Disturbing as The Omen, but upped a great deal for modern movies. Still works along with the originals, as if the prophecy and other parts of the original was just nisread. Works far, far, far, infinately better than the movie Omen IV.
I was concerned by the change going into the movie, but having seen it, the changes are still explainable when it comes to the movies. The jackal is still there, but different. The way it was said could be told the same way, The Jackal is visible, and dies in the fire. It could have been the father was the jackal. Since he was born with the D.N.A., it could be said born of a jackal. Slight reach, but still works.
Ralph--With you all the way! The photography was AMAZING for one thing--an aura of darkness pervaded every single frame. Tension--everywhere. Even at the start, where Harker and the young FBI guy were canvassing that neighborhood. The film hadn't even started moving yet, and still, there was a "weight" everywhere--that "dread" you mentioned--even in the damn briefing room! This wasn't something you can classify easily as "horror," "crime-drama," or even into a discernible sub-genre I think. Definitely a stand-alone film, driven by a distinctive, and crucially--ORIGINAL--creative vision, something that we haven't seen out of Hollywood in what feels like centuries, except coming from indie shops like Neon and A24, which are really killing it, especially in horror. Saw it on Saturday in Deptford, NJ at a 12:15 show and the place was packed solid--haven't seen that in years. People are tired with Marvel/Disney, the destruction of "Star Wars," and franchise revivals, though "The First Omen" was a standout in this regard, since it had more to it. Thus far, some pretty good flicks this year--the Hugh Grant "Heretic" looks fascinating, and of course, "Nosferatu" at Christmas, though I fear (as another version of the Dracula story) they may be hanging the movie on the beauty of the picture and FX perhaps, though it's early in the game--just a hunch. And by all means--a Deep Dive on "Longlegs" would be awesome! Were you aware of the "lore" website that was part of the marketing campaign? I looked at it last night: thebirthdaymurders.net. "Crime Scene" stills, decoding of the letters, info on other killings, etc.--supposed to be a "website" put together by one of those true crime fans from the early '90s. Even has the look of an old-school website. I think there's another site (also marketing connected) which is far eerier, but you'd have to Google the URL. Great job on the content!
I actually like the movie. Started off slow but turn out to be a great movie. Nicolas Freaking Case did it again and Blair Underwood who has been underestimate in his career. For some reason, they love doing some type of satanic things in small town in the middle of nowhere with very little population in the town.
"Yeeeeaaaaaahhhh mmmmmmmm, yeah imma need yeah to NOT HOLLYWOOD thanks that would be greaaaat. Yeeeeeaaahhh mmmmhhhmmmmm. -sips coffee* Yeesaaaahhh thannnkkks bud. -Bill Lumbergh
How are you doing today and how your day? I thought it was a solid movie but I did not see the first two movies she made. Maybe my opinion would change if I saw those two movies. I took it as an typical slasher 80 type movie? I do alway appreciate your insights of your movie reviews.
While I did enjoyed this movie, for me, it's not as good as the first two films in the series. Everyone is loving Frodo the cat though. I know this film might make my top 10 best horror movies of the year.
I 100% agree with *_EVERYTHING_* you say, here; I, too, am extremely "not happy" with all the changes! The _only_ way to make the movie barely watchable, is to keep the thought that it’s a *reimagining,* _not_ a prequel, in the forefront on my mind!
Great review ralph! Man I had high expectations for this....can't believe it's mediocre by the reviews😢 I still think The last Exorcism part 1 and 2 were the last of the great possession movies made....aside from it's champion The Exorcist🏆
Did they not research the original Omen film when it says Damien's mother was a Jackal? Either stick to the original story or do a reboot, what was the point of trying to align everything up with the original film when they just change plot points 😂
Did you all not scour web before this movie yea so Damien mother is human but read wiki did you all know jackal debate is as old as first movie? For example book is not movie universe since last 2 books don't match last 2 films, then in an interview of first movie or about it somebody said Damien was born of a jackal not from, words matter here because they took biblical myth of antichrist, and of and from mean 2 diff stuff. Second most stuff in Bible isn't even literal. And finally Margaret is less jackal than son, she's half jackal since devils daughter and Damien should be three fourths. Lastly if you scoured net you'd know some ppl who saw 1976 omen thought the jackal thing was done to keep birth more ambiguous, so if you wanna gripe about jackal stuff actually be able to back anything you all say up. Thing that got me with this movie was timeline. If you take the Damien trilogy in 1971 he's 32 so... I'm surprised you all missed that. But no I'm no movie critique just detail oriented and like debates if ppl actually research before whining. All I hear of reviews of this movie is jackal gripes which is hardly a accurate review and yes I'm aware it's not like 1976 movie but don't all the haters think they purposely didn't touch it cuz they knew it was good how was? And you whine on said point? They already made a remake of 1976 movie, personally I like mystery for sake of and not over explained. And this movie couldn't be better than original so again they knew that. Just take it for what is
This was quite the mixed bag for me. I really liked the first two acts, I thought the mystery and thrills were very engaging. Unfortunately the 3rd act really went down hill for me. The reveal and “twist” just didn’t work for me. Great review
not seen this movie. i heard elephant by alan clarke was similar, and elephant by gus van sant which is loosely based on clarke's short film. so i will check those out
I'm going to wait a while before I say anything. Lol. A hard reset seems to be a good move. "Radical take" has me kinda worried - as long as they don't break canon.
Can we get Mike Flanigan to also go back and redo Exorcist Believer??? That movie was not only bad but also destroyed what should have been great reintroductions of Regan and Chris McNeil. Flanigan is a great visionary of Horror. I look forward to what he can do with The Exorcist. He did great with the NetFlix's mini series: The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass and my favorite, The Fall of the House of Usher. And his Stephen King films, Gerald's Game and Dr. Sleep were also very good. I trust Flanigan with an The Exorcist story.
So does this mean the trilogy is off? I can't believe blumhouse would spend 400 mill for the rights to the franchise then scrap the planned trilogy just because the believer didn't do good, you still got two other films in the trilogy that could have done better with Flanagan directing them, what's going to be so radical about this remake , if it's not connected to the OG storyline or bringing back regan and chrissy.?
How it going today? Great review on this movie. After watching this movie, this movie was so funny in a weird way that it did not make sense what they did in the movie? SMH.
