I don't use this channel anymore, but I've left a few videos up. 🙂 These days I work in weather+climate science, and you can find me on instagram + twitter/X at @alicejanelake
Enjoyed your discussion....My Master's is in Literature... while very different....your discussion brought memories of my time studying. It isn't easy... the Art's & the Sciences, but, a cliche...says, the " hard" makes it great...i.e " the education on life" and resilience. peace. good luck...
"someone talking Latin at me"!! LOL.... the "at"!!! Alice, you and I are really different on this one :p I have found a knowing a bit of Greek and Latin is useful for understanding some words used in physics. And yes, personally I like traditions, and I imagine Oxford wouldn't be the same without the Latin spoken at ceremonies. :) Finally, thank you so much for this video, for being so honest. I really enjoyed it. And the video is not too long. Personally, I would have actually liked it to be even longer. Details about your experience that may seem unimportant to you may be very important to other people.
Why did you delete your other study with me videos🙄 I loved watching those videos every now and then..they motivated me to study😅 If its possible please re-upload those videos 😊
Yes, I cleared out some of my old videos - sorry! I don't use youtube anymore (I actually work full-time as a scientist now) so it felt weird having people be able to see things I made years ago 😄
hot tip: if you're going to comment stuff like this you might not want to do it with your real name, especially when we have mutual connections on linkedin 😉
In most universities in the US, I think General Relativity isn't taught in undergrad classes. I was glad to learn that it's usually taught at the undergrad level in the UK.
I've been writing more & more about the eventual collapse of humanity in large part to spending so much time witnessing & hearing from the intellectually impoverished. I need to hear more from people like her... to feel hopeful. It's amazing what our species is capable of learning, and how little so many choose to.
Hi Alice, I'm in the first year of my quantum physics degree and I'm struggling to decide how to absorb and understand the lecture content, do I take notes on the slides or do I create revision flashcards from the lecture slides? I'm behind on my lectures due to struggling to find an effective method of note-taking and revising. I feel like note-taking is good but it takes way too much time also is it passive revision? would really like to hear your opinion on this
This has been an eye-opener and thank you for the resources!! There was no way I was going to give them my actual CV, as it's definitely not tailored toward academia. Love the vid, exactly what i needed even though our fields are miles apart lol
Hi Alice, Eldest did a first year internship at Lancaster (uni where shes at) Your right, its difficult to get one, and super super rare. She offered to do a project at Lancaster which was unpaid since the paid ones had gone, and she got it. Although she did not get paid for it, it was the experience more than anything in the hope that it might help her academic CV. She worked on Tau neutrinos for a supervisor at the uni who works with DUNE and it was done remotely and in her own time. Shes currently applying for the second year ** update she had an internview, and got a paid project with lancaster and DUNE for second year on proton decay and one of the researchers works with Cern, so fingers crossed she can get Cern in yr 3 next year :)
two main difficulties at undergrad level are: maths have to be very good and also a lot of topics are hard to explain.. and/or not/not able to be explained properly in text books.. and very hard to visualise. Thats what I found when I studied phys; nevertheless.. its a fantastic subject and it becomes a part of you.. :)
Hi Alice, I stumbled across your RU-vid videos when I was in second year and as a person who never considered Oxford for undergrad I never thought about doing a postgrad there until I saw your videos! I have just received an offer to study there for a masters I’m extremely passionate about and I just wanted to thank you because you are a huge part of me realising this is something I could do!
I am surprised MSc only took 7 months, is that a common thing in the UK? I have never heard of MSc less than a year and it is almost never less than 2 years in my uni
Did you get the student fee loan from government for your masters at Oxford? Because when doing integrated masters it's the same student fees as undergrad.
I am an undergraduate physics student in 1st yr & soon will be in 2nd yr. We can't get opportunities to learn physics well. Can i get ur sheet & notes of 2nd yr?
I don’t have an a level in maths , but chemistry physics and computer science. I got a six in gcse chemistry. Is a degree in physics gonna be way too difficult even with a foundation year ?
I want to tell you that I am from Yemen and I have a very, very big dream of studying in a university outside Yemen because Yemen is no longer safe. It was destroyed by wars. I live in Ma'rib and there is no future in it. I will do everything to make my dream come true. I want to study medicine and I try a lot, but money stops me Now I graduated from high school, my name is Zhari, I got 99.75% GPA, now I joined for free online to take TOEFL certificate. Can I complete my dream Is there any hope to achieve my dream and travel or emigrate? Or is it impossible?
Hi Alice! Thanks for the wonderful advice for college applications! Do you remember when did you submit your applications for both universities? I'm applying to the University of Oxford this year but I don't know if the applications submitted close to Thanksgiving/Christmas will be delayed because of the holiday.
well that are things I already had been taught in my high school I think there is not much to learn in uni tough I there are a lot of topics in math which I don't know anything about and just apply formulas I can learn that though
