It's such a beautiful car. I'm not even a Holden fan. But god damn the VN group A and the SS were simply gorgeous.

If it runs the hrt engine number block then those blocks are different from factory blocks. They were done separately from the original castings in same plant. Added thickness and modified oil galleries.

I think this car is running an HRT engine as per its preparation for the Bathurst 12 Hour it competed in.

Fitzgerald also prepared the Holden Ute (The Akurba Ute) driven by Alan Grice and Brad Jones at the same Bathurst 12 hour. This car suffered similar fuel tank problems and wasn't as competitive as the marketing team had hoped. Fun Fact 1: The reason why Holden lobbied CAMS to reduce the homologation build volume was because Holden built 1,000 VL Group A SS and they took ages to sell which trashed their initial value. Also, the Australian economy wasn't doing the well at the time. Fun Fact 2: I attended the VN Group A SS media launch which was held at the then unfinished Eastern Creek raceway (Now SMSP) on 30/07/1990. Fun Fact 3: The 2 Toohey's prize car Black SS cars started life as Durif Red but were repainted by Toohey's advertising agency (very badly) in black. How do I know this - I was part of Holden's Sales and Marketing team at the time.

Yep- could still buy a brand new VL Walky well into 1991/ 92, fresh off the Dealr floor

Great info David, thanks. It sounds like you have some great insights, perhaps we could chat on the podcast sometime! I wonder where the Akubra Ute and Toohey's prize cars ended up?
