Temperatures rarely ever dip below 5C, and if it snows, it melts within a day or two. Summers are mild with refreshing ocean breezes and few if any wildfires.
Known as the Harbour City, Nanaimo is the hub of Central Vancouver Island and can be accessed by boat, ferry, seaplane, or airplane.
In 1980 until 1982 we lived in Nanaimo. I didn’t like it. A lot of Satan Choice were there. I used to call it Butcher’s Hollow. We then moved to Victoria. It was great. Loved Government street and Oak Bay Marina.
@@TerryMensah-Glover i’ve been meaning to talk about the campus for a while. Definitely assorting of housing up there! Thank you so much for watching and commenting 👍
Lived there 4 years.... good riddance. Rain, ferries, and not very nice locals. Too many LGBTQ and baby boomer idiots. Their politics have ruined Canada. RiP: BC
Parksville does not have a Mediterranean climate which requires an average yearly temperature of 10 degrees Celsius. Parksville's average temperature is 9.5 C. sorry. Port Alberni is the only Vancouver Island city that has a Mediterranean climate, as Koppen defines as Csa. (with Lake Cowichan and Woss Camp coming extremely close) Of further interest is that Port Alberni holds the Canadian record for Snowfall (to answer your question, yes it snows on Vancouver Island.) In the winter of 1967-68 Port Alberni had a snowfall of 23 feet 11 inches. One of the ridges on the way to Tofino, Dorian Ridge regularly get over 80 feet of snow. Ummm maybe you should ask is "do many cities on Vancouver Island NOT get snow".
Cool summers and beaches without swimmers in the oceans doesn’t look like Mediterranean climate, but yes, the winters are mild like in Mediterranean countries. Wherever you can see the hardy palm-trees growing in parks and beaches, that is a variety of Mediterranean climate😊
3 bedroom water damaged lead paint house without vents that might also fall into a mine shaft and cant be renovated cus its on heritage land or whatever. $7,000,000 and $20k yearly land payments. Than go work at McDonald's to pay for it cus there is literally nothing going on whatsoever on Vancouver island. The most exciting thing to ever happen here is seeing the change from winter to summer.
Maybe do some retakes when you say the wrong dates instead of a little fumble correction. Now we have incorect dates in our heads for no reason. And bro dont mention something really cool and interesting like the riots and shootings over protest about the mines than say "look it up" like bro, were literally watching a video for the history of that right now, Dont tell me to to look it up myself instead of just explaining it for 30 seconds while were all already here and you know the history
Deal of the month!! I have friends who found out it's cheaper to take the walk-on ferry to downtown Van and rent a BMW for the weekend than take their own vehicle.
Those working don't go all the way to Gabriola, maybe 1/2 way, if that. There are shafts in downtown Nanaimo (just south of the mall) that connect with shafts on Protection Island through the workings under the harbour. There's a story that's where the water and electrical supplies for Protection are placed, don't know if that's still true. There's also connections from the shafts near the Departure Bay ferry terminal under the channel to workings under Newcastle Island. There's at least 5 shafts on Shaft Point (surprise, surprise). The mines shut down due to economic conditions (competition with oil) not because they ran out of coal.
As soon as anything goes up for sale people with cash by multiple lots... wait for the value to appreciate and sell to other rich people. These people make cash not doing a thing. Makes it impossible for a family to afford to live there.
Nanaimo is a nice city with great service, all the amenities and great views. I moved to Gabriola a year ago and I’m so glad that Nanaimo is our support city.
@@Nanaimore great to hear! My wife and I are avid viewers. We currently live in Ottawa but are planning on relocating to Vancouver Island in the next few years. Your videos have been really helpful in pointing us towards Nanaimo. When visiting my father last year in Duncan we spent a week in Nanaimo looking at neighborhoods. Will definitely contact you when we make the move.
Interesting. While collapse of former mine workings is an obvious concern, methane produced from coal or former tailings piles can be of greater concern.
So far it's just been a problem with cracked foundations here. No reports like they have in Newcastle in Great Britain where the mines "breathe" due atmospheric pressure changes, filling basements with noxious gases and causing unhappiness for the residents when they go downstairs for something and pass out.
Great informative video. As a 12 yr. resident of Nanaimo, one thing that struck me about Parksville that you didn’t touch on is the lack of ethnic and cultural diversity - just my opinion!
I loved your Video but just like a typical man, 😊 you failed to mention the shopping ; are there stores, grocery or otherwise; are there barbers and hair salons, spas , theatres , schools, what is winter like.. etc. or have you made another video about all the other stuff.. just curious.
We are from Toronto GTA visiting Nanaimo now, we bought groceries at Walmart, superstore and other local stores, everything is more expensive than Ontario. There are extra tax for juice bottles, meat, chicken… really?! In Ontario we do not pay tax for these items.
Another strong reason to avoid Nanaimo as a place to live. Violent crime in this area is reported on almost a daily basis in Victoria and other regional newspapers.
Fantastic video! I'm Cat, owner of a travel company that brings people to Nanaimo, Qualicum and Parksville for an active vacation. I'll share your video with my customers. Sometimes they buy places here too!
I always encourage people to come and visit for a vacation before they decide on where to purchase a property. I’ll make sure to look you up online and reference your company ❤️
I'm puzzled, why no mention of the British royal navy who found the coal deposits for use as fuel for their coal powered warships in the Pacific. The natives knew some locations but, for pitch.
Sure take Jinglepot road but remember the speed limit is between 50-60K NOT 80-90K, its not a secondary highway. I live in that area and the traffic has quadrupled in the last 5 yrs the speeding is out of control (as it is everywhere in Nanaimo) no sidewalks at all just a ditch or tree, kids dogs deer horses bicyclists school zones etc, one of the most dangerous roads to be an ass on, tailgate me and I'll slow to the exact speed limit.
Nanaimo used to be such a beautiful place to live back in the 1900s when harewood was still mostly farming land . Now our beautiful islands 🏝 are turning into $hitty cities 💩 with horrible traffic .
It's surprising how many people in Nanaimo don't know about the mines. Probably not a big selling feature for real estate.. I worked with a guy who bought a new house near Divers lake, (this was in the Free press back then) he could hear water running in his basement. He got curious one day and took a sledge hammer to his basement floor. Underneath was an air shaft to a coal mine. If you check building codes for the mine areas concrete floors and driveways have to be reinforced with steel mesh to avoid collapse.
Well just a little frustrating. Shocking to see a video of our old haunts! Being broadcast to so many. Hoping you are not trying to make a profit videotaping great places in nature without donating a major percentage of your profits to help protect habitat. The “jaw breaking” places are being overwhelmed…
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_coal_mines_and_landmarks_in_the_Nanaimo_area Also I have seen a map with all the mine tunnels on it. It was alarming how many tunnels there was and how far they went.
Bonus for the Chandler Encroachment near Northfield. All records have been lost, so we just have a hatched area on the map labelled "Here Be Dragons, err, coal workings, approximately".
Moved to Nanaimo in summer of 2016. It was a quaint, beautiful city on the water. Over the next 6 years things went downhill fast. The downtown turned into a real scary place with homeless drugged up zombies asking us for money, tents, filth and homeless everywhere. The crime in and around the downtown got bad too. Businesses were leaving the downtown like crazy and I don’t blame them. All the mayor does is blame the provincial government. Really sad because it used to be a nice place. Left in 2022 due to the issues (including affordability) that plague Nanaimo.
