Yeah I pulled my 77 shovel up to a bar buddy of mine left his fancy new Harley-Davidson ignition on or lights on or something that it was dead why he was standing there waiting on a jump I kicked my shovel and a giddy up giddy up I was gone😂
Yeah, i straddle the bike and stand up on it, that way my entire balance is centered and my force comes from the hip and not the knee. This one side stuff is very tiring.
I hear Wiskey Myers playing. That bike takes about 3 or so slow full downward kicks to set the compression release then kick. If no start then repeat the set-up of 3 or so light slow kicks to achieve the actual kick needed. Good job.
Ever wonder how a grateful few can "one kick" their points and condenser bikes with such consistency? Optimum jetted and adjusted carburetor & optimum ignition timing/system (points and condenser, advance mechanism (if used) ignition coil, and related wiring & connections) The engine needs fuel, compression, and a strong spark at the plugs (At The Correct Time) At the correct time is where setting the ignition timing comes in. For a kickstart bike a Crucial specification that is Often overlooked (after setting the point gap-.020") is all the focus is on checking points breaking in the advanced position. We're starting our engines when the points cam is in the retarded position. Rotate the engine till it's starting the compression stroke (both spark plugs out, put your thumb over the front cylinder plug hole) With the timing plug out keep rotating the engine until you see the Advance Timing mark... keep on slowly rotating the engine a little bit more until the Top Dead Center mark IS JUST coming into the inspection window. That's 5 degrees before TDC. Check and Set the points breaking in the retarded position. You now have a "one kick Harley. A Tip... with your clean ignition housing/distributor, new points and condenser and ignition timing set, seal the hole that the points wire goes through with a small dab of silicone (both sides of the hole) Also use a new points cover gasket. The idea being to keep any moisture and dirt out... ensuring a clean environment. Enjoy.
