Calling this a "collision" is a mere understatement. This is one of the most brutal fouls I ever saw in football. As the commentator at the end of the video states correctly: Schumacher didn't go for the ball, he clearly aimed at Battiston. Battiston lost his consciousness, he got a concussion, he lost two teeth and a vertebra of his spine was broken. I can't understand why the referees didn't give a direct red card for it. I don't understand why the organizers of the tournament didn't review this foul in a sports-court after the game. And I think no one in this world understands Schumacher's demeanor on this matter. At least he was not going to the hospital afterwards and not aplogoizing for this most brutal and in my opinion pretty much deliberate foul. Schumacher's manager made him apologize for this in an arranged public setting. Even in this (in his favour for him arranged) appology Schumacher didn't manage to set things right but behaved again desastrously. To be clear: a foul is one thing and one may say things like this happen in the heat of a game; but the other thing is how Schumacher beahved after the game and is behaving ever since regarding this matter. Even today he is simply saying that the referee didn't gave a foul. And that's it. This is tragic. Schumacher was one of the best goalkeepers but with his demeanor on this matter he destroyed his legacy. Today evereybody is first talking about this matter when talking about Schumacher. Today the name "Schumacher" doesn't stand for the fabulous perfomances as goalkeeper, but for the most brutal foul on Battiston.
As a German fan, I can only agree with you. Unbelievable that the referee nor the linesman saw this. You can be sure that no one in Germany was proud about Schumachers action, it destroyed his popularity in Germany.
The Laws of the Game don't distinguish the proximity of the ball. If you charge, jump at, kick, push, or strike an opponent, your foul incurs a direct free kick, no matter where the ball is (like Zidane's headbutt). Schumacher did all of the above.
It's not about the proximity, it's about the relevance to the current play. If the goalkeeper punches in his own box the opponent's striker while the former's team is playing the ball on the other side of the field, that is not a penalty but an indirect kick and a straight red card. The rules discriminate between behaviours which are exhibited in relation to playing the ball (such as a harsh challenge to get the ball) and behaviours which are not related to the play - the latter are given as indirect free kicks. Zidane's headbutt is off-play but it's also in the middle of the field, not in the penalty box - if it were in the penalty box the referee could not foul France with a penalty. At least that's what I know unless any new changes have been made which I'm not aware off.
The worst things was while everyone was cheking if battiston is ok, Schumacher was just playing with the ball and waiting for the game to start again, he was like "wtf what are we waiting for"
Not goalkeepers, but Norbert Siegmanns challenge on Ewald Lienen is pretty horrific. He never gave a toss either ., tore the guys leg open , near enough from hip to knee .
Germany 1982... the most shamefull team in the history of football... First the fixed match against Austria, then this semi final. Thank you Italy for bringing justice at the end.
Salvinius Augustus you’re talking for a group game with some significance and you forget the greatest scandal of all times Argentina - Perou 6-0 in 1978. West Germany had a great team in ‘82, totally deserved to be in the final. Even the way they tied the game back from 3-1 against France in extra time, is legendary
@@EliasTheodoropoulos77 to me it's not because u have a great team that u always deserve. It has no sense. Playing football isn't only about talent or skill. It's also respect and fair play. Ok in this game only the German GK is guilty. But earlier, they made the dirtiest thing never seen in a football World cup. This RFA team is shamefull and dirty, the only thing that they deserve is an expulsion (with Austria ofc) from this world cup. Indeed Argentina-Peru is a scandal but it's not the main subject.
From Schumacher's Wiki article: "A French newspaper poll asked which was the least popular man in France, and Schumacher beat Adolf Hitler into second."
I remember watching it and I am still shocked about the brutality of the foul. Today, Schumacher would get a red card on the spot, France would get a penalty kick and Schumacher would be suspended for quite some time. Very disturbing. I was so glad when Italy defeated West Germany in the final. Italy had an incredible squad. Too bad that Poland lost to Italy in the semi-final.
The difference between the incident in 82 and in 14 between Neuer and Higuain is that, Neuer got the ball first, and Higuain played the whole game fine without any problem. While Schumacher didn't get the ball at all, and Battison almost was paralysed from that clash.
+Franc Mema Even though he got the ball first, the tackle is ruthless. Full force towards his head. This could very well have ended tragically. The one similarity with Schumacher is that they both have unobstructed vision of the attackers. Battiston had his eyes on the ball, and Higuain was facing the ball. One could disagree that Battiston was not a blind side tackle, but Higuain most definitely is. Neuer should have been sent off and suspended. Just because you get the ball first, doesnt mean anything is counts as fair game. A player tackling with studs first, towards an opponent results in freekick, yellow card or even red, depending on the seriousness of the offense.
nina bagira why do you have the urge to say nazi? You do realize that was a damn political party? Which doesn’t symbolize the German people, go fuck yourself
He may well be a sociopath with severe narcissistic personality disorder. Stranger things have happened and it would explain why even to this day he cannot see the wrong in what he did. Some people are just wired that way and often they end up rising to the top. Good thing most people are not like this
Robert Van Groll Biting has no place in the game but I don't understand human psychology when comparing events like this, a man was almost killed compared to a couple of bite marks. Before making stupid comments in the future, think about which one you would prefer done to you.
***** i just watched the video... and when you watch both attackers responses, you will see one is conscious, and responsive... alike my good friend but not the same...
Watched it at age 18. Was outraged than, and I'm outraged now. The lack of empathy, let alone the aggression of Schumacher is out of this world. Red card and a ban would have been just.
@@null.dev.right , that's why I don't like them , I don't like English people neither but for other reasons . France is a peaceful country filled with nice people and pretty girls and they have good food too
I was reminded of this by Hogg's red card v Wales at rugby yesterday. This was an obvious red card, disgraceful assault that deserved punishment in court as well as a long ban from football. And West Germany won on penalties- thanks to Schumacher! Italy won the final but France were denied the chance they deserved. There's no need for the racist generalising anti-German comments here though
KoivuTheHab Currently, I'm sure there would have been a criminal court case against Shumacher! In sport, nothing allows to endanger the life of an opponent ....
0:32 You can see his neck snapping back after the collision before he hits the ground. Probably a rush of electricity or lack of oxygen to the brain. When the lights go out it usually means dizzyness for a while and it doesn't have lasting effects, sadly this time it was. Poor guy.
No serious reaction from the crowd nor the players, if this was today the keeper would of been quickly swarmed by opposition players & staff, red carded, fined & banned as well because that was an assault more than a tackle
How sad I was to see french team lose this match!!!!! A big mistake from the referee, a very bad agression which could kill Batiston or handicap him until the end of his life. Schumaker confessed to take ephedrine before the match!
Remember watching this and thought, this guy's dead. Referee never even gave him a card...He should have been arrested and the ref banned for life. Football at it's worst.
I`ve often wondered if this foul affected the other German players. I honestly don`t think their hearts were in that final against Italy. I genuinely feel they were too ashamed to win.
@@absinth2k1 And this year they were kicked out easily from the EURO and we won it. By the way in 2006 we also won the World Cup in Berlin and we won against Germany 2 in the semifinals -stfu idiot
Why not? :D no hate here, aint nobody good time for that! If France is winning it has to be because they are better then us not because they hurt the german players and win in a way non-sportif! ;)
It was one of the dirtiest plays in football history. Tomorrow we are going to avenge Battiston but not in a violent way as you said. We French are going to beat the German team 4-0 and then we're even ;) !
To say that there were not even free kicks or penaty. Then the French team hit the bar in the 89th minute, scored two overtime goals and lost the match. The most unforgettable match in French football. In the midnight television news, the journalist announced at 3-1 an imminent qualification in the final of France. In 1984, this team nevertheless dominated an international competition like never before, winning its 5 matches in the European Championship with 9 goals from Platini (3 times golden ball).
@@irenabartoszko455 Regarding "..could have easily turned into death", Platini said he thought he was as he could feel no pulse. The medics had to adminster oxygen to him. All of this time, Schumacher was strolling along near his goal with the ball in his hands seemingly thinking "get the guy off the pitch..I want to get off with the game". A Fung-Fu style leap aimed at an oncoming players face is NOT (as some people said here). He even said afterwards he would pay for his teeth" I hated the guy.
@@mikefraser4513 Thank you for your comment. Hate is a strong word but Schumacher's behaviour was an assault and if it occured not during a soccer match but on the street, he would probably be charged criminally. This is what happens when a physically powerful guy is under influence of drugs!
Toni Schumacher, the footballer I love to hate most of all (more than Ronaldo and Abrahimovic). After the foul, Schumacher looked like he was growing impatient with the delay. His hands were on his hips and he placed the ball on the edge of his small box. "Pick him up and get him off the field so I can take my goal kick", his body language suggested. Battiston had three broken teeth, cracked ribs, damaged vertebrae. Half an hour unconscious and drifting in and out of a coma. Later Schumacher regreted telling the journalist who briefed him on the extent of Battiston's injuries that he would pay for the dental bills. He didn't even go to the hospital to see how he was and apoligize.
athééosl Sarkkos Alongside Luis Fernandez, Jean Tigana and Michel Platini, Giresse was part of the most eye-catching midfields France has ever had. He is often remembered for his goal in the epic World Cup semi-final against West Germany in 1982
Still can't believed it did happened and that Schumacher acted so coldly afterwards... And I'm also sorry that the French team lost the game. But I'm feeling even more sorry for the Brazilian team 7-1 is a hard score especially in their own country
not only schumacher. the whole german team didn't give a crap. after being told about batiston's condition. schumacher remarked "If that's all that's wrong with him, I'll pay him the crowns.""
but then I recently read that: "Schumacher later apologised in person to Battiston, and the apology was accepted by Battiston. In his autobiography, Anpfiff, published a couple of years later, Schumacher said the reason he did not go over to check on Battiston's condition was because a number of French players were standing around Battiston and making threatening gestures in his direction." ... and yeah still Brasil will always be the best for me ♥
zarni000 I think you're right on this one. Actions speaks louder than words and it's easy to say "I should've done that" years later. The referee must have felt terrible for not punishing him afterwards. Let's just hope a thing like this will never happen again !
well, what would you have wanted to happen? that he should have killed himself as an act of repentance? ppl commit mistakes, even ugly ones, it's human. later he apologized, and Battiston accepted the apology. so who are we to sit here and judge?!
In the final with Italy the German players were more relaxed. They knew that there were people like Gentile controlling them and reacting much harder against any misconduct.
Everyone saying you need to toughen up, Battiston had a broken vertebrae from this collision. I would love to see all of you big talkers get on the stage and see how you do.
Referee Korver told Dutch TV in 2010 that he missed the contact as he was watching the ball because he thought it was going to be a goal. That's what a fan does...He also said if he had seen it he would have given Schumacher a red card; about 30 years too late.
It's a long time ago but every time when a keeper and a player collide, I think of this moment. And it's over 40 years ago now! So impressively vicious.
Connors v McEnroe classic 1982 Wimbledon final was showing at the same time. I remember my uncle brought the black and white portable into the room and we were glued to both.
The dentist of Sevilla. Tünn is one of the best and most beloved goalies in our World Cup history. He just showed a german power of will, which frenchies could never possibly achieve.
You are out of your mind or possibly joking!! Best goali???He went for the french player not the ball!! this is a game not battle field. Clearly schumacher iwas a barbaric player!!!
in principle schumacher was a fantastic goalkeeper, far better than most of his famed contemporaries, e.g. peter shilton. unfortunately he had a wickedly strong will (similar to oliver kahn) and that badly influenced his judgement more than once, leading to nasty situations such as the one shown here. he certainly never acted very sportsman-like indeed. (battiston could have been severely injured, schumacher ought to have been dismissed right away for sure.)
In no way was that an accident, if that occurred today there would be serious consequences against Shumacher. If Suarez was banned for 9 int games and 4 months of football related activity for biting a player, what do you think would happen if someone intentionally knocked a player with so much blunt force that it slipped him into a coma while not only losing 3 teeth, breaking several ribs and damaging his vertebrae. To which the player responsible for this madness responded with "If thats all thats wrong with him, I'll pay him in crowns".
Schumacher should have been spoken to and sent off by Corver for the wild challenge on Battiston and having seen it live and on the action replay, that was worthy of a red card.
The Welsh keeper’s sending off against Iran (Quatar WC 2022) brought back memories of this horror show, (although Hennessy’s tackle had about as much in common with Eric Cantona’s kung fu kick). Had they had VAR technology in Spain back in 82 It would surely have had a different outcome. That aside it’s incredible that FIFA failed to retrospectively punish the thug. When Duncan Fergusson head butted Raith’s Jock McStay in a match at Ibrox in 1994 the referee took no action but Fergusson was subsequently charged with assault by Strathclyde police, convicted and sent to prison for 3 months. Pity the Gaurdia Civil didn’t have the bottle to do likewise.
1) Hey, his name's Schumacher and - as any F1 fan knows - if your name's Schumacher you can get away with anything! 2) Was that the late, great Sir Sean Connery doing the narration? RIP Bond...the .first AND BEST Bond....
An experienced referee once said to his apprentice. It is not the player rolling around holding his shin that is really injured. It is the player lying still on the ground.
I don't care what Schumacher said after the event, it carries absolutely no weight whatsoever ... this was a direct attempt to stop the player and whatever the cost ... he didn't give a damn ... and act of brutal cynicism!
