Did this many years ago on my VW TDI. Be warned, the ATAS-120A does not hold up well under the stress of highway speed wind loading. All the vibrations will eventually loosens the components internally and will fail and will require complete disassembly. My advice is to detach the antenna from the mount when you're on the highway, install it when stationary to use, repeat.
thanks for your advice. I already took it apart once and didn’t find anything wrong. Put it back together and worked just fine. After some time I got the same problem. Swr is jumping, not stable. I believe it need an inspection again. I use it on the highway.
How I repair these screw posts is by cleaning the plastic and then lightly sanding as much of the remaining post as possible. I then fit a plastic drinking straw over the post and then injecting a plastic epoxy with the self mixing tip so the correct portions of resin and hardener mix completely in the special tip. I inject the epoxy into the straw forcing the adhesive down and around the post. This glue hardens quickly and the tip can be cleaned out with acetone. When hardened I use a fine drill bit to open a new hole and use the original screw. If you made it the post too high you can carefully sand down the post with a fine sanding disk on a Dremel hobby tool.
You definitely have to work on a better ground. I have the same type mount on my explorer and have some problems tuning 40 meters. But every other band 20 and up no problems. Great video. N1SHU
La sensibilità è ottima e superiore a tante altre radio. L'indicatore del segnale inganna perchè è piuttosto avaro e tende a sottostimare i segnali specie in UHF Quello che segna S.meter è solo una indicazione che non ha nulla a che vedere con la sensibilità e la capacità di ricevere i segnali deboli. Altre radio hanno un preamplificatore ma senza preamplificatore sono poco sensibili e non ricevono segnali deboli , se lo accendi hai la stessa sensibilità di una radio senza preamplificatore.
Li faccio in inglese per abbracciare un pubblico più ampio possibile dato che la piattaforma ha una visibilità mondiale. Sto pensando di farli in entrambe le lingue per il futuro ma chiaramente porta via molto tempo. Comunque si possono attivare i sottotitoli in italiano.

in effetti è vero. Io uso molto l’inglese e vedo molte cose in inglese, forse è per questo che li ho sempre fatto così. Ad ogni modo proverò a farli anche italiano. Grazie per aver visto il video e commentato. Un saluto!
Ottimo video! Grazie per la spiegazione e il test! Sarebbe interessante fare una prova comparativa con dele radio datate, tipo lo Yaesu FT1000 in tutte le sue versioni, e far capire ai più "duri d' orecchio" che non è vero che le radio nuove sono dei bidoni! Solo che è più semplice criticare invece aprire il manuale della nuova radio e imparare qualcosa di nuovo! Simone IW2LSO
Ciao Simone, nella mia esperienza chi dice che una radio è sorda o che un’antenna è rumorosa parla per sentito dire senza sapere di cosa sta parlando. Questo fa parte del pressappochismo delle persone in generale (purtroppo). Quanto al manuale d’uso della radio come saprai i più nemmeno aprono la prima pagina e forse non ne hanno mai aperto uno. D’altronde se uno è cresciuto senza studiare perché dovrebbe avere voglia ora di leggere un manuale. Non mi stupisco più di niente ormai. Per le prove da te menzionate potrei farne una tra questa e un FT-1000 MKV Field poiché ne possiedo una. In generale comunque non ho mai visto NESSUNA radio che non avesse abbastanza sensibilità sulle bande HF da poter ricevere un segnale. Semmai accade il contrario. Le radio sono troppo sensibili. Ti basti pensare che io ho SEMPRE IPO attivo e a seconda delle condizioni qualche step di attenuazione o comunque desensibilizzo con l’intervento dell’RF GAIN, che ai più è sconosciuto a quanto vedo in giro, ma che c’era anche sui CB, pensa un po’! @@IZ0MTW infatti a me fa proprio arrabbiare quelli che sostengono queste stupidaggini! Io dopo vari approfondimenti ho preso un Ft dx10 e, avendo letto il manuale, adesso riesco a spremerla per bene e ne sono molto soddisfatto! Ma partire col dire che le radio nuove non valgono niente come sentito tante volte, mi fa pena! Grazie a te per il tuo video!
there’s one clamp that comes in the box as you see in the video, and is the upper one that goes to the antenna mast. If you need to install the rotor on a pole then you need to order another one optional for the bottom side. In my case I don’t need that as I put the rotor in a cage. 73
@@IZ0MTW tnx for your quick answer. I bought two years ago a GS-1000dxc and unpacked it yesterday. There is no clamp in the box and when contacting the seller (Hamshop in The Netherlands) they state the top clamp, GC-038, is optional and need to be ordered separately. I think that's wrong since what purpose does a rotor have without a top clamp?
@snuitje100 I agree with you. But you said you bought a GS-1000dxc? Mine is only G-1000dxc without the “S”. Perhaps it was only the motor? guessing…there are few different variants, like the dxa for example. Mine comes definitely complete with upper clamps. Anyway just buy the clamp, I think it shouldn’t be that expensive.

Ho acquistato diversi oggetti della MFJ negli anni. La mia opinione è comunque positiva. È vero ci sono dei limiti, a volte dei difetti, ma non sempre. E a volte sono delle banalità facilmente risolvibili. Hanno prodotti per radioamatori, non per professionisti. Non devono rispondere a normative stringenti. Devono fare il loro semplice lavoro. Hanno una vastissima gamma di prodotti a catalogo, come nessun altro produttore. Questa in definitiva è la mia onestà esperienza ed opinione a riguardo. Saluti

@@IZ0MTW I currently have 4 FT-817s at home (including 2 ND). I have read the service manual in the old and new versions. There are actually some mistakes there. But I am interested in AGC modification. How did you make it?

I need to say you did an excellent video. I have the Is same radio with the ATAS100. I used to have the FT100 That had a much larger display. I also have that same microphone But forgot how to use all those features.Thanks for the refresher.
Very useful Video. Helped me. I too own a Marconi 2965A. You chose 30% Depth. Isnt that too low? Also you didnt use a Filter for Sinad (CCITT), is that OK?
The manual states it wants the probe and the unit to have matching serial numbers. I wonder if this calibration effort would allow alignment if using a replacement probe? BTW: Thank you for your effort producing this video.
you’re welcome and thanks for your comment. You’re correct, probe should match the unit and serial numbers testify that. My probe has no serial number on it so I don’t know what that means. Maybe a replacement bought during the years? Anyway, I performed a check and then a full alignment after I bought the unit second hand. Comparing the readings with all my other instruments I am definitely satisfied about its performance now. A nice bit of kit that I like to keep in my lab.
@@IZ0MTW ti ringrazio. Le ho trovate su hamradioshop, ci sono di due tipi, una con diametro magneti da 13mm e l'altra con diametro magneti da 9mm. A prima vista la tua mi sembra la prima, ossia quella con diametro magneti da 13mm. Mi confermi che hai preso quella da 13mm?
Questi sono l'equivalente di coloro che possiedono dei fuoristrada della madonna e poi il massimo di offroad che praticano è parcheggiare sul marciapiede in divieto..
Thank you for your very good video. I also have a Bird43 and an HP437 with an 8485A probe. The problem lies with the attenuators, how do you actually measure their value as a function of frequency.I also have a Nano VNA, but I don't think it's accurate enough for this. In fact the final result depends largely on how exact you can measure the attenuation over the frequency or at the frequency of interest. One tenth of a dB only can change a lot in the final figure for the power output value. We should really take account of all the accuracy in calibration and error propagation. Best wishes Diego
