Not sure I agree with the three choices in North Nanaimo. I live downtown and although I'm angry that the city doesn't do more for and with the so-called homeless, the problem needs to be addressed rather than avoided. People who enjoy city living tend to understand the advantages and disadvantages. Personally, I've never felt unsafe.

Actionable solutions exist but there is a lack of mobilization and financial capacities deployment from politics. According to A.I. : Compulsory Treatment Programs: Some jurisdictions have implemented compulsory treatment programs where individuals with severe drug addiction are mandated by law to undergo treatment. These programs involve involuntary commitment and aim to provide intensive rehabilitation in a controlled environment. However, it is important to consider the ethical implications and potential human rights concerns associated with involuntary treatment. Safe and Managed Consumption Sites: Safe consumption sites, also known as supervised injection facilities, provide a controlled environment where individuals can use drugs under medical supervision. These sites aim to reduce the risk of overdose deaths, prevent the spread of diseases, and connect individuals with healthcare and support services. While controversial in some areas, evidence suggests that these sites can save lives and promote access to treatment and other support services. Housing First Approach: The Housing First approach prioritizes providing stable housing to individuals experiencing homelessness without requiring them to first address their addiction or mental health issues. This approach recognizes that having a safe and stable home is a fundamental step towards recovery and can help individuals address other challenges more effectively. Once housed, individuals can receive appropriate support services to address their addiction and other needs. Supportive Communities: Creating supportive communities, such as recovery-oriented housing or sober living environments, can provide a structured and supportive environment for individuals in recovery. These communities often have strict guidelines regarding substance use, peer support systems, and access to counseling and other supportive services. They aim to create a supportive and drug-free environment that facilitates recovery. Law Enforcement Diversion Programs: Instead of arresting and incarcerating individuals for drug-related offenses, some jurisdictions have implemented diversion programs where law enforcement redirects individuals to treatment and support services. These programs focus on rehabilitation rather than punishment, providing individuals with the opportunity to receive the help they need to address their addiction and reduce the likelihood of reoffending.

Ive been a night watchman on construction sites in nanaimo for several years, and about a dozen lications around the city. Although there is a homeless problem, it can be found in any town or city within this provence. Ive had very few bad encounters with any that find themselves on the street. Its the ones in trucks, that hide their company name at night that look for building supplues, that far outnumber the ones just trying to find some plastic, plywood or nails to make a shelter. We also have crews that clean up the empty camps on a regular basis, and a volunteer crew that helps out, i have been a part of that a couple times. Yes our climate atracts many from the colder areas of our country, but, 1 main reason nanaimo gets an influx of people more so than other areas, is the availability and access. Our ferrys port almost right in the downtown area, 1 passenger ferry actually does now , 1 is just a couple kms from downtown , and the 3rd is further to the south and not used as much by transients. So, gettting here is easy. To get to victoria, you arrive in a small town called Sydney, and would then need to bus 25kms into Victoria , or hitch hike illegally. So that makes Nanaimo a prime location. And, since it is so centrally located, those on the move can then safely thumb south towards Victoria, Duncan as well as many other small communities. Its so central that its easy to go to the west coast where there are many beautiful small communities , and, as such, as easy to head north towards courtney, campbell river , and more small communities beyond. It is paradise, so no matter where you find yourself, you will find less unfortunare people struggling to live and survive. Most communities if not all, have great food resourses and offer some shelter capabilities. What is lacking is immediate detox and treatment beds, as well as secondary housing for when those in need get out of treatment. So lets face it, ive traveled most of western canada, and have found homeless individuals in every town and city , its pandemic, and, it will get worse . Most people on the street are very considerate if you talk respectfully to them and not down to them or as an authority figure towards them. Most, are just sruggling to get through the day. So, maybe give them a hand, a coffee, a smile. Everyone will be better off for it. Yes the rents and food prices, gas ect are skyrocketing, but thats not because if the homeless, its creating more homeless. And its only the kind hearted that move into the area, with ideas and a heart to help that will help make this a better paradise than it already is. I consider my city very safe, and, there is not 1 neighbirhood that i am afraid to walk in at night , im 61 and of slight build , but walk in confidence. And not afraid to talk to those that find them selves less unfortunate than myself. Thx for your time Jay

Millstone, not Milestone. That's my neighbourhood and you are right to suggest it be avoided. Last year's shootings by my building were pretty scary and so were the fires. I live very close to where the shooting took place "scary" I'm glad the police finally cleared that section out, that kind of violence can not be tolerated, they said drones are now flown around that area so the element does not return, and on another note, why oh why did they decide to legalize hard drugs, the recent safe injection cite and so called safe supply were failing and legalizing the hard stuff is only adding fueling the fire....

It frustrates me how many people dismiss the homeless as being homeless "because of drug addiction" You realize a sizable portion of them are homeless because of our world's unfortunate conditions and not because of unreasonable decisions? Look at the housing prices and market here, it's not a wonder why many can't keep up, or just get a house People breaking into your stuff to "support their habits" most likely are trying to support their habit of, eating, as that's also an issue for a lot of them It disgusts me to hear about homeless camps being "taken care of" Where are they gonna go? They try to go in the forests where they can't be seen and people will still bully them out People also need to recognize that homelessness is a spiral. If you lose your home, you might also be losing access to showers and clean clothes, which means you'll do worse in interviews, which means you can't get a job, which means you literally can't do anything to get out of your situation With such conditions, it's also no wonder that some turn to drugs, I know I would want to try and forget about my shitty life the world has trapped me in It would be nice if we could exercise a little bit more sympathy around the homeless, is what I'm saying. Like that fenced up plot on Victoria Road is just cruel. The fence is just as much of an "eyesore" as the homeless people. We need to be kinder.

@waynemerlo7448 I've thought about it! Definitely have done my part to help where I can, giving out food, offering conversation and such. It really drives home how little thought you put into this situation by making a reply like this, acting like telling someone to exercise empathy is an own lmfao "There's a bad thing happening? Why don't you fix it?" Hate to break it to you, but that's a question for governments, not citizens. Affordable/free housing and better community aid would fix a lot of the conflict here!

Keep giving them free hand outs with open arms they will keep coming.Maybe take them to a remote area contain them and help stop drug an other addictions and teach them how to work .If they were supporting themselves they would feel better about themselves and would have less time in each day to cause problems. I just had my truck side window broken they stole a $200 grinder but broke a $300 side window. The truck was in underground parking 1.5 blocks from the police station. The cops listened to my story then said all they could do was give me a claim number so insurance would pay????ICBC insurance Deductable was $287.The grinder was new in a box Visa paid for that.I call all this enableing nobody is accountable for their actions any more

The homeless, their drug addictions, and their inability to behave like normal human beings, is the issue. Creating more “facilities” for them only normalizes the problem.
