Apparently she had do change her look after Like a prayer video as she started filming Dick Tracy. The brunette era just lasted one video. 😂. I’m breathless is a great and very different album. You’ll enjoy it for sure. Like a prayer is my favourite and I still listen to it without skipping any track.

They did a cover of "It Only Takes a Minute" originally by the Tavares. I remember there being an attempt to break them in the U.S. with that song around 1993, but this was too soon after the fall of New Kids on the Block when audiences were resistant to another boy band. "Back for Good" became a surprise top 10 hit for the group in the U.S., but its success owed more to its easy listening appeal than any real surge of interest in the group. Then the sudden rise of Backstreet and Nsync just a few years later further marginalized the group, making them seem unnecessary. So while they made pretty big waves in Europe, they remain a one-hit wonder in the States.

I agree that this song sounds quite similar in style to "Prophet's Song". I think that's the risk of producing albums back to back, as Queen did in the 70s. Ideas end up being reused. I do appreciate this song and the fact that they tackled a social issue, but I wish it didn't sound so much like "Prophet's Song", which, in my opinion, is one of the best in their catalog. I'd prefer if nothing else borrowed from its style.

"I'm Breathless" is a unique album, something very unexpected from her... Certain artist, who has been studying every Madonna's step, has released an album with a similar content, this "lady" will always live under Madonna's shadow though... LOL

Roger's songs have a distinctive style that can take time to get accustomed to, often veering further from the norm than the work of Brian, Freddie, and John. His music reflects a youthful, stripped-down sensibility rooted in rock rebellion, which is evident in his creative output.

I think it was the language barrier (written by writers whose native language isn't English) that caused the main version of IWITW to seem nonsenical.

I’d be really interested to hear what you think of Madonna’s vocals on I’m breathless Ace. Her voice continued to evolve with a confidence and level of control that makes it seem like someone else singing if you compare it to the first album. I loved I’m breathless - she got into the character of each of the songs

Roger's songs are always a nice respite from the grandiosity of Queen's catalog. The songs aren't usually my favorites on an album, but they add a few earth tones to the rainbow of colors that is Queen! :)

The pop station I listened to decided it was still too much and re-edited the long two-part album version, so the song became "I Want Your Love." That version was absurd. George's direct insinuation was unprecedented at the time - while sex had been alluded to in pop songs before, he was one of the first to explicitly state the sexual desire in such blunt terms, and have it become a major hit. Even artists like Prince tended to use more coded, metaphorical language about sex in their popular tracks. In contrast, George's lyrics like "I want your sex" and "Don't you think it's time you had sex with me?" came across as comparatively brazen for the era. Of course, looking back, the song now seems almost quaint in its forwardness, given how much more explicit pop music has become over the years.

The song's racy lyrics sparked widespread controversy in 1987. Radio host Casey Kasem of American Top 40 refused to even say the song's title on his countdown show. Religious right-leaning churches vehemently denounced the track. Some programming directors went so far as to remove the song from their station's rotation. MTV required George to record a disclaimer about the dangers of casual sex, which aired before each airing of the video. The mere mention of "sex" in the song's lyrics seemingly sent the entire nation into an uproar. It was as if many folks had somehow forgotten the basic biology behind human procreation.

Hi Ace, there’s a brilliant podcast by MLVC and they interview Steve Bray extensively. It’s here on RU-vid and runs for 59.16 and really digs deep into their songwriting relationship from the really early days, from Michigan in the late 70’s to NY in the early 80’s in the lead up to Madonna breaking through. There’s also quite a bit that then goes through the rest of the 80’s. Really really interesting

You're correct. It was a statement piece, and it did exactly what it was supposed to. The model is actually his ex Kathy Jeung (I probes got the last name wrong, but hey, it's 1am, someone will correct me). I just remember this song hitting right about the time I started, y'know, so it caught my eye even more than it would have. Went from Wham! to this. You can be 1,000% certain EVERYONE noticed.
