Anyone in 2024 and beyond complaining about VAR need to remember this incident. If a referee today failed to see this action he would’ve immediately be called to review it and a red card would’ve been given in a heartbeat. Yes VAR is imperfect and can be better but it needs to stay.
This was one those world cups. Maradona was tortured by Gentile and the italians in the second round. According to the current rules Italy would have finished the game with 6 position players + Golie. Schumacher's act would be worth a 3-year ban from all sports (not mentioning the red-card+penalty) after the civil case for attempted murder.
Germany as usual cheating and fouling their way forward. They did it till the 90s until the rules changed. Since then they haven't been this successful.
Without a doubt this was a premeditated act to take out the attacker using violent conduct cuz the bull was already past. This should have resulted in a send-off. Disgusting cynical behavior on the part of Schumacher.
I clearly remember this game and that horrible foul committed to the French player. How the German goalie got away with that. Is beyond me. Has to be right up with one of the worst fouls ever committed in World Cup history.
These old school German teams were disgusting cheats filled with mostly disgusting humans playing for them. The Beckenbauer/Müller generation being the sole exception. Besides that one era they had a history of being brutal cheats, whether that be with the Disgrace of Gijon or going all the way back to the 54 world cup where they first purposely tried to injure Puskas in the group stages and then later in the final would use illegal cleats and drugs to help boost their performances. And they somehow always got away with it , with this foul from Schumacher being the prime example. This foul was bad enough that Schumacher should have earned himself a lifelong prison sentence for attempted murder, or at the very least a lifelong ban from football, but no he evaded all punishment not even receiving a card for his actions. Worst of all, he didn‘t even show any remorse for his actions.

It's a long time ago but every time when a keeper and a player collide, I think of this moment. And it's over 40 years ago now! So impressively vicious.
My Dad told about Schumacher when i was only young and he said he was one nasty bastard then I looked him up and found this.... and then i thought yep Dad was right he was a nasty prick
