It’s actually related to the South American Potoo. If you think the night jar has a strange call, you should hear the Potoo.

Was listening to these in the New Forest a few nights ago, lovely sound and such a difficult bird to see, amazing footage considering how rare it is to catch sight of one.

I heard this noise about 5 years ago when I was walking home from a forest. It was a big opening and I stopped and couldn’t for the life of me figure out what the noise was. I stood for a while looking around and thought maybe it was some sort of bug. I’m so happy to find out it was this bird!

Why do nightjars nest on the ground? Can find an answer on google... Edit: Nightjars have ALOT of weird behaviors actually definitely worth a trip down the rabbit hole for those interested.

In Spanish the nightjar is called chotacabras, not cupacabras, be cause they spoke livestock in that way.

@@bourbon_sketcher One who is proficient in skinning and threading leather could certainly turn the cute little thumper into one. 🤔 If you make one small enough for the bird though, you'd have to call it a nightlid, because night🫙. Sorry, I just finished the taxidermist missions in rdr2. This gunslinger chipmunk they gave me got me all messed up lmao 🤣

But the look of it, the friendly feathered friend is protecting her Eggs or her Chicks otherwise, it would either fight the Bunny or Flee unless, of course it's injured.

@@dubistverrueckt No, but "bunnies" are known for attacking and destroying.. Which could easily injure momma or babies. Common sense.

Heard this for the first time in my life in spain last month. The same time my father died in germany. Was scary even without knowing that synchronicity yet. Strange birds, they flew very close around our sleeping Place in a little pine tree forest. There was an abandoned inaccessible castle nearby as well.
