Indeed, average homo sapiens at this time was between 1.77-1.83, studies on the matter determine that our anatonomy was much more streched to survive in África, higher bodies of water disperse heat easier, also these peoples had a diet pretty much based on meat, it is prooven that meat and specially red meat is vital to your growth, studies indicate that the average height would start to decrease after our ancestors learned agriculture and had substitued a more meat based diet for cereal based.

for the most part this was pretty good. i think its important to note that Hiero II, who was the king of syracuse, had chosen to ally with the romans in place of the carthaginians following the romans' arrival to syracuse, which is why they had been supplying the roman army. i also believe this is word for word the wikipedia page on the battle, which im fine with because scripts are hard, but it leads to some confusion like this. i do recommend formatting and writing your own script in the future, it adds personality and pays off when you improve at it. and its technically plagiarism (if this is genuinely word for word, im not checking right now) which isnt morally accepted on youtube in my experience. good video though, its quick and relatively easy to follow 👍

In 2008, I drove around Northern Spain and headed into the Picos de Europa. My mate and I spent a night in Riaño, before we drove to the Cares gorge in the morning. We had planned to walk the entire gorge, but my friend suffered from fear of heights, so we turned back after a while. I stupidly had forgotten to fill the tank, so we were running perilously low on petrol. Instead of driving back to Riaño, I decided to chance it, and I basically just held the clutch in most of the way and rolled down mountain roads with the engine idling. We reached Cangas de Onís, and filled the tank. We had planned to go up to Covadonga from there, but by that time, we were a bit tired and instead decided to push on.

This was not really the point. The Peninsula War was favourable for Wellington, because the streets were really bad. The Brits with the Royal Navy could supply Wellington at every harbour, Wellington occupied. Boney's supplies came on worse streets through many mountains with the guerillas waiting. The Continental Blockad never worked. Boney's armies marched in British staff/cloth. Boney's failure was implemented by his incapability to evaluate his admirals. Brueys & Villeneuve were lazy cowards. With Villaret-Joyeuse in command the average seaman Nelson would got more problems, than he already had.
@Imperium-YT
@Imperium-YT 28 дней назад
Indeed it was favourable for Wellington, we refer to that in the end. If Portugal had accepted the continental blockade and follow Napoleon´s wishes, Great Britain would never land safely on the continent, they would wave the Portuguese, Spanish and French fleet bombarding them everytime they tried any landing. This is how Portugal saved Great Britain and then Great Britain in exchanged saved Portugal for their and honouring the treaty signed in 1386 that made them allies since then. You could say that Britain could get commerce from other colonies and not actually drain out, but USA closed their harbours to Great Britain aswell leading to the 1812 between UK and US, then you might say they could get from Africa or India their supplies from the colonies but they had either to go to the Atlantic or cross the Gribaltar Strait and then the Suez canal and he would have to face Portugal, Spain and France and that would not be possible. Indeed, the Brits had a crushing naval victory in Trafalgar but that was the French fleet , its very unlikely the Brits could take on the Spanish, Portuguese and French fleets at the same time. So Portugal really saved UK from alot of unnecessary battles that had no assurance of victory.

@@Imperium-YT During the Napoleonic Wars the game at Sea was already over with the wrong slackers in command, anyway how many good ships were built in Frenchie shipyards. The situation during the War of Independence was much more severe for Britain. The Frenchie & the Spaniard king were not smart enough to develop (according the lectures of von Clausewitz) the political will to crush Britain for once & forever. In this period the allied men'o'wars doubled the number of the Brit ships of the line. The British defeat in the channel would have been inevitable. The Portuguese court in 1808 was not really that powerful. The a few Portuguese men'o'wars were always under the control of the Royal Navy. Boney had another chance to defeat the Brits at sea. But technically he was not up to date, he sent Robert Fulton away, denied to support Fulton's projects.

@@Imperium-YT most historians ive read seem to think the blackade did far more damage to france than england, i dont think portugals intervention in this way saved britain. britain had access to global markets, europe was a powderkeg and had much reduced access to trade. portugal was useful for britain to wear napoleon down and get allies on our side by breaking his aura of invincibility but save britain? not sure about that
@Imperium-YT
@Imperium-YT 19 дней назад
@@raccoonboi969 Well, we all know it took the whole of Europe and many coalitions to defeat France, and Britain could only top France in naval warfare, friends and generals close to Napoleon confirm it was his intention to first cripple the British economy, then invade with a huge fleet provided by every country under Napoleon´s thumb, and Britain would never be able to fight off naval coalition from France, Portugal, Spain, Austria, Russia, Sweden and more. You said they were open to global trade, but were they really? The USA refused to make trade with Britain during this time leading to the war of 1812, also with everyone joining the blockade it would mean that Great Britain would have to cross the Atlantic and perhaps face the Portuguese, Spanish and France fleets together, in Europe, Carabbean, South America, India, Oceania and Asia. The english fleet would get destroyed piece by piece by piece, and they would have no naval defence against France and Napoleon would send his Grande Armee across the channel and take over Great Britain, as France was without doubt the best military ground force in the world at the time. But this could only work, if everyone complied. Portugal by denying the blockade besides saving Britain from dying from starvation and also from loosing their fleet trying to cross the Atlantic, also contributed for the other european countries like Austria and Russia took take up arms and fight Napoleon, because no one simply had heart to oppose him.

In term of facts, this video was pretty reasonable. Though if it were my own script for a youtube audience, i would have accentued some facts and relations over others. But that is ok. We each have our point of views. What can be interesring is some of the translated words that seem confusing without more context. But to me, what jumped more to my attention, was the contrast of how some portuguese words and names were so well pronunciated alongside other portuguese words and names were so foreign. This does show that you did invest a good amount of effort in this, but how even then we are always missing so much, no matter our good will or knowlegde. Overall i personally would rate positively this video. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for this. The Renaissance period is one of the eras I have the least knowledge of. When I saw the "Shogun" series, I couldn't understand why the Portuguese were enemies of England since they had an alliance since the 14th century. With Portugal ruled by the Spanish King at this time, it makes sense.

Indeed, many people like yourself dont understand why some things happened the way they did, because in our school system when it comes to history sadly, to they seem to overlook some topics that might seem small compared to bigger events but are sometimes the key factor to a certain result. We try to show people the less known details that were hidden from us and the only way to know about them its to take interest and look for it, but how can you look for something you are not aware of, right? This is what we offer, knowledge about lesser known events. Hope you liked and stay for more 😃

@Imperium-YT Yeah, I am really trying to plug the gap between the Middle Ages and the Age of Enlightenment (1450-1700s). I have read some about the Reconquista, and Roman Spain, and the Peninsular War during the Napoleonic Wars. The 30-years war and the Habsburg dominance over Europe is still something I need to learn more about. I don't know if you do battle videos, but I would love to see videos on the border battles between Portugal and Spain in the 1640s.

@@Zajuts149 Well, if you are a history enthusiast then the Iberian Peninsula surely it´s the best place for you, this is a very contested landscape. There are records of military campaigns into the region since the days of the Phoeneceans who ironically founded Olisipo (Lisbon), Carthage invading during the Punic Wars, then the Romans struggling to conquer the region for 224 years, then the Germanic Migrations ending up with 300 years of Visigothic rule, then the 800 yeas of Reconquista with the muslim powers, the foundation of the modern Iberian countries and the struggle between the Iberians for control of peninsula right up to the Napoleonic Invasions. And indeed the next video that we are going to post in saturday at 12:00 GMT +0, will be about Napoleonic Era. Stay tuned 😀

2:32: "The Spanish third, which was military order known as the elite of Spanish troops..." I think you got lost a little bit in auto-translation here. I assume that "The Spanish third" refers to the 'Tercio' pike and shot formation(a regiment in modern terms). I also assume that the "military order" here refers to the name of the Tercio. I'm not fluent in Spanish, but Ordenes Militares, perhaps? I here assume that the military orders referred to are the military brotherhood ordes that existed in the Iberian Peninsula, the Orders of Santiago, Calatrava, and possibly also Alcantara? A better sentence in English would be: "The 'Military Orders' Tercio(or Regiment if you want to be modern), the elite of the Spanish Army..."😊

I assume your are Iberian yourself and you know we don´t get alot of spotlight when compared to France, England, Germany and many more.
