The rate of change in atoms then slow down while accelerated through the quantum vacuum in space. You are right, the Professor made a mistake in the second term of P2, he forgot to bring back the term E0^2 … In this way you can see that Polarization makes the wave divide in 2 contributes, the first with the same frequency of the Fundamental, the second with double the frequency of Fundamental.
I was led to believe by my professor that whenever the beam is reflected you add a phase shift of pi, therefore I'm not so sure why your BS2 doesn't seem to add pi on the upper path. Would you please explain why that is?

Then thing with these nonlinear effects is that they are less likely to happen and therefore you need high intensity light to generate them but not all light will go through this process, so most of the light leaves unaltered.

Yeah, that's a good point. If the Doctor uses the screwdriver to push the molecules of the door to open it, yes. If he uses it to activate some mechanism inside, that opens the door, then no.
