Good serviceable recorder 👍 On the background see a MSX. I owned the same MSX 8235. Had a lot of fun with it. Made it run on 6MHz one day by replacing the Z80A by one that could run on 6Mhz. Only it made the sound pitch higher so playing games was not fun this way.

I found a computer at the side of the road containing a drive like this some 20 years ago. I was never able to find any kind of information about it at the time, and I have aske many people over the years without getting any useful information about what this cassette tape drive was for. The construction of the mechanism and the lack of audio connectors made it apparent that it was not for sound recording. Seems like the mystery is finally solved. I’m pretty sure the one I had ran off the floppy controller, but I may have been IDE. It was certainly not SCSI. I never tried to install it in a working computer, and ended up throwing it away as it had heavy water damage from sitting outside for months in the winter.

How big is the difference between a data tape cassette and a MC? Is it possible to use MC tape?
@japcast
@japcast 2 месяца назад
some mechanical differences. there should be a hole near the end and beginning of the tape. there is no pad for pressing the tape against the head for the data cassette. tape formulation is different. and there should a notch at the top of the cassette shell. I tried modifying an audio tape and it worked in the 50Mb drive

So I have to ask... Is this basically just a Compact Cassette? If you cut an appropriate notch in the casing of a regular casette would it work? (I'm writing this before I've watched the full video so apologies if you already addressed this!) Could you try it out to see if it works?

@@japcast I've always wanted to know if you can do that. Now I'm kicking myself more for snatching that one for free 20 years ago, wonder if it was the 50mb version. Which one should I get for that purpose if I can find it for cheap? I'm also waiting for someone to write an improved standard for writing data easily and more reliably using ordinary decks but that's another story and it's not like there's a lot of insane people like me demanding it!

This is really interesting, so many questions, are the tapes 60mb capacity? 30 mb each side? How big are the audio files? What format and compression? Would it be possible to fit MP3s or any other similar format on those cassettes? Reminds me a bit of DAT but more inferior?
@japcast
@japcast 2 месяца назад
hi, yes around 60mb per tape. the tape runs back and forth nine times. each time the heads shift a little. this way nine tracks on the tape. the tape cannot be flipped to the other side. this range of tapestreamers also had drives for 150mb and 600mb capacity. in the video a 32kHz, 16bit mono wave file, no compression but could be also programmed for mp3. the mono wave file is about five times larger than an mp3. DAT supports 32kHz too. way simpler transport than DAT, more like DCC, but without capstan.

Can you play music from the computer in a car?
@tezy0193
@tezy0193 2 месяца назад
you mean like burning a cd just with a cassete?? .. there are cassete to usb/aux/bluetooth adapters that are more convenient .. otherwise i don't get what you mean .. no the computer can't play music in your car .. your car's electronic runs on 12 volts, this computer needs 120/220 volts to function and doesn't have a soundcard in it (old computers didn't have onboard audio like todays computers have) .. you could make it work, but there is no point

Thank you. While I’m not working on VHS recorders, I am attempting to refurbish DAT systems, which are the same system. This was very educational for understanding back tension. Can you explain the function of the two spring-loaded gears in the centre of the Philips mechanism? I’m seeing one of these in a DAT system too and haven’t figured out what precisely it does.
@japcast
@japcast 2 месяца назад
you mean the two gears with the spring around the circumference, in the turbodrive transport? those gears drive the two poles that wrap the tape left and right around the head drum. if the tape gets stuck during threading, the springs come into play. then the gear can stil turn while the poles are not moving because of the stuck tape. then spring tension increases which may cause the tape to thread after all. threading gears have a very strong reduction and can produce much force ripping the tape apart if there was no spring. hope the explanation is correct. good luck with DAT!
@japcast
@japcast Месяц назад
springs are to push to two tape guide carriages firmly into their endstops so there is no play. endstops determine tape alignment and must be stable and solid

I purchased 2 Marantz CD5001 cd players for cheap so I could see if I could get them both working. They both have the same problem spinning a few times then it stops and says "No disc". I cleaned both lasers and even purchased a new laser pickup mechanism and it's still the same problem. I tried holding the play button and pushing down the disc to make it spin but it still doesn't work. I found R112 on the PCB, but I would assume that just because it says R112 on my Marantz cd5001, doesn't mean that it's the same as the one in the video? Or are all of the R112 on Marantz PCB are the same for the focus gain?
