted died late 2023 of natural causes (and to give you an idea of how much trouble he caused in life the feds inquired about him when he was reported deceased) 1:07-1:25 took my father out when I played this song for him. He always felt responsible for Ted. They grew up poor and abused and they were just trying to get out of their existence so to speak. He felt guilty for outliving him because he was older. Amazing how music can explain how you feel better than you can.

The DNC pulled a genius move having this man perform. This song is something else. It's escaped me for 9 years, but no longer. Actually, It's a pretty sad and cynical song, but still brilliant.
