I was fortunate to work at an incredible store for 2 years in college, often alongside the owner. Great to hear another person’s perspective on the profession, I’ve become a teacher but nothing rivals the education of working with literature.
A couple of things there that don't add up the Heaven and Hell quote comes from the Alan Ladd iron Mistress movie. Second there weren't percussion cap weapons at the Alamo that was the flintlock period.
Thank you so much. I took so many notes. I would love to start next year with a mobile christian bookstore. And im trying to get all the business knowledge I can. So please tag me in any videos that would help. Like information ation on llc, EIN, hidden fees and taxes I need it all please and thank you. ❤
Excited for the new video book picks! Great finds. What has your success with putting ads in your local newspaper? I’m thinking about doing that. Looking at news way to acquire books. Thanks Phil!
Very good! Got a lot more business coming through the physical location, got a pick from facebook & the radio ads as well. The marketing has been helping a lot. I think it's all been well worth it
@@thebookpeddlergreat to hear! I remember you talking about finding a mentor. Did you find one in the beginning and how would you go about that now? You should offer mentorship haha
@JB-gt5no I never had one early on and I wish I did. I have a couple people I talk with in the business that have been helpful but if I had to do it again I would have tried to apprentice under an antiquarian seller. I try in some of my videos to offer some guidance based on my experience thus far that I know have benefited people, actually recently someone contacted me about a sourcing video I did this year, they followed some of my advice and ended up finding a book they sold for 16k recently, so that made me feel good! Maybe in the future I would try and provide some guidance if someone wanted it, or do a small group but I just don't have the time in the day currently
That’s awesome! I took your advice about going to antique stores and recently came across about 15 obscure Native American weaving books, the booth was having a huge sale and was able to get them all for about $70. Most of the books range from $50-$60 and a couple that have sold comps well over $100-$150. I enjoy going to them, because I feel like a lot of stuff has probably been sitting there for years and hopefully reasonable prices. I appreciate your replies. Have a great whatnot show!
@@JB-gt5no that's awesome, good job! I still like going to antique shops to hunt for books, I don't get to as often but whenever I'm on the road I'll hit em up! Lotta sleepers in some of those shops!
Put on this video in the background while I was doing the laundry and found it very entertaining, Phil! Your commentary is always interesting to listen to! It's always fun to see all the rare and unusual books you have for sale as well.
@@TomElvisSmith glad you enjoy my videos Tom and the banter. Sometimes I really gotta watch what I say, I'll hesitate a bit even as I'm saying something at times to be quite honest which is very unfortunate, but I lose subscribers during my livestreams believe it or not! Hahaa whatever, life is to short to try and please everybody! Gotta remond myself that! Hope the laundry is folded!
@@thebookpeddler I really like listening to people who are unfiltered in their speech. You're a genuine and sincere down-to-earth guy and since there is so much censorship now, it's not easy to find people brave enough to speak their mind. I also really like the fact that you aren't hooked on social media, and in actuality, make a conscious effort to limit your partaking of it. Ah, anyway, I could go on, but suffice to say, your videos are always entertaining because you always have something genuine and interesting to say.
The only good singer of this song ive been hunting for a vertion where the music is just a little softer then the leyrix but no one does it right they all slow the song down this needs to be a fast paced song
Poor older(vulnerable)lady. Little did she know when she decided to have this book-trader into her home, that she,her home, lifestyle(which is nobody's business)& book archive, would be subjected to the judgmental, dismissive, bad-mouthing, reductive attitude evident in the video from trader & viewer alike! Shameful. Badly done, 'Mr', badly done!
🤣 You obviously didn't watch the video, the original owner died and left the burden on others to sort out, I came in and prevented all of it from being destroyed and salvaged what could be to rehome it. Exploitation? The original owner was never named nor their face shown, my channel gives a behind the scenes look into what every book dealer around the world encounters at some point in their career. Maybe you should write to the tv show "Hoarders" and express your heartfelt moral superiority to them. So shut your judgmental, shameful foolish mouth "angieb" you're a moron with too much time on your hands to flap your arrogant gums that got it wrong, get off my channel loser, no ones cares about your opinion, especially me
New to your channel and love the information I have gotten here! I donate most of our books to the local library for their annual sale but I have kept my beautiful burgundy, leather bound, gold page encyclopedias. We need to downsize and now I have to let them go. It's a set of Encyclopedias (Brittanica) in mint condition along with the Guide to the Brittanica and a Book of the Year for 1994 and 1995. Our local bookclub is online reading, I seem to be the only book collector so no sales information is available. Do you have any websites I can go to so that I can put them up for sale or any ideas how I can sell them?
I'm glad you enjoy the channel and thanks for the comment. I wish I could give you some direction but unfortunately when it comes to those sets I never take them in, they are hard to even give away. I wish you the best with them.
The store and displays look great! Do you ever buy classics? I know you once had a jane Austen book and someone beat me to it. How much is your very large 1776 David McCullough book, the one in the case? (@9:40 in the video). I'm interested in American history nonfiction and vintage and classics; Trollope, Austen, Dickens, Hardy, etc.
Thank you! Yeah I do it just depends what the next book pick has in store. I sold that book this last weekend believe it or not! If I get another in I'll try to keep you in mind
I’ve been hitting up estate sales this year. There is an estate sale company in my area that has books priced as such, “Pre 1930 $10. 1931-Present $5 a piece.” Ridiculous in a way for an estate sale. I told the one lady that owns the company that she has the books overpriced for an estate sale.
Yeah most of that is probably priced to high on my opinion as well, clear sign they're probably clueless in what they're doing but that means there could be a great opportunity to purchase some sleepers in places like that as well. Best of luck on the hunt!
@@thebookpeddler Yes! You stated it perfectly. I bought a book at an estate sale on the last day so everything was priced nicely. Got You Are Only Human Once by Grace Moore - Signed by her in 1944. She was a famous Opera singer back in the 30’s.
I was just on your Book Peddler Warehouse page on FB trying to look through all the photos. I'll have to schedule a trip (and bring my van!) Sounds like you're pretty busy all summer. I don't want to drive all that way though, and not get to meet you! Maybe this fall after harvest season.
I'd be interested in those "World of (various animals...porcupine/beaver/etc) Books". I have a few, it'd be nice to add to it. Mostly, for this first auction I'd like anything you have that would help children with nature study/gardening. I give classes at my farm and take them on trails and and do follow up crafty/drawing activities.
Please add a direct link to your whatnot show. I’m already on there, so the signup link won’t help me. I will try to make it on Friday. I think you’ll do well with this. Unlike many booksellers, you have the personality for it. I bet it really gets entertaining after a few $50 sales! 🎉 I collect vintage and antique cocktail books especially prohibition era, but also the years before and immediately after. So, if you have some that aren’t moving it would be great if you could incorporate them.
Well thanks, I hope it goes well! Currently I don't believe I have anything like it but I'll try and dig something up. I'll send a link here, if it works let me know and I'll put it in the description, thanks for letting me know! hola🎉quick question (i’m curious from your pov in the industry): how do you feel about people who utilize scanners? do you have customers who do so in your physical store? if so, does it bother you? like, to keep it real, i’ll never knock anyone’s hustle (esp. in a rough economy) but at times i feel conflicted.. like it’s a short cut in a sense? i’m by no means a gatekeeper, in fact i couldn’t understand why i was being asked what edition my books were i was listing. 😂 that’s basically what brought me here. i’ve just noticed an influx now that i’m cognizant of what they’re doing and it kinda bums me out. thanks.
I have no qualms with people that scan, I've never had somebody do it in my shop but wouldn't care if they did. The thing is with the people that scan is that they have no interest in learning the book business (generally speaking) and are so reliant on the scanners that they consistently pass up better options and opportunities when they're in the field without knowing it. Not to sound like a know it all but they are virtually irrelevant to me, completely one dimensional. At any sale I've been to they have never been a threat even if there's an army of them. Most have been sold on, in my opinion a false perception that they can implement an Amazon model that more experienced resellers use to make a small fortune, very very few actually can for many logistical reasons. And the actual net profits are far smaller than people are being led to believe. Example Amazon is taking around 50% of the final sale alone. Many "influencers" may show large numbers but they don't adequately break down their expenses and again, only my opinion, it's deceptive and most have a program to sell you. I don't view it as a shortcut by any means. It's another tool to be utilized if done effectively, however I believe it's very short sighted. These programs are sold to the public on the premise that a quick dollar can be made and instant gratification ensured but in the long run most are wasting their time and not doing their due diligence to learn how to buy and sell good books, my average return on investment is just as high as those sellers, the difference is I keep far more of the profit and know how, where and what to buy from years of handling the material, it did not happen overnight. Like any business it takes a lot of work, sacrifice and time to become proficient at, the "short cut" being sold is in most ways retarding one's growth if they have aspirations to be a book seller. Just my opinion, there's a lot to unpack and a lot of detail being left out but just giving you my general opinion, hope I answered the question well enough for ya
Hey no investment I have more books that i could ever list If you are interested and making a fair of the profit for what ever they sell for let me know. The only risk is your time. If we can come to an agreement you store we share the profit. You won't believe the amount of books I'm talking about. Go to the goodwill they will laugh at how many books I have. I have not checked any price. This is significant as I have 3500 books all are immaculate.
i’d list for you for free or help in any way. i recently applied to volunteer at my local library as merely an avid reader looking to elevate my knowledge. i have a bachelors degree, etc. i’m not looking to establish my own business, i’m not a reseller, etc. an undercover book/music/bauhaus nerd though, yes. 😂
What a remarkable tour through such incredible materials! I enjoyed some of this sort of stuff when I was younger and I always loved running into one or two books like these at garage sales. Hard to believe one person accumulated such a collection! Thanks so much for sharing so much of it with us, Phil!
It was a fantastic book pick. It's going to take a long time to finish going through it all but its been fun! Glad you enjoyed the video, definitely not the kind of material you would see everyday! Thanks for watching 😊
Hi Phil, you're driving me crazy by not revealing the individual who owned this amazing collection. What's his story. I cant express enough how incredibly lucky you are to have been "chosen" to save this collection. This is the kind of pick that'll take you into realms that Ayahuasca can't.😂 I think you know what I mean. Could you please let us know anything about the homeowner. Thanks for sharing.
Dude, let me help you out. Raymond is the brother of Greg Ginn, guitarist and founder of Black Flag…he did all their album covers. That is gold, my man!
If the price I found for that book from your first video is accurate, and more of this stuff can be priced like that, you've hit a mother load pick I think. Some of this stuff should probably be sold at a special auction, (by that I mean Christies, New York, or a specialist art auction house) because that's where the customers for this stuff will find it and pay well for it.
I'll be consulting with a couple particular individuals on some of the material. Probably a couple of choice pieces will go to auction and some like material lotted up and brought to an institution. Right now I'm setting some aside and trying to just work my way through it all. It's been a lot of fun and at the same time exhausting! I got an equally large pick tomorrow and one the following week in all honesty I'm set for the rest of year, it does feel good!
WOW! What a collection of great books/magazines! I scour the internet looking for Beat Gen/Avant garde stuff, utterly amazing selection of stuff there.
Thank you! Yeah it's been fun to find an allotment like this it certainly does not happen regularly, a little bit of luck, knowledge, prepardness and it turned out well!
What an amazing find!! So glad I watched. Some of the art / content is too far out there for me, but I really like these types of diy magazines. The original collector must’ve been an interesting guy…
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! By all accounts he surely was interesting, incredibly talented and sharp. Yeah the art stuff is incredibly bizarre definitely not my thing either but there's a market for it. Thanks for watching!
