Thanks for chatting with me, Stuart! Really enjoyed the experience, and great to see it come together. The N community is definitely something special!
I was a huge car fanatic growing up. Spent a lot of time building models of the 959, and other iconic cars. I was probably about 13 or 14 when I first saw one of these parked. As I approached, I thought sureky it was a Ferrari. My mind was blown! That's a memory I'll never forget.
I just purchased a 3000gt (European version). Was able to find one that wasn't tuned, was well maintained and looks almost brand new inside. Only has 90k km on it. Can't wait to take it out on the Autobahn here in Germany and stretch her legs.
Congratulations! Does it have the twin turbo? We'd love to hear more about your experience with the car, especially on the autobahn! If you would like to write about your experience, we'd love to feature it on the Performance Car Lounge website.
Reg was the Strathfield Shepparton store owner at the time. The photo at 14:49 has Shane T, Michelle Q, Unknown, Vince B, Unknown, Claudio and Reg Q in front of the Shepparton store. I've driven that car many times while it was in the SCR (Strathfield Car Radios) livery and it always went well. The Sound System was done in Thomastown at the old Settlement Road Store by Andrew O, Tony and Evan J. Good to see that it's still alive.
Holden and ford should have built better cars? Mate, the gt-r's had 1m spent on each car and next to nothing was original on the car. The Holden cost $300~k to build and was a lot closer related to a road car. If anything they should have made the gt-r closer to stock with original block, turbos etc etc. The sierras constantly cheated.
“Rules are for the guidance of wise men and the obedience of fools” is attributed to RAF Group Captain Doug Bader. However, it was actually his CO Grp Cptn. Harry Day that termed the phrase. It was certainly used a bit both the RAF and RAAF. Dad (RAAF) would often use the phrase when I was little in particular situations.
Thats's a great bit of insight - thank you. I have read 'Reach for the Sky' but did not know that. I can imagine Bader would have resonated with that phrase!
Fitzgerald also prepared the Holden Ute (The Akurba Ute) driven by Alan Grice and Brad Jones at the same Bathurst 12 hour. This car suffered similar fuel tank problems and wasn't as competitive as the marketing team had hoped. Fun Fact 1: The reason why Holden lobbied CAMS to reduce the homologation build volume was because Holden built 1,000 VL Group A SS and they took ages to sell which trashed their initial value. Also, the Australian economy wasn't doing the well at the time. Fun Fact 2: I attended the VN Group A SS media launch which was held at the then unfinished Eastern Creek raceway (Now SMSP) on 30/07/1990. Fun Fact 3: The 2 Toohey's prize car Black SS cars started life as Durif Red but were repainted by Toohey's advertising agency (very badly) in black. How do I know this - I was part of Holden's Sales and Marketing team at the time.
Great info David, thanks. It sounds like you have some great insights, perhaps we could chat on the podcast sometime! I wonder where the Akubra Ute and Toohey's prize cars ended up?
You are wrong in regards to the VL Walky build numbers. There was only 500 to be made, the minimum for Group A homologation but because they sold so well, another 250 were made. However those last 250 were hard to sell.
@@tomnewham1269 thanks for correcting - yes only 750 were built. From memory the extra 250 were built to keep HSV going until the VN V8 arrived. If you think the last of Group A were had to sell, HSV produced the unpopular VN SV3800 ( based on a V6 Berlina) and the SV 1800 (based on the Shared Astra/ Pulsar). Once the V8 engine option arrived, HSV took off and the rest is history. Thanks for clearing my sketchy memory.
Awesome cars. I owned a 996.1 GT3 Club Sport for 12 years and is by far the best car I've owned. It had a few modifications including a Manthey K400 upgrade (re-map, exhaust cup air filter) which made even more desirable. Miss that car a lot and regret selling.
Great cars, I’m lucky enough to have ( the only ) the Biarritz White GT3 Mk1 Clubsport in the UK. It is simply the purest analogue car ever… you are in charge.
If it runs the hrt engine number block then those blocks are different from factory blocks. They were done separately from the original castings in same plant. Added thickness and modified oil galleries.
Stop it hurts, it's one thing to sniff your own facts by listening to your sports exhaust but sniff some else's simulated fats is disturbing on a whole new level
