I caught a wave like traditional surfing, once I move fast enough the foil starts to fly and glide around on the waves and "pump" the foil like a bird flapping its wings. No wind at all
@@OllyBrunton Thanks for responding man. I just bought a used 34l Armstrong fg board (2022-2023 version) and I'm gonna bring it with me to Thailand next week. Do you know if there's a vent screw that needs unscrewing or anything that needs to be done before flight? Thanks
@@Axel-gn2ii From my understanding if there is a vent screw it will do its job without you having to do anything, usually under 40L there is no screw but I havent seen to confirm.
Hey, great video thanks. Where about do you put your level on the foil side to calculate the rake between the board and the foil, fuse, mast hollow part or hexagon? Thanks
I dont use empirical measure. I have a start point with balancing the foil setup with the fulcrum being the mid point of the front foil and can feel, while lifting, the weight distribution. Going riding is where it all gets worked out.
@@Hmanfoilif you can try out a 45 do it. I went to a Armstrong demo day and they didn’t have a 55 so I tried the 45. So fun to ride, super smooth in the turns and really surprising how easy to get going. I have bought the 55 because it is my light wind board, I am learning to prone and a I have a 40l fg wing board for breeze on. You have a light wind board so maybe the 45 would be more fun and slightly easier to travel with… Not to undermine what Olly has said but he is a but heavier 😬I’m 69kgs.
Hi Olly, Just found you page and loving it. Thanks for sharing all the knowledge as well. I’m newer and currently riding CF set up, primarily towing behind a boat. I want to buy my first downwind wing. Do you have any recommendations?
Heya. A bSUP oard 30-40L above your weight in KG. If you weigh 80kg, then a 110-120L volume board. 72cm-795mm mast, 60 or 70cm fuselage, HA foils depending on your weight..HA1080 or 1180 or even APF foils to make it easy.

Hi again Olly. Quick question. I went with the 75fuse. I know you are very knowledgeable into mast placement with shims etc. all good My question. 75 vs 60 fuse. Ha780 speed 180. No shims. What’s the mast position adjustment going from 60 to 75???
I think of Fuselage length as being resonant with stance width. The Fuselage length is the wavelength of the "Pitch" experience. If youre a tall guy then longer fuselage, note how they are similar to the width of a snowboard stance. Your control of the "Up and down" movements of the foil are best done with a comfortable stance width of your legs. Thats the datum idea, the start, you can also use longer if youre going faster, or use shorter if in shallow areas for quick climbing and error corrections. If youre under 6 foot in height, go 65cm, if youre over 6'4" in height go 75cm. If youre a novice, go 75cm, if youre foiling already, go 65cm. Choose for your size, ability and prevailing local conditions.
@@ollybrunton1961 roger all that. Well I’ve tested myself re mast placement, and found that I was able to move the mast significantly backwards. So going from 60 to a 75fuse, there was the exact same front foot pressure after the mast put way back. Really interesting 🤨
I’m loving the alloy setup. I’m using it for downwind sup foiling and find it to be nice and stable when down on the board or when paddling up. Awesome product🙌🏼
Hey Olly!! You're killing it! I'm curre tly using CF950 for winging and proning. But I have in the quiver the HA925, MA800 and HA680. Do you think I could switch to the HA680? Enlighten me please! Currently 68kg btw!!
The HA range have amazing lift. The HA880 may have beena better choice for this day, but didnt have it at this stage. Just had to squeeze a bit more skill set juice instead.
Thanks for posting this review Olly. I'm seriously considering the 8'2 for ocean downwinding here in NSW, Auatralia. I've spent a year downwinding a 110L 8'2 Barracuda. I'm also comfortable on a 102L 7'10, 19 wide Barracuda. 75kg intermediate downwinder with a 9km ocean ace under my belt. From that info do you think i could manage the 8'2 at 16 3/4 wide? Its the width and drop in volume that have me worried... Thanks in advance if you have the time to answer 👍
To be safe, as downwinding is offshore and energetic resources are part of safe landing, I suggest taking a similar volume to what you are used to, same or a bit more. If reducing volume you will reduce your range as youll probably spend more energy on restarts. Narrowness is ok if the length is there too, but volume cannot be replaced by a different shape. Hope this helps
First few clips, 0-12 knots. Had to wait for a good gust and work pretty hard to get on foil. My prone experience pumping helps a lot, once I get the nose off water I pretty much can pump my way onto foil and use the wing to also generate speed following. From there, try not to goof it and stay on foil 😆
Heya. Using a paddle that’s eye brow height with 88 sq inch blade. I’m happy to up my cadence vs loading on a big blade. Only change I think I’ll make is up the length to head height.
Hi. Was wondering what mast and size you were on in this? I just bought the A+ package with this front wing with the regular 85 mast. wanted it for light wind winging. I see a few on line comments that the performance mast is a must? Thanks S
Seen guys assembled and disassembled their Armstrong foils longer than out riding or pumping…some guy even has to carry Mallet to help dislodge the fuselage from mast housing 😅…but the Company claims graphic like cross-walk known to repel Sharks…Respect…
Early foils did attract sharks with the vibrations of early gear, it was a deliberate effort to deter sharks for sure. Certainly has a point of difference between foil companies.
Hiya. This is the recently released Wing FG board for winging. Its only 4'4" and 40L so within my range of prone board specs. It goes really well as a prone board! www.armstrongfoils.com/wing-fg-board/
Nice vid Olly. Have you tried sup foiling larger ( headhigh/overhead) waves with that same combo setup? I was thinking of getting the ha 880 but afraid its too slow for large surf.
Thanks Bud. No when the surf is cranking I always take the prone board out, managing the board in big surf here can be hectic, so much power even when small. I have used in head high surf on the prone board during high tide for extended pump sessions, Its fast enough..I'll use the dart 140 to reduce drag, and also shim 1.5 degree for a 0 degree offset for the fastest setup, but yaw stability is reduced making for a loose setup when going fast.
The DWP755 is more akin to the former HA foils, its fast and responsive. The HA880 is much more user friendly, pitch stable, easier starts and slower stall speed, this run was the first send and my longest to date, so ran with a safe foil for energy efficiency. DWP755 much more fun though
Thanks Mick 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽 was 100 more tricky than I ever imagined. Toward the end the current runs upwind, was difficult to keep speed with swell. Also a second swell enters from left once 5km out..was a real challenge! Loved it though 😂
Hey Olly - I'm keen to get on the new HA train. Currently riding an MA1000, but pumping on it sucks. I can connect 2-3 on it at best, but it turns super nicely on the face. I'm 88kgs. Do you reckon the 780 or 880 is the go?
Heya man, Id say the HA880 if youre wanting to connect more than 3 waves, The MA foils turn really nice, New HA not quite the same, but still great turners..keep in mind the New HA foils are designed for the connect style sessions where pump glide and turn all have a equal play in the design. The HA780 might just extend your wave count 1-2 waves but youll have MA1000 like turns. HA880 will bump up wave count but you wont lose that much turn that you would prone the MA1000 again.
I’ve got the original 72cm and the new 795 performance mast. While just messing with it, it’s slightly stiffer but nothing crazy. Pumping it doesn’t feel all that much stiffer. Where the true stiffness seems to come into play is turns. The original mast almost has some flex and lag where the board exits the wave and the wing seems to still be on the wave. The performance mast seems to feel like it’s following you closer. The biggest change for me is the foil section that pumps easier and has a little more speed. You can sink this mast and recover easier than the original. Worth the extra cost? I don’t think so. But if you’re pushing the limits and need to upgrade, sure. Or if you have the money and buying a new setup, sure. But would most people need this mast, absolutely not, in my opinion
Hi! My go to was HA 725, I m 50kg, winging practice & wing released do you think I can go for a 780 as my light wind wing / small waves setup, and the 580 > 18 knots / bigger waves, or just one wing quiver : the 680 ?
Mate that looks like so much fun, looking forward to seeing you on the 880. Ive just ordered the new 880 for prone only, im pretty excited. Im sure sure what Stab I should be using? Do you think id get away with the old HS232 or do i need a more performance stab? Thanks Brad
Heya Brad, The older Stabs have been designed around the older foils. They still work, but with the new profile designs the offset between foil and stabilisers has changed. The Speed 180 and Dart 140 are excellent stabilisers for the New HA foils. I stopped using the HS232/212 and the HA195 when the MA foils came out, I personally found the difference in tech a bit off and had to negative shim the tails to balance out the drag of the newer profile designs. Can of worms. Best bet is to match a stabiliser with foil, they have been designed with each other, youll get the best ride.
Had fun pumping the 925 but had to focus soooo much on the turns,……could turn the 725 but could not Connect as many waves and not fun at low speed😅,….had so much fun surfing the Cf2 950 but could not pump far……..IS THE MAGIG FOIL FOR SURFING THE HA680 or 780??????.?.😅
I have had lots of time on the HA880, I have been downwind sup foiling with it and enjoying small prone days on it. 5-6 minute waves are a norm for me with the HA880 paired with the Speed180 and one red shim. Im 78kg and would call the HA880 my SUP foil for all Sup styles. It does for prone what the HA1125 did, extended connect sessions with knee to head high waves. If you throw the Dart 140 on to stabilise the turn improves and the small stuff can be dynamic like the HA680. I really think the Dart 140 and Speed 180 tails should accompany these new HA foils, you get 2 different distinct styles out of each HA foil.
