Hello and welcome to what is probably the biggest lighting channel on RU-vid! I have been collecting lights ever since I was a toddler and have continued doing so to this day! I'm not sure why but lighting has always fascinated me. I have an extensive collection of light bulbs, light fixtures and everything in-between! While my channel is mostly lighting, you will also find videos of many other interests. My other hobbies include, desk fans, ceiling fans, apple computers, and electronics. On a more personal level I enjoy creating art, drawing and expressing myself through my fursona, Mercovay, if you're interested in learning more about my furry side, you can find a link in the links section below. I really enjoy creating content here on RU-vid and sharing my life with all of you! Thank you for stopping by, I hope you subscribe and join me on my journey through life!

While visiting a Home Depo during my work travels today, I happened to spot a 175 watt mercury vapor bulb on the shelf. I always like to see what kind of incandescents and HIDs are still on the shelves in different parts of the country.

Interesting stumbling across this video. When I was a kid, I found a mercury vapor lamp and fixture, took it home. Had it in my bedroom, that was In 1967. I collected all kinds of light bulbs and flash lights. Brings back good memories

I always use electronic ballasts with LPS. They have a great PF (over 0.9) and the setup runs at the rated wattage. I know many enthusiasts don't like them but I rather choose convenience and lower power usage over authenticity.

I have cases of those NOS. Really love used ones though as no 2 are exactly the same with high hours.

That is a super cool G-40 LED filament light bulb! At my True Value here in the Mid-West. I bought two nice light fixtures. One was only $2.00 and the other one was free! They were getting rid of them so they can get more up to date light fixtures. I don't know if you have a True Value near you? But if you do. It is definitely worth looking into. The light fixtures go quickly though. Thanks again for sharing!

Your lamp was manufactured between November 1975 and August 1976. The 2 numbers below the 175 are the date code. If you could make out the 2nd number next to the 7, you could know the exact month.

Most of the "enclosed globe" style CFLs I saw here in my country are of the u-shaped tubular design. I have never seen the one with the spiral tube

LED dimming works by Pulse Width Modulation, rather than voltage reduction to allow sufficient voltage for the driver circuitry, although some can be dimmed by Constant Current Reduction type dimmers!

It was 1996 when my mother sent me that very same mercury light from a store here in California. Well, I am a woman of two sons, and after I pleaded for two years to install it in my garage, guess what happened? It's in the same spot where I set it 30 years ago. Never used, never moved, and never opened. My mother has been dead for 15 years, and I'm now 74 years old and just paid off my mortgage. My sons are too large and in their late 50's, so they laughed at the thought of trying to install it now. I just rediscovered it last week, and this video gives me hope that it still can be used. All my neighbors put up solar lights, but I hope this "baby" can light up my 55 by 126 property nicely. Bless your heart for posting this video. 😊 I ❤ it.

I'd love to find an led filament bulb with some back projection for an even spread of light in those ceiling lights. But no, seems all the bulbs have a small A frame of filaments regardless of how big the bulb is. Incandescent bulbs used to have their filaments spread out in a disc shape.

I used to see those light fixtures all the time in Mexico during early 2000's up to the 2010's. I always thought they looked cool and futuristic. I would love to install some in my future house if I could ever afford one. lol

Coated HPS bulbs are rare in America, seen some wall packs with coated HPS but that’s about it. Not even sure if most companies make them anymore. I think Sylvania and Philips discontinued their diffused HPS lamp line, I think the only company still making them is GE. Coated MH is more common but they aren’t a consumer thing, they are more of a specialty since all consumer MH lamps I’ve seen are clear. Coated MV is still very common, most MV lamps are discontinued, only GE still makes them I think. Feit might make them still but I believe Philips and Sylvania models have been discontinued. When I see a coated sylvania lamp of this design I would probably assume a PSMH lamp because coated HPS is so rare. I prefer LEDs over HID. Coated MH used to be quite common and were mainly used in commercial indoor MH lights (such as HID cans, low bays, and high bays). Most outdoor MH bulbs are clear but I’ve seen coated ones used outside sometimes.

The “wrapped frame” lifeguards were a cost cutting move during the peak of the adoption of these in cheap yard blaster fixtures for residential use. ONLY the 175 watt lamps has this frame. The 250 watt version was still full frame, and was in the same BT-28 glass. These are good lamps, but those wrapped frames are crap and typical of the infiltration of crappy Philips when they bought out Westinghouse in the early 1980’s. It was a bean counter move and stupid. The later ED-28 shape versions by Philips were even worse! Weak frames with weak tack welds, no arc tube support straps, or wrapping the frame around the arc tube pinch seals, and TINY electrodes that blackened the arc tube fast and caused early failure. Utter crap!! The phosphor coated /DX and also /N Style tone lamps in 175 watt also used the crummy wrapped frame as well, starting around 1982-83. Cheers!

Coated high pressure sodium bulbs are rare! Almost never seen one in person, seen a very few. I don’t even find coated metal halide that common these days, it’s usually now either clear MH or LED. I used to see a lot of coated MH lamps, they were mainly used in indoor lighting. I mainly see clear MH lamps. Almost every HPS I see has a clear lamp in it. I only seen coated ones in those old wall packs which probably have original bulbs, and one appeared cycling, I think I saw one still working in another wall pack. Coated MH lamps, were mainly used in indoor lighting where MH was present, such as high bay lights or those recessed MH cans. Maybe they used coated metal halide for indoors because they produced less glare than a clear lamp. A lot of high bay fixtures I remember used coated MH lamps. Now I’m seeing more of those with clear bulbs.

Coated high pressure sodium lamps are very rare, never seen many in service, the clear ones are everywhere tho, but these coated versions are extremely rare. I can see listings for these online, but never seen one in real life expect for a few used in wall packs. But overall, coated HPS is RARE. Coated metal halide used to be common, not as common anymore, the coated HPS lamps were mainly used in indoor metal halide fixtures, LEDs are taking over tho, don’t really see that many coated MH anymore, though I see plenty of clear ones. Coated mercury vapor is still everywhere. I used to see lots of coated MH back in the day. Those were mainly used in indoor lighting.

back in the early 1970's, around 1973, these bulbs were mostly used in table and floor lamps without shades, and the lamps themselves, were made from chrome tubing, and the furniture was also chrome tubing with white cushions . very 2001 space Odyssey inspired . stylish and high end for the time.😀
