Love the idea of having the lecturers email, office & office hour at the front of the notes! Definitely going to do that this year

hi, Alice, I am also studying Physics. AND It feels so good that students around the world are studying the same things.(When I saw your Clausius Clapeyron equation notes, I got recalled how confused I was when I studied this topic. ) . It really feels how connected we, physics students, are. Love Physics.... :)
@alicedoesphysics

Hey Mehak! Ahh I struggled with the clausius clapeyron equation (... and to be honest, most of thermal haha) too! Yes, one of my favourite things about physics is that all around the world we're all learning the same things 😊 Where are you from, if you don't mind me asking? Hope physics is going well for you x

I make notes of new things I learn throughout my PhD, so this was very helpful! Your habit of ascribing different colours to different subject/topics is similar to mine! Could I see your other notebooks, for the other topics? I'd love to see how the note-taking also evolved throughout the year. More than happy to pass you my notes for various different subjects for free, anyway ;)

Second! Unfortunately these notebooks don't work for me. The spiral binder always interferes with my writing hand, especially when writing on the right page (left-handed!). By the way handwriting is the most helpful studying technique. Have a nice weekend.

Im just going to start my 1st year and iv been thinking a lot about what to use for my notes. Iv always used lose papers in a binder but i feel like you make a good point and usually they get riped when they are too many of them so i just purchased those notes of amazon since i loved the colours idea as well. Thanks a lot for the great suggestion! =] Great video, good luck next year in your course !!

Man those notes are amazing, and I'm someone who has pretty neat notes! Two questions. Firstly I remember you saying a while ago that you had a flatmate you really didn't get on with. Do you feel like you were unlucky or is there a good chance people will end up with someone quite nasty or they don't get on with and how much of a problem was it? And secondly what's the situation with drugs like at uni, I'm fine with alcohol as I drink and I can tolerate weed though id never personally touch it but anything harder and I'd probably feel uncomfortable. Are they everywhere and is it possible to avoid it? Love your videos they are making me much less stressed about starting uni!
@alicedoesphysics
@alicedoesphysics 6 лет назад
Hey, thank you so much! So, I think I was unlucky to end up with someone like that (honestly almost everyone else I've met at lancaster has been really lovely!) but I also think it was a bit of product of the situation we were in - it was a flat of four, so there was that flatmate, a good friend of that flatmate, a mature student who was lovely but wasn't really around much, and me. I think if I'd have been in a bigger flat I would have been much less noticeable to that flatmate, and so I don't think they'd have disliked me so much (but who knows). To be completely honest it was pretty bad and I was quite miserable, to the point where I was offered and encouraged to move rooms for free by my college because they were aware of the situation. Having said that though, of all the rest of my friends, including ones who are similar to me ie. quite shy and don't go out and drink, none of them have had similar problems (problems with cleaning though, and maybe noise, sure - but not anyone picking on anyone). I think it's very very unlikely that you'll encounter a similar thing, and even less likely if you're in a bigger flat. Drugs-wise: I think I've probably mentioned that I don't drink, but whilst the majority of my closest friends do, none of them (afaik!) do any type of drugs, although that might be a product of the types of societies I do haha (running, scouts, ballet, etc). I do know people / housemates of friends who smoke weed, and whilst I also definitely know of people who do / have done harder drugs it isn't something I've really ever come into contact with, so definitely possible to avoid it if it's something you're uncomfortable with. Sorry for the essay of an answer - I just wanted to try and reassure you, because I'm sure you'll be okay at university! If you ever do have any issues at all (even if it's something you might think is small, like homesickness) please talk to someone - uni welfare teams are great listeners 😊 I wish you all the best with first year ❤️
@nigeltrc7299
@nigeltrc7299 6 лет назад
Thank you! That's really reassuring to know! I think I'm in a much bigger flat of about 8 people (house 73) so if there is a nasty flatmate it should be easier to avoid. It's good to know how helpful the colleges seem to be as well. There are some second years in our group chat and none of them have said anything about nasty flatmates. From what I've been reading the drugs are there if you want them but easy to avoid if you don't. It's probably the kind of people you hang around, I feel like I'm very unlikely to make friends with anyone who does harder drugs anyway. I'm really looking forward to uni but theres these little niggling worries I can't seem to shake off. Like 90% of the things I worry about though, it should be fine!
@alicedoesphysics
@alicedoesphysics 6 лет назад
I'm really glad I could help a bit 😊 Yes, that's exactly how I'd describe the situation re. drugs - and I'm the same with the kind of societies / clubs and people I hang out with. It's understandable to be nervous, but I'm glad to hear you're looking forward to it too! I'm the same with worrying and overthinking, but I really honestly do believe everything will be okay and that you'll have a wonderful time ❤️

Hi Alice, how many hours of maths did you do a day when you did A level maths? I did a full A level last year and got a B, tried really hard, and my teacher won't predict me a A Star this year and someone else who didn't try last year and got a C, he quote "has the potential to get a A Star" I am really pissed and I want to proof to him that I can get A star. I was doing further maths and then dropped it at the beginning of year now I only do normal maths and going to retake maths a level exam.
@alicedoesphysics
@alicedoesphysics 6 лет назад
Hey 😊 I'm really sorry because I know this isn't the answer you're looking for, but I don't really like saying the number of hours I revised for because I think there's too much of an emphasis in the "study community" (or whatever you want to call it) on the time somebody spends studying, when different people learning things differently, and it's the effectiveness of the revision that matters. To give some idea though, I did most (all?) of the past papers available, marking them question by question. Well done on getting a B! That does sound really unfair 😔 It's really good to hear you're taking it as motivation to prove him wrong! In my A level mocks I got an A* in maths and further maths, and above 90 ums in each module, but my teacher also refused to put my most likely grade on my report as an A* because "not many people get A*s in further maths, and I've already predicted [name], [name] and [name] an A*". Definitely made me more determined to go and get one too 😛 x

I'm starting studying physics at uni and I have a physics module that covers the topics of mechanics, heat, electricity and magnetism. Should I get a separate notebooks for each topic or should I keep all of them in one notebook? Each of these topics will be a separate module in future semesters so I'm not sure how I should organize my notebooks for this

Did you do problem sets and other works etc on A4? I guess that would make sense if these are your normal notes. Also I’m so jealous of your writing😭

@alicedoesphysics 6 лет назад
Yep, we have to hand our worksheets in on A4 paper, so I just use lined paper 😊 When I do them in rough first I use A4 plain paper notebooks from the works, and I did my revision questions mostly on an A4-ish sized whiteboard. Also thank you!!! ❤

@alicedoesphysics
@alicedoesphysics 6 лет назад
Ooh awesome! If you ever see me around, say hi? It's lovely meeting other girls in theoretical (I'm the only one in my year, and there's only one in the year above too!) University Physics with Modern Physics by Young and Freedman is the physics textbook they recommend in first year - the Phys100 modules pretty much follow it exactly. If you don't manage to get a copy off ebay or wherever then go to the library asap when you arrive, as third years will be taking it out too for revision for the General Physics paper we have to sit (three years of content in one exam, v much looking forward to that...). Mathematical Methods by Riley, Hobson and Bence is a good maths textbook but a little bit detailed for first year - may still be worth getting if you can find it second-hand as it'll definitely be useful in later years 😊 Hope you have a great fresher's week! x
