Welcome to the Faint Divinities! We're a small group of friends who will be play-testing the Open Beta of the new TTRPG: Daggerheart from Critical Role's Publishing House: Darrington Press!

We'll be live-streaming actual-play sessions of the system and table-talks to discuss the system on twitch and will be uploading to RU-vid: what we love, what we think could be tweaked, and more.

Your choice of Undead Queen has brought to mind one of the main cast of our Epic 1-20 D&D campaign: Lady Melancholia D'Orcusonne, Arch-Mage of Galdonead, Founder of the Devil's Advocates adventuring guild, and savior of the World of Amisis. Yes, She is both a Necromancer and a Lich. Interpreting these questions in light of my Second Generation Charcter Esper D'Orcusonne is a trip.

Yay for cute kitty at the start. :D 25:00 Yeah it's kind of unclear on the Rogue hiding. I'd say though that since it's use leads to advantage on an attack, as you guys say it really seems like the cost is really a combat based thing to get advantage on attack. Because that'd just be silly to say Rogues are the only ones who could ever 'hide', and only at the cost of stress. 1:39:00 Duck board? Is that like a crime board, but where you put pictures of ducks? O.o

So many kitties!!! Yeah, I still think the hiding may need a little bit of a shift since it doesn't have a roleplay element included but I honestly didn't even think about it until we came across it...

I love how the system encourages interactive world building. The questions the gm asks about connections and for the players to name things they are looking for or know about the forest - it's a great way to create buy-in to the story.

I agree SO hard!!! It's so fun!! I think I struggle it a bit more when we get into the weeds of serious story beats (can't have them describe a room without a window if I need baddies to fly in that window, ya know? But the collaborative nature is fun in that way of it forces me to improves more with my WORLD instead of just NPCs and events and I'm having so much fun with the challenge. Plus, it really shoe strings player engagement which is beautiful <3

lulz 39:00 was about to say how do you roll 15 on a d12? hehe. 1:54:00 Should there have been fear (or hope) on that? I think reaction rolls don't generate the things. 2:19:00 I would read it like this... Dwarf: "Increased Fortitude: You can spend 3 Hope to halve incoming physical damage." And then there is... "Calculating Damage After rolling your damage dice, add all their values together then add any modifiers to determine the result. The GM will mark the corresponding Hit Points based on that damage. Tip: There’s a difference in this game between damage and hit points. Damage is the result of your damage roll, including your damage dice and modifiers. Hit Points reflect how hard that damage affects the creature who’s taking it; the number of Hit Points a creature marks depends on factors such as their Damage Threshold, armor, resistances, and immunities." Thus the difference is terminology of "damage" vs. "hit points". So the "damage" is the rolled number, before figuring out the "hit point" threshold.

Animal friend: OMG the otter terriers??? Wow. 10/10 I love these babies Damp Wood: it definitely can, but it does have to be treated usually. Most of us in this group grew up in a VERY humid environment with a lot of lakes and... man can wood rot fast if it's always slightly damp. If you want wood to last, keep it dry, keep it treated or submerge it fully. That damp stuff? Killer. Accent work: Definitely tried to lean Cajun with it - a lot of my family are Cajun! But honestly even for me, who grew up in/around Louisiana, the accents get a little jumbled sometimes. Definitely a weird one to pull out of the hat!! LILOO DALLAS MULTIPASS (absolutely crying haha)

@@TheFaintDivinities Hum, didn't know that about wood. I'm west coast, so we barely get any rain out here. Though it can be super foggy sometimes. Yeah I think I heard there are something like 50 different dialects down there in Louisiana, so Cajun is often a mix of several?

OMG me too!!! As a GM it always came up like... okay, so you want to do something clever in this combat, but we've established that you've gone so FERAL at this point that you can't even feel pain... how do we address this in the RP? I love that this game puts the RP first because I think (hope?) that it'll help GMs/Players avoid those weird issues where the mechanics don't make sense in the story. Ugh. Sorry for the vent. OK... I'm not playing, and so this is not an informed theory, but the idea came to me. This is regarding the help advantage and its impact on Hope conflict. What if when giving advantage you used 1 Hope to add the D6, but had the option to use a 2nd Hope to spend that D6 on the Hope dice? That way you could still get the mechanic, but you had to spend 2 Hope, and could only make back 1. On the off chance you think it's a decent idea, could you pass it on?

Ohhhhh wow! Hmmmmm.... I think it's interesting for sure! I think it's a little tricky sounding with the two-spend actions but I do still like the idea of having SOME way to trigger adding the d6 to the Hope as long as it's very expensive. Maybe even spending like 3 stress to do it would be impactful enough... Remember if you ever have ideas that you think are amazing, I love hearing them but you really gotta GET TO THOSE SURVEYS!!! You don't have to play to submit surveys!

But, personally I'm guessing at this point they are targeting a GenCon 2025 release. So, with giving a few months for polish, to add in any missing lore, to actually physically print the physical copies, they probably are still a year off before they close beta and say 'ok we are done and getting ready to print.' I get why they did the change with advantage/disadvantage. I thought though with 1.3 it seemed like it would have been 'easier' to do roll 2 of whichever. So for advantage roll 2 hope dice, for disadvantage roll 2 fear. I had a mixed background character idea for D&D - half half elf, half halfling, so he's a "quarter elf quarterling" Yay for fun girls getting the network back. Yay for wanderborn pack. Having been in some near death things, I think there should be stress if you reduce damage to 0. Feels weird to be totally zero. 50:00 dirty boys dirty boys, what'chu gonna do... ? 59:00 The unstoppable change does make a lot of sense. In every stream I've watched that had feedback they were always saying they activated it and then effectively felt like they should do nothing because doing something ticked it down and removed the benefit. With this change it encourages them to stay active. 1:02:00 Good for adding a guaranteed proficiency increase. I watched a few theorycrafting videos and they said it was effectively a forced choice that you had to upgrade it several times. So now that issue should be removed. 1:06:00 Evasion tank is totally a thing in DH. Now, ranged evasion tank, not really. The Warrior and Guardian aren't really at all currently suited for ranged tanking. (I thought about trying to build one and it just did not work.) 1:10:00 (Armor) yeah, if I ever play a "wizard" idea I have for a character, by default whatever armor he uses would actually just be a rune marked metal wristband. When he'd be hit a magical barrier would shimmer and a number of runes would disappear. (Effectively the armor count.) So, in down time his "repairing" the armor is re-enchanting the band. With another character idea I have he's a re-skinned Clank guardian. He is a ghost in animated platemail. So, yeah, he's using that "Bare Bones" (Valor) ability, because he effectively is the armor. 1:11:00 It's funny you bring up scaring as armor layers. Scales giving a +1 to armor score is one of the new ancestry features of Drakona. 1:20:00 I could totally see a deck based around an idea of 'after you use this ability (once per session) replace it with the x card.' And it's like a magic domain that shifts what it does on use. They also effectively confirmed more classes (likely Gunslinger and Monk) were in the works during the answer of this question. 1:25:00 I'd say don't totally fastforward through the levels. Do like an extended session zero to get some highlights of what they did to inform your choices. Otherwise they might just go totally off the rails an not realllly be representative of a character of that level.

@@TheFaintDivinities I’ll have to check again when I get a chance maybe later today, but a big issue is that there aren’t a lot of options. I think he went guardian? From that I recall off the top of my head there is natural armor, so you can avoid any evasion loss, but it got nerfed so it may not be as good as before. There is the +1 evasion from simian background he could swipe now. The new Gambison armor is another +1. And somewhere, maybe in bone, there was something like ‘when targeted from range gain x evasion’. I’ll for sure check when I get a chance, but depending if I get a thing or not I may be busy today with some stuff.

@@TheFaintDivinities Ok as kind of expected, still no software license that I need to do stuff and things with, so I have funsie research time… If I recall he’s guardian, so I’ll go off of that base. Lv 0 Swipe “Nimble” from simiah for +1 Evasion. (Drop Luckbender. +1 Evasion all the time would likely be far more helpful than a once per session ability, especially since we are trying to max Evasion.) Recommend: Stalwart subclass. While they reduced your numbers here, any gain is good so we can get that ceiling of taking 0 damage. Also, this gives you the ability to mark Stress as an armor slot, so having lower armor isn’t as punishing as long as you can keep that clear. Lv 1 Bare Bones (Valor) - Got a bit of a nerf with 1.4 since it’s now a flat number of 3+Level, but that’s pretty solid since it starts at 4. Now, that will possibly be not as great at higher levels once special armor starts dropping, but technically I think a Shield does not count as “armor” since it is listed in the “secondary weapon” category and not “armor”. So definitely also grab the biggest shield you can manage. Lv 3 Scramble (Blade) - Once per short rest isn’t the best, but it does avoid damage entirely. It also states ‘when an enemy would deal damage to you’, so you can wait to hear that big number attack you know you won’t be able to reduce much and be like ‘yikes, now is the time to burn this.’ But don’t forget that base Stalwart subclass feature of marking a couple of stress in addition to a couple of armor if you really need to. You can mark all the things you want/need. Though if there ever is something hitting that hard you probably want to run away very quickly. The level 5 upgrade to Stalwart is great, so I don’t know I’d recommend a split, but… Ranger split taking the Bone domain… (Remember, any split class ability is at half, so double it's level for when you could take it.) Lv 1 Nimble - Add half your Agility score to your Evasion (rounded up). Not huge unless you’ve been increasing Agility, and this is something you keep in your loadout, so that might make things feel very tight since you are already holding Bare Bones. I See It Coming - When targeted from range mark a stress to add a d4 to Evasion. Not great to have another thing adding stress since you are doing that with Stalwart armor slots, but if you’ve bumped it up a bit it should be ok. Lv 2 Ferocity - When you do damage spend 2 hope to increase Evasion by the hp dealt to an enemy. Gotta keep booping enemies, but while you do you are more Evasive. Lv 3 Brace - Not sure it’s worth taking because you’re already blocking off 2 of your spots, but it could further reduce incoming damage. While not Evasion specifically, I’m kind of a fan of the support options of splitting into Seraph. (However I’m still not 100% certain you can “choose” to use your original spell casting trait on Seraph spells. It’s base one is Strength, which isn’t one a lot would naturally build into) Base ability would let you clear stress as needed or reduce damage. Subclass recommendation: Divine Wielder. Smash people in the face at range babieeeeee. Also you get that heal 2 points or 2 stress once per long rest. Lv 1 Mending touch - Again, a way to keep that stress down or hp up. Lv 2 Healing hands - Moar heals / stress recovery. Lv 3 Second wind - Lots of hp / stress recovery on hitting an enemy. Lv 4 Life ward - I mean, if you have the ability to do this it could be huge. It isn’t lost until it’s spent, you choose to move it, or a long rest, so just drop that on someone at the start of ‘the day’, then move it later if need be.

Another great video! I'm curious as to how much will change tomorrow with 1.4. I expect Stress to be re-worked again. Advantage will hopefully remain the same. Also, I'm really looking forward to the level 2-5 scenario! But before I get to play that with my home group, I will run version 1.4 of The Sablewood Messenger at our nerd club on May 18th.

(Separated comment, because reasons.) Just remember, just because a class is traditionally X doesn't mean that's how you have to play it. I have a "bard" who specifically is NOT built like a traditional bard. The super short version of his backstory is he has no memories from before about age 40, and now he is in his late 70s/early 80s Drakona, old somewhat shakey/wandering voice, partly hunched over, scar on his head which oddly sometimes faintly glows. Since the ruins he's been a college professor of the arcane (so 30-40 years), and is now (forcefully) semi retired and just helps with magical research in the field. (His memory is going, thus why he can be level 1.) So, mechanically he's Bard Wordsmith. His starting 2 abilities would be Inspirational Words (Grace) and Book of Illiat (Codex.) So he thinks he's a wizard (and for funsies if a group insisted that I tell them my class that's what I'd say), because in his earliest memories he 'awoke' in a ruined city and the only thing that wasn't torn to shreds on him was a large spellbook hanging on a belt on his side. Consider a high Presence person who uses spells and has a history of encouraging people, that's effectively what he's doing. :)

Remember, proficiency can also boost abilities. Anything that references a die without a number is actually proficiency. So “d6” is “proficiency x d6” as opposed to something like “1d6”. Honestly that was one of my feedbacks. When I heard that I was like wut? It should be noted as something like “Pd6”, so we know it’s proficiency based. Here is a super interesting weird thing on bubble vs mark. About 100 years ago as part of a Psychology/ Sociology degree I made a dating survey. People were given this individually with no instructions. ALL the female people bubbled in the bubbles. ALL the males crossed or Xed through it. (This was before non-binary.) More seriously in other countries’bubble’ may not translate as cleanly.

Proficiency: absolutely! I wanted to explain it succinctly but it definitely has more things it powers. And I actually gave the same feedback in one of my surveys! same formula and everything! Pd6 haha that's so funny. I do think the verbiage now is clearer in most cases in the manuscript and guides but it was difficult in 1.2 The bubble thing is fascinating! Do you want to know something really interesting to me? I'm a female and I don't bubble! I put checks - so I don't fall into either category of bubbling OR marking with X's. But I think that's just from filling out so many character sheets - bubbling is so hard to erase completely lol Good point re: translations!

The weirder part is since these were college students I'd have assumed they were used to bubbling in circles from standardized tests. That's what really blew my mind. I wonder now if such an unexpected result would still happen. I'd expect not. (And of course I'd have way more options for all the preferences now. :) ) Yeah if I were to ever play DH (or I suppose Candella) I'd never bubble anything. I think it was about 3 days after the first test release I made a 'tracker sheet' (posted in the discord) so I could either put a die to represent the thing in a spot for the thing, or to just add some kind of tokens. (Like Amazon has 'colored gem' packs of like, I think the one I marked is 100, for like $15. I'd use red for HP, gray for stress, probably gold for armor, etc.) But then I've kind of been doing a token thing forever. A few years ago when I could do AL / had some games I was playing in I'd always make cards for my abilities. Things like spiritual weapon or bardic inspiration I'd just drop a card on the table to remind me they are active.

Just seen half, maybe more comments later, but for what it's worth I'm very thankful I can say 'like Critical Role' now when describing what kind of game I'm looking for. I'm usually a DM, and have been DMing in that style for like 35+ years? *winces at old* Way more off than on, but still. That's been similar to my style as long as I've been gaming. I would agree the game might be in competition with D&D if it were seen on a shelf together. But I see this as more in competition with other narrative games, like Fate or Vampire the Masquerade than directly competing with D&D. I'd say, and sure I've done many systems over the past 40+ years gaming, that the only tough part of character creation for Daggerheart is the experiences. Which honestly can really just boil down to a better explanation. Say, 'think of a previous job the character has done', or, 'what special skill does the character have.' and I think that would be enough. I can come up with character concepts, stats, and experience off the top of my head. Sure, I own the 5e books and am fairly familiar with it, but there is zero chance I could come up with a D&D character in my head, sit down with the book and be ready in 5 minutes like I would with Daggerheart. A character is a minimum of a 1 hour investment even if I have a solid character idea. ~ 26:00 Why is the camera flipped? Adventure's League / Pathfinder Society are a HUGE undertaking. They would have to create an entire new division and put in a lot of work for that to happen. 44:00 I preferred the old stress system. It made sense that combat and failure stressed you out. I get positive uses like Rogue hide or Fairy flight, but only having it for a positive resource seems a bit odd. Also I still wonder if the low hp threshold being 1 makes the system too deadly. 53:00 The domain card swap feels odd to me. Haven't played, so can't speak on it from that perspective is, mechanically, it feels like every character of X class is effectively the same as every other one since they could just swap an ability at any given time. Effectively that means they always have all abilities and could adjust. I'd much prefer a system where there were 30% more abilities for all classes and you could only swap during a long rest. Even then though some of those just don't feel right to me someone could just 'forget or remember' how to do something. With spells, sure, preparing makes sense. But something like Rogue lv 3 chokehold... how would they suddenly forget how to do that? If they are going to let everyone do everything I'd rather see it like 4x the Stress pool and just make all card uses cost Stress and have them all the time or something. (Though for distinctness I'd probably still prefer a bigger pool where your character knows x and you don't swap the things.) For the surveys, yeah, you can just put "n/a" in a lot of those spots if you just want to submit feedback on a thing. Looking forward to the level up. :)

Cam flip: unfortunately, I think the default in Discord is to flip to what we usually see in mirrors and I am a haver-of-an-asymmetrical face so it unfortunately like really freaks me out to see my flipped face so I always leave it that way BUT I think this is beginning to push me to get comfy with the other flip haha AL/PS: I do know it would be SUCH an effort, but I really think it would be worth it! I think they could even subcontract it out to a group and plan to take low revenue for it for the sake of marketing the system. But of course, I trust their brains - they're the creative geniuses, I just know what I have loved in the past. Stress: 1.3 really did take a gamble w/stress and I just don't think it's quite right. I hope we get to see a big flip in this in 2 (!!!) days... even if it means learning a brand new thing lol Domain Cards: I have to stand by this one. But maybe it helps to clarify: the classes don't get every card in their domain - they have to pick them just like the spells in DnD 5e. So of the total idk 50-75 cards a class has access to, they will only end up with around 10ish I think? So I think the characters will still feel distinct. So then it just comes down to the prepared Hand vs. backup Vault and I LOVE that mechanic... though I haven't actually played with it... so we'll have to see. Level up coming tomorrow!!! It was wild... I can't wait for everyone to hear Gimbo's new experience addition!

@@TheFaintDivinities Ohhhhh. I think I misunderstood what the "vault" was then. So you are saying the "vault" is what they've picked and then replaced? If so I totally misunderstood that. I was thinking the vault was any card you didn't pick. So any level 1 Rogue could swap out to any other Rogue deck card (aka any Midnight or any Grace). Limited to what they've previously picked is totally different. I guess that makes more sense then. That is more of an 'I've been here before' kind of path. Though that then does beg the question of; if someone is happy with the 5 they've picked, are they then limited by NOT having something in the vault? I guess mechanically you could just vault a thing for later and 'not pick it today', but still. Though I still feel like there should be about 30% more cards for every existing deck. Though I suppose that could feel less so as more classes branch out, though that forces someone to split class. Like clearly Gunslinger and Monk are missing. And if there are guns, which there are, then we are also clearly missing a swashbuckler class. (I mean, sure, I can force my former Pirate Captain into Rogue / Seraph split, but it probably would never fit as correctly as an actual Swashbuckler class.)

Yes! So the way it works is that as you progress through levels, you accrue more and more Domain cards, but you only have access to those cards - all non-selected ones don't exist for your character in any way. Then, of the selected cards, at some point you will have more than 5 cards at which point you have to pick each day/rest which are 'active' (your hand) and which are 'inactive' (your vault). During play, you can pull items from your vault into your hand by paying the cost (in stress) and switching the cards between your hand and vault. I think the vault will probably end up being for heavy cards you rarely need such as the card that allows you once per the life of a character to perform the revive action and then is removed from the game FOREVER and is not replaced with another card. Crazy, right? I am excited for more cards at some point, but I also think that and the extended class lists will probably come out in future iterations! Gotta save some tricks up their sleeves, y'know?

Ok ok ok Yeah, I saw in someone's vid they mentioned slotting the dailies (things that buff and then can't be used again) and then immediately swapping out. Seemed kinda haxy to me.

Great discussion! Admittedly, I have only run one session so far. I felt combat was more dynamic than in most other games. The players focused a lot on helping each other out and doing stuff together. Yes, half of the players generated the majority of the Action tokens, but I wouldn't say they were hogging the spotlight. Other players did more stuff out of combat, so it evened out over the course of the session.

I mean realistically we've only run three! I keep forgetting this game has literally been out for less than 2 months! It feels like forever ago haha I totally agree about the dynamic nature of combat - and as a GM, I found it to be SO much fun. And those Tag Team Rolls really are good at getting people who haven't acted as much completely engaged in what's going on. I really am trying to be as critical (ha!) about the system as I can be, but realistically I just love it so much...

I don't know what routes you go about but depending on where you are, a lot of the time you can find Discord channels or Facebook groups for TTRPG or Board Games or Nerdy stuff in general that has people more likely to be interested! That's how I always end up making friends wherever I move that are willing to play board games with!

Hope you get a group together! I'm so happy my little home group agreed to try it out. Especially my teenager and their friend loved it (and me)! I'm going to run an open table on May 18, when our nerd club has its 5-year anniversary. It will be fun trying the game out on relative strangers.
