The key is intention If you take a loan to go to school and for most of us that is the only way to pay for university level education, I would agree not haram because your intention is to go to school and provide a living for your family Also people who understand finance know that interest rate is just the price to exchange money today for a future period How is it any different than back in the days for example when we exchange 1 bag of sugar in exchange for 2 bags of salt..: what is the fair price / exchange, people just agree to a price and do an exchange Similarly interest rate is something you agree to for a transaction or exchange It’s haram when you are ripping someone off intentionally or putting.them in a very hard position, unfortunately a lot of people take on more debt than they can afford and run into issues Think of a grocery store that sells chicken, what is the fair price $15, $20 $8 etc for a whole chicken, it costs money to do business and same goes for the banks Plus islamic banking is doing same thing, taking a spread on the loan they give… it’s just that conventional banks can achieve economies of scale / have diversified business model
