The clue is in the name, testing this knife on cardboard??? Knife reviews like this are pointless, a bit like saying the McLaren Formula One car is rubbish because it doesn't work off road. I have several knives in H1, both plain and spydie edge, they are great for the purpose that they were designed for which is use in and around salt water. People who use these knives for their intended purpose have no problem spending a few minutes on the edge when needed, trading a little bit of edge retention for a blade that won't rust is worth it for me and having read the comments for most other H1 knife users too. If you want to cut lots of cardboard, then yes, there are better steels for that purpose but that isn't what this knife is for.

Thanks for the info about the sheath. This was on my WTB list until hearing about the sheath. 😢

Not Hydrogen! It’s Nitrogen instead of Carbon. Also - Carbon itself doesn’t “rust”. Rust is oxidized iron (Fe) and rust’s chemical formula: Fe2O3 Rust is hydrated ferric oxide AKA iron oxide. 4Fe + 3O2 + 6H2O -> 4Fe(OH)3 It does hold an edge… it’s just doesn’t hold elan edge good for the first use. Like heat-treating with carbon steels, sharpening/abrasion tempers H1 steel - therefore with every sharpening, you also hardening the edge making it harder, tougher, holding an edge longer and longer.

The same thing happens with Cold steel knives and their Secure Ex sheaths, made of glass reinforced nylon called FRN or Zytel. The glass particules are harder than steel and the friction dulls any blade. I made mods on my secure ex disassembling them and putting a leather strip inside where the edge touches the sheath.

Lol, I used to be exactly in the same spot @ 9:25 ... I sent my first one back cuz I thought it was soft (more than a decade ago) but then I missed the actual blade. It feels amazing- the balance, the control. So I bought another... Anyway, YES, the sheath is the culprit, dulling your edge just like the Cold Steel secure-ex sheaths. Use it on a cutting board and the edge will do fine. Glass filled nylon sheaths destroy edges.

I paid 130$ for the mini subway bowie. Not worth the money. Super small. Doesn’t fit into sheath. The 40$ CRKT minimalist is better

as a diver, you’re flat out wrong about H1, the edge retention in my experience has been MUCH better than you’ve made it out to be, and you truly have no idea how valuable it is to have a knife that preforms every time, regardless of how long you forget it exists and let it rot on your kit, admittedly H1 isn’t the be all end all of knife steel, there’s a time and a place. if you’re taking a knife snorkeling just because you want to justify the purchase of said knife, you will be disappointed, if you are actually planning on diving the salt series is fantastic, buy it, let it rot on your bcd, use it, sharpen it once a month or less

Your very inexperienced ! If you wanted something that will cut endlessly you should have gotten the full serrated model. Sorry but this is not a fillet knife! Knives have a specific purpose, you do not seem to appreciate that...

Went ahead and ordered the knife. For me, it's a perfect fixed blade martial EDC. Making a custom Kydex sheath for it is an easy fix and worth it, in my humble opinion... Good video too btw!

Wrap the knife in sandpaper and slide it in and out of the sheath. It will rough up the inside giving it a better surface to glide along at the edge. Because the surface at the edge is smooth. Meaning there is more surface area to catch along the edge. Therefore dulling the blade. Additionally. You could just sand down the edge line of the sheath. To make sure that the edge is not contacting with the sheath it self. All you need is a bit of double stick tape and some sand paper.

No issues with mine, ended up getting another sheath anyway. The sheath from the factory is made from a injected nylon glass material it will dull your blades just like the cold steel sheaths.

This guy is useless. This exact knife is on my riggers belt right now. I dive with it and use it as my deck knife. No one uses these things as hard as a diver offshore. The king of work knives. Just ordered the spider edge.

Professional diver here... Spend 4-6 hours per day 5-6 days per week underwater. I use a titanium blade knife. I hate titanium blades, but I don't have time to fiddle with my knife daily... I just need it to be operational when I need it. Oh, and they infused the steel with nitrogen, not hydrogen.

A lil late to the party though as former federal LE, having spent 5 1/2+ years as a deep undercover operative(Group I UCO for those familiar), I only carried/carry fixed blade knives/punch daggers for self defense. My everyday pocket carry knives are a Winkler SD2 proto, which is identical to the production run with the exception that mine has the earlier 3 1/2" blade and I guess that Dan did his customs for a bit with the choice of 3 1/4" or 3 1/2" versus the production has a 3 1/4" blade. My other pocket carry is Bill Rapier's AMTAC Northman proto, spec'd identically to the production model(3 1/2" blade). While the Tamashii is not in my regular rotation(I've got the black & tan grips), I would have absolutely zero reservation about carrying it. I prefer my blades to be 3-3 1/2" for my self defense knives and 1.75"-2.75" for my Punch-T daggers. Easy clearance, easy deployment and can penetrate into any organ in the human body. I take the clip(s) off and pocket carry my fixed blades. The Tamashi is a superb knife and incredible value as I love the traditional Tanto D2 blade(Japanese Tanto, not the American version, lol), kydex sheath and the G10 grip!! Lyn Thompson and Cold Steel did our custom knives/daggers for us back in the day and I still carry two D2 Damascus(360 layer) punch daggers that are 32yo+ and the blade is still lethal sharp and this was before the technological advancement with heat and cryo treatments of D2. While D2 is not a "premium" steel, it is a Iconic warhorse that has withstood the test of time as I'm usin D2 blades that are older than most of the YTubers reviewin em 😂😂. Let's not forget that D2 is the foundation of arguably the finest tool/tactical knives in the world, at least the biggest sellers from Benchmade, and these knives ain't budget as they run $300, $400 & $500+ Regarding the Street Beat, I have a few, it's a nice knife, though I got the custom kydex sheaths for mine. As noted, the Street Beat OEM sheath is garbage, though you can pick up a nice kydex sheath from rkcustomkydex. Excellent fit along with easy thumb deployment from a pocket carry or belt carry. rkcustomkydex.shop/products/spyderco-street-beat-kydex-sheath That said, I'd take the Tamashii over the street beat all day, though the Street Beat is a very solid knife. got a couple of Terzuola customs and he is one of my fave designers!! I couldn't believe the price on this knife!! I also agree on the lanyard!! While I do carry my EDC folders with lanyards cuz I pocket carry them versus pocket clip and the lanyard with a custom bead/ball is an easy grab. I get a full grip on my fixed blades when deploying from my pocket, so the lanyard just gets in the way. Regarding the Civivi brand, I've got four of their folders and they make a superb wallet💵 friendly knife!! They all come with a polishing cloth in a small zipper padded nylon case. Nice review🤙 Stay Well & Stay Safe🍻 RP

Have had mine for close to 10 years now and all of your experiences with it I have. Very difficult to get a good edge and the damn sheath dulls the edge. I thought I was crazy lol. I'd spend what would seem like forever to put a hair popping edge on it and all of a sudden it would be dull.

Nice review. Gave you a sub and like. Yeah, the H1 does get dull and I just got a neck knife in LC200N, the Subway Bowie. LOVE the knife and sheath. They did it right on that combo for sure. The sheath holds the knife solid, NO wiggle and NO chance of it coming out by accident. Why they don't make quality sheaths for all their knives, I don't know. I'd rather pay more than get that silly plastic stuff.

That SUCKS about the sheath! But Spyderco SUCKS AT MAKING SHEATHS. I just made a replacement in kydex for my Subway Bowie, and I had to do so for my Enuff and Swick, as well. The retention SUCKED.

Unfortunately Benchmade has discontinued this version of the Nimravus. If you wanted this version now is the time to snap one up. The only one they're doing from now on is the partially serrated tanto version with a sand colored handle.
